First of all, 10/10 on the world building. It reminds of LOTR, to be honest. Except with more humans and dragons. God, how amazingly she made up the different cultures and religious beliefs for the 4 different regions. It felt a bit confusing at first because it was like learning geography haha. I had to study the maps a bit (but I loved it) to really have a feel of all the journeying they did.
I know Ead was basically the MC even though there were several POVs but I wish Tané and Seiiki were explored a bit more because - dragons! I'd have thought that being a Miduchi would be explored further - how they protect Seiiki and its seas and things. Kinda sad the dragon scenes were so little (I mean, for a book supposedly about dragons... so I was a little disappointed)
Btw I hated Roos. I couldn't even see the point of him in the story. He honestly does nothing but betray everyone (while somehow justifying it to himself) and I /do not/ understand why Shannon was so desperate to give him this redemption arc.
Add this to a slew of characters that aren't really interesting - and they die, too, but you don't really care. Also, for Loth, I'm sorry, but I honestly don't care about him. He's such a non-character I'm surprised he took up lots of chapters....more
TBH I'm not sure if I enjoyed it... it feels like a glorified love story with fantasy as its backdrop. Also for some reason, you get thrust into this TBH I'm not sure if I enjoyed it... it feels like a glorified love story with fantasy as its backdrop. Also for some reason, you get thrust into this whole mission wherein the FL saves the ML when you haven't even gotten attached to either one of them to actually properly care. As such, the whole past and future visions meant little to nothing to me, and I had to force myself to finish it.
The phrases are also a bit weird? What in the world was "Ceony's skeleton slumped within her skin" supposed to mean? You're telling me she can feel her skeleton? Also, during the heart exploration thing (which was exhausting to read), "rivers of blood" or some variation of it is written so many times and for what. We get it, there's lots of blood.
Also, I was highly disappointed with the paper spells... All we got was some paper birds, chains, planes, and stars. Origami spells, more like. Origami magicians. I wish they expounded on other paper spells - like Jonto and Fennel. I'd have loved to read more on how Emery Folded them.
If anyone's watched "Read or Die" they'd immediately think this book made paper magicians so lame. Papermasters>>>...more

And everything normal happens alongside the fantastic goings-on. It does get a bit confusing, but is magical in a way that you kind of just accept it, like all that fantasy is reality....more

Of an alien meant to kill the human race and instead finding beauty, and love, and so many things that made him want to stay, to /protect/. And being so alien to everything human that he says the simplest things that hold so much meaning, especially to humans who tend to overcomplicate things.
The ending was kind of a mishmash though, to be honest. Sort of like Haig wasn't sure how to end the book (also, I highly doubt killing a fellow Vonnadorian could come with little to no repercussions? Or maybe Haig didn't want to go full sci-fi with more aliens coming over)....more

But I so loved the idea of phantom settlements being a sort of copyright trap, and moreso the idea that they could be something you can get to so long as you have a map. It's so magical.
The only thing that irked me is how the MC keeps going on about how it can't be real, over and over again throughout the story, when she keeps seeing it with her own eyes. Not just that, the way she treats the people around her (especially the people who care about her) as if they don't matter unless they align with her goals. I guess it's realistic that way but really annoying to read haha....more
