This started out as subject, “6592” was going through another round of injections. In an experimental program set-up by the Draekta. They had invaded Earth but weren’t able to completely dominate the planet. They are looking for a way to mutate humans into biological weapons against their foe Not a bad premise.
6592, or Julia, a new name she adopts, or Sierra, her maiden name was taken at age thirteen and has spent the last thirteen years as a subject until she is liberated from her captors. We get a glimpse into her past as memories slowly but surely start returning from his past life. Her stepfather who sold her to the enemy, which you find about later, a lasting relationships with her twin brothers and mother, who she has very fond memories.
We also get a very brief look at the special abilities she is developing from the experiments but nothing of true substance.
The execution wasn’t very gripping. Way too much description about every little detail especially when it came to describing rooms and getting in and out of cars. This became mundane to say the least and had me skimming when these scenes occurred. I mean, how many times does an author need to describe getting to a vehicle, attached a seat-belt, backing up and then sitting in silence during the ride.
Another issue for me was the character development. There isn’t one stable character in the story. They are all angry and paranoid. Doors are constantly being slammed which dulls the characters personalities. And the that goes for everyone: Elsie, Astrid, Henry, Hank, Alex, Sierra, Jace, Logan and even the protagonists the Draekta. There are others, but you get the gist.
There are plenty of grammatical issues with the work that can easily be cleaned up with a good proofreader or editor. IE:
Ch 5 Elsie came out a few minutes later. This phrase is duplicated in the next sentence
Ch 12 “started cry.” Should be crying
Ch 16 “I heard Logan asked.” Should be ask.
There are at least ten more issues that need to be cleaned up.
Overall, while it’s a quick read it just wasn’t very engaging. Too many gaps. I mean, after she re-united with her mother and brothers, why was there no follow-up meeting or conversation with them?
Three star push.
