A magical Europe inspired land but not as heavy on the one to one comparison as some other fantasy novels can be. French-inspired so it has not being a typical medieval English fantasy going for it.
Interesting premise but the plot was predictable and not very compelling. I found the system of magic and magic users to be a unique take on how clerics would usually operate. The characters were fine, i didnt develop an attachment to them that made me root for them, nor was the villain someone I felt strongly about. They didnt have as much substance as his other novels but since this is a one-off and not a series, i didn't see this as a huge problem. It's very slightly more adult than his usual work, not sure how I feel about how it was done. I guess its meh. Ultimately, what kept me reading was wanting to know more of the mechanics of the world and the magic.
Overall an entertaining read although I think I'd rather read more about the lore of the world itself than to see this become a series.
I still love Garth Nix!
