I got a book and just started to read. The first story was “The picture of Dorian Gray” but there were 4 more stories in the book, though it was in my native language. Within a few days, I finished it as I was heavily grabbed by the story. It made a mark in me. I found Oscar Wilde's mastery of storytelling. So artistically expressed the beauty of art. I find Wilde worshipping the beauty of art in the disguise of Basil who is impressed by Dorian Gray.
This book is a remarkable one. If you are running after honey, go for it. ...more

A play, written by Oscar Wilde with his humorous and witty storytelling. It tells you about political corruption in an aristocratic society.
It starts with a dinner party at Sir Robert Chiltern’s house in the fashionable Grosvenor Square in London. Lady Markby arrives with an unexpected guest, the witty and ambitious Mrs Cheveley. She has returned from Vienna to blackmail Sir Robert, a promising Foreign Office politician. Sir Robert’s wealth, and therefore his career, was founded on a financial reward for selling a cabinet secret about the Suez Canal Company. Throughout the play, Sir Robert goes to great lengths to hide his secret from his wife. Mrs Chiltern puts her ‘ideal husband’ on a pedestal and Sir Robert fears the loss of her love. Mrs Cheveley, eager to benefit from Sir Robert’s situation, outwits him several times before being outwitted herself in the final act of the play.
Very well-knitted story. You will get a different persona of Oscar Wilde if you are familiar with his other works. Entertaining story with a message. ...more

So, here is a glance to what I have gathered still now. After reading these two, I'm really too curious to read more of his work. His pieces aren't for every reader but they may read to get a different taste of life. His description of complexities in human being makes his works more psychological. You have to understand every sentence to absorb the main matter. I have been deeply influenced by his writing. Whether you like or not but at a certain point of time in our life, his work definitely stimulates us. I would like to share one more thing which is, before reading, please try to read his biography so that you can relate his work with his real-life experience. ...more
I have an old connection with Sherlock Holmes and I'm really glad to present my review about the book which made me plunge into reading. When I was inI have an old connection with Sherlock Holmes and I'm really glad to present my review about the book which made me plunge into reading. When I was in theatre, I started reading this book and immediately fell into reading more. Then I gradually improved my reading skill. I don't know why it falls into the category of children's books because it still supplies the food for adult, even old also. This book has a profound impact on my life. The most important iconic figure in world literature is Sherlock Holmes.
We are all aware of his minute observation and critical analysis in every case. That is why this book is also a handbook of researchers or new detectives. Not only Conan Doyle wrote Sherlock Holmes but also many stories which don’t get discussed so much. His writing style is so lucid that anyone can easily understand what the text wants to convey.
His works are still taught in every writing class that how to make an environment in story or novel. We can learn how to create an environment in a story or novel, how to make complexity. Sherlock Holmes is a must-read for everyone who loves adventures in their life or likes complicacy or detective stories. It influences us so much that we can't keep the book aside until we finish the story. I can't mention any one as my favourite but every stories and novels.
Hats off to the creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who gave us such red memorable pieces....more

No one needs to explain what "The Arabian Nights" is about. I read another edition of this book and whenever I read, I feel so absorbed, so enchanted that I can't keep the book aside after reading one story. Every story is woven so artfully with one another that leaves you to finish the whole book instantly. One story ends and in the end, gives a clue of starting another. This book is for anyone who loves to read about magic, adventure, fantasy. I'm deeply touched with the morale of every story which shows us right and wrong in life, like Panchatantra or Aesop's Fables. We grow up reading these stories which create a mark in you. Valuable lessons in these stories make it more acceptable....more

The first poem which grabbed me instantly was " Questions from a worker who reads" which I read 7 years ago. See, what an insightful and profound the title is. It captured me so hard that I started researching more about Brecht. I started a lot about his work. Though I have a theatre actor, his work opened the door to learn more about theatre, acting, direction. His poems, plays are like a burning substance. If you touch it, you will definitely feel its strength. I find a deep connection with his society, with his country. He always had a protest in his work. In this book, there are many poems which can embraced you so much. I will definitely recommend this book to everyone. His work can give you a different perspective on life....more

As the narrator (Apurba) was enjoying the fresh air on the roadside at Esplanade (Kolkata), he saw his old friend, Paritusht. Each and every little memory started to come to his mind then. He reflected his first meeting with Paritusht in Bihar near the Ganga river. Each and every little thing about Paritusht’s growing up from a motherless child to a mature man, his love life, his studies, his transformation into Gangaputra. At last, we find a happy ending where Paritusht works in Kolkata and is staying with his wife and son.
It portrays a society’s vanity and dogmatism. We can see the difference on the basis of education and liberal mind. The use of similes enhances the richness of the story. I would like to thank the translator who has translated the piece so minutely and beautifully, of course.
Inscrutable is the heart
This story shares 3rd-dimensional love between Satish, Soma and Basant. Every character starts its story, ends it and then another person starts and ends. Here, Satish tells his own story first where he has been loving Soma since childhood days. Soma shares her love for another man. And the tutor tells his own story. Finally, there is a main twist in the end where the tutor expresses himself as Basant, Soma’s genuine love. The ending exposes why the story has been woven like this.
Down memory lane
Here, we see the description of the past of the narrator. He shares the story of Manda, a voluptuous native village girl who became Zohra, a courtesan. A 3 pages story, well narrative.
Meenakshi
It shows a moment from the history of Mithila. We find Ballal sen, the king of Bengal’s desire for lust to the most beautiful prostitute, Meenakshi. The king once wanted to share the bed with the most beautiful girl in Mithila and Meenakshi was that girl who was determined to save her culture against invading by Ballal sen. Well written story, an unknown remarkable history you will get here.
A disgraceful night of age gone by
Here, the most disgraceful moment from Mahabharata has been portrayed and the moment is Draupadi’s cloth dishevelling. We see a different perspective from Draupadi’s side where she complains against the men society who can’t protect their ladies instead of dominating the society. We read Mahabharata but don’t dig deep into it. There are many shades which we overlap. The writer has described Draupadi’s soliloquy very well. The chosen words are admirable here.
Finally, I find a pure Indian substance here. One more thing about this book is the editor who should have been a little more careful during the decorating process. I will recommend this book to every literature lover who loves to read the culture of another society. To take a little tour of the India's culture this is a must read....more

I have never read so many self-help books but only one whose impact has remained in me. Though I read it 4 years ago, I remember some lessons from it. One of Radhakrishnan Pillai's most popular leadership books "Chanakya's 7 secrets of leadership" explains the age-old rules of Chanakya by giving the example of Maharastra's former director-general of police, Dr.Sivanadhan. He has elaborated everything so minutely and logically which claims to be the most commendable thing this in this book. It captures your attention till the last page. Those of you who are looking for inspiration in life this book can be a great bet.
As much as we read books or watch movies based on Tagore’s work we get fresh perspective every time. I just finished Chokher Bali written by RabindranaAs much as we read books or watch movies based on Tagore’s work we get fresh perspective every time. I just finished Chokher Bali written by Rabindranath Tagore. The story sets most of the time in old Kolkata in 1900 where Mahendra, a college student studying medicine marries Aasha, a naïve village girl. Another woman, Binodini, a widow who was happened to marry Mahendra comes in his life. Their relationship starts to grow and effects on his family. Everybody in the family, from his mother Rajlakshmi, his wife Aasha, his aunt Annapurna, and his childhood friend Bihari comes to know the fact. Mahendra leaves his family, his own house to live with Binodini. At the same time Binodini starts to love Bihari and Mahendra doubts about that. Complication of the story starts to grow little by little. At end of the novel we see Mahendra comes back again to his family, Binodini goes to pilgrim with Annapurna and Bihari makes a small village for poor people where he will be providing medical service. It tells the story of a period of 3-4 years. Tagore portrayed every character so deftly which claims to be mentioned. I specially mention the character of Binodini, so complex, daring but simply depicted. Every character is so alive in the novel that sometimes we feel it’s happening with us. Sometimes I think that I see two identity of a character, in one side Mahendra who is soft, weak by heart, easily captured and in another side Bihari who is strong, reliable and not easily captured by anyone. In one side, Aasha, who is very naïve and another side, Binodini, who can enchant any man by her way of talking and behaviour. If you read Rabindranath’s other stories before Chokher Bali, you can understand the growing maturity of him as a writer. Some people can feel disturbed because of some soft erotic or adulterous scenes but in my opinion, those scenes are very justifiable for the story. If I talk about its relevance, then this novel can be an all-time wealth because it doesn’t become old at any time. It validates for long time till human lives on this earth. It’s an eternal wealth in literature. Complexity in relationship, our complex mind won’t get demolished so early. I would recommend every booklover to read this at least once to enjoy the aesthetics of literature. And if he or she is a literature student then it is a must read. People who love to read detective, crime, thriller novel they can change their taste by reading this novel. ...more

Kafka’s work can’t be interpreted in one way buIf you want to understand Kafka you have to dig deep. Otherwise, Kafka would be difficult to perceive. Kafka’s work can’t be interpreted in one way but in many ways. I just finished this piece. There are five pieces including “The metamorphosis”. His work shares some complex nature of humans.
In the penal colony Here, in the story, we see that a clash between a fanatical person and a liberal, humanitarian person which ends in the win of the latter person. This is also considered as Kafka’s other masterpiece but not like the judgement or the metamorphosis. The story can be interpreted in another way where we can say that humans live in the same situation.
The Metamorphosis I had been thinking about reading The Metamorphosis for a long time. When I saw the title and read a little summary of this novella, it attracted me instantly. One of the great masterpieces from him. It is totally a new kind of piece to me. His pieces are very contemporary. As long as our human psychology exists, his work will serve a highly discussible topic. To know the complex human nature, its psychology, it must be read. Translation part seems a little difficult but clear. There is a unique style to tell a story. As you read it you can follow its spoken way of telling a story, not rhetoric. A person’s worries, anxieties, uncertainty, unhappiness about life are seen here. Some people can find it difficult which I have already seen if they are not accustomed to some experimental pieces of work.
The judgement The judgement which was written overnight is another great work. Here the story is simply a drama between a tyrannical father and his son, Georg. It can be interpreted as Kafka's father himself. It finishes in an unsettling way. Every piece is so engaging. Kafka's writing style is so modern which is admirable.
Letters to his father A letter to his father from Kafka where he erupted all his grievance, agitation on his father. Here we can picturize Kafka's childhood and grow up. The more appreciable in this piece is his way of describing so intellectually, so logically.
Meditation This is another piece in this book. It consists of some pieces of short stories which express happiness, sorrow, anxieties.
