From New York Times bestselling author Susan Stoker comes a sizzling suspense about the romance that blossoms between two strangers during a snowstorm and the stalker who threatens them both.

Riggs “Chappy” Chapman didn’t expect to be disrupted at his remote cabin in the woods. But when a stray dog arrives on his porch, he winds up finding a stray woman, too, trudging through the snowstorm in search of shelter. His military days may be behind him, but Chappy is hardwired to protect her from the storm and whatever it is she’s running from.

Carlise Edwards didn’t expect her car to break down in the Maine wilderness. All she wants is to escape whoever is stalking her back home. There’s no way anyone’s going to find her and Chappy deep in the forest, especially not in dangerous weather. But she finds it hard to mind the circumstances when the company is this stimulating.

As the snowstorm rages, Chappy and Carlise find that, despite the cold, they can generate plenty of heat of their own…but there’s more than just natural dangers lurking in the woods.

This was my second time reading this book (so far) and I still loved every single second! Riggs will forever be on my book boyfriend list. Carlise is such a sweetheart.. I loved her relationship with Baxter. I wanted to cry and jump with joy at the same time. The ending scenes still made me cry, and probably always will. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. I can't wait for the series to be complete!

Jan 2023 review: Absolutely LOVED this!

~Riggs is looking forward to alone time in his cabin in the middle of the woods. He never expects a random dog to lead him to a woman who then ends up caring for him while he’s sick. Carlise is only trying to escape her stalker ex boyfriend - she definitely didn’t plan on being stranded in the middle of a snowstorm in Maine.~

Just wow. This was so beautiful. I’m usually a sucker for the man taking care of his sick woman BUT this was adorable. Riggs is such a cuddle bug when he’s sick and having ‘issues’ sleeping. I love how quickly he opened up to her after that. And the way they take care of each other in very different ways is so heartwarming.

The stalker.. I was shocked but also not at the same time. I had a bad feeling about this person when introduced and I’m glad to know my gut is trustworthy.

Honestly though, highly recommend!! Riggs is definitely added to my list of book boyfriends.

*I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review with my honest opinion.*

I love that we are getting new team to fall in love with! The first chapter was hard to read but necessary to see why these guys decide it's time to get out of the military. One of my favorite things happened in this book and that is some good quality time with the couple together. They are isolated through most of this book and still there was drama they had to work together to battle. It's my favorite kind of romance. I just prefer the couple working together against the world instead of against each other. I'm looking forward to the next one in the series!

4.5 ⭐️’s This is the first time I have read a book by author Susan Stoker. Suspense romance fiction.
The plot was not too over the top. The story had tenderness. There was some predictability. I usually do not like it when the characters fall for each other too fast, in this case, the nightingale syndrome fits well. For those who want the hot and race bits, there are a couple. I like stories where the guy is truly a nice guy like Riggs. We need more guys that ask for permission in novels. There is one thing I don’t understand in the cabin, how does the pipes not freeze with out electricity or gas for heat? Is the fireplace enough to have running water and no other heat source? Burst pipes is a real issue.

The story starts with Riggs and three other special force team members held captive. Once rescued they decided to start over in Maine together. Still hunted by the past Riggs needs his annual break to isolate himself at the cabin in the middle of nowhere.

Plague by childhood trauma, abusive ex, and an unknown stalker Carlise is running. Little did she know she was running into a big snowstorm. She crashes during white-out conditions and has no choice but to start walking.

Riggs starts to feel something coming on when he was preparing for the storm. Just as he was about to settle in he finds a skinny dog scratching at the door. In hopes of rescuing the dog, he follows it out. That is how he came upon Carlise walking in the storm.

With nowhere to go and a way to contact anyone, Carlise follows Riggs to his cabin. Riggs falls ill and is delirious for days. Grateful that Carlise did her best to nurse a stranger back to health Riggs promises to protect her.

I received an advanced reader's copy from the publisher Montlake via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Overall: 🌟🌟 /5
Spice Level: 🌶🌶/5
Recommend: If you like quick, easy stories to read, yes.. If you need a palette cleans then also yes.
Re-read/re-listen: No
Trope:Insta love, one bed, forced proximity

• Story:
We have Riggs ex Military and a POW. Making roots in a small town and right before a winter storm hits his secluded cabin up in the mountains. A woman litterally walks past his property. They fins themselves snowed in, and Sparks fly.
• Favorite parts:
The dog! Period.
• Thoughts:
I am really struggling with Susan Stoker books now. I swear the last 6 books I have just skimmed and get the idea of what is going on. This book started out with me really liking it and thinking yes. This is going to be just like her Silverstone series. (Loved that series), but at 45%, I was like, nope, I was wrong. It was soooo beyond sweet that it felt cringe worthy and over the top. I am also picking up on the same explanation over and over again. Which is the cause of me skipping parts in the book. I just am sad. I liked earlier books by this author, but they are starting to blend together. Same dialog between the FMC and MC. The guys in the books are not appealing to me anymore. I also was not sold on the insta love. I love me some insta love, but for some reason. This did not hit the mark. The ending and stalker situation was rushed and not thoroughly thought out.
Slight spoiler. It is not cute when they are about to get down and dirty, and the author explains the characters grooming in their nether regions. Like, no, I don't care that she has a trim bush because she doesn't want to feel or look like a kid. (Litterally as he is going to go downtown on the downstairs area) 😳. Why? Why, do we need that awkwardness. I am probably done with reading this author. I honestly don't know if I will finish this series, maybe because it's on KU.

I don't know how to express how much I love this book. This is book 1 of the Game of Chance series, and I absolutely love this crew of ex military turned lumberjacks. I immediately fell in love with JJ, Chappy, Bob, and Cal.

The first book is Chappy and Carlise's story. She is running from a stalker and stranded in the woods. In enters Baxter...who leads Chappy to her.

I could not put this book down. Their connection is unmistakable. This book is full of sweet and lustful moments. All of which come to a climax when we learn who her stalker is. Buckle up for the ride.

Riggs "Chappy" Chapman and his 3 best friends, JJ, Bob and Cal had been through hell as they were held captive as POW's in the military special forces. Once they were freed, and home they had made a pact to move to Maine to run their own Lumber Jack business together. They made good on it and their business was going great. It was break time and Chappy was going to take a break up at his remote mountain cabin in the woods to get some peace and quiet and do some reading. He arrives just in time before a huge snowstorm hits, but then a stray dog arrives on his porch, he is led to a freezing cold stray woman too, barely able to walk much further in the snowstorm, searching for shelter.

His military days may be over, but Chappy's morals tell him he should protect her from the storm and whatever it is she's running away from. Carlise Edwards didn't expect her car to break down in the middle of nowhere during this terrible snowstorm. All she wanted to do is to get as far away as possible from whoever is stalking her back home. There’s no way anyone’s going to find her and Riggs deep in the forest, especially not in this dangerous weather. She also didn't expect Riggs (as he introduced himself to her) to become so sick he passes out and to have to take care of him for a few days as soon as he gets her into the safety of his cabin. The stray dog is too scared to come in, but she makes him a makeshift bed on the porch out of blankets and names him Baxter. She brings him food to keep him fed. After a few days, Riggs is well enough to become aware of himself and Carlise and to thank her for taking care of him. After he secretly views his hidden camera's, he sees that she is genuine and simply took care of him and did not snoop through his things. He knows he can trust her, so he gets to know her better and quickly falls for her. After leaving an abusive relationship, Carlise finds this wonderful, perfect gentleman who takes such good care of her almost like a dream come true. She falls for him just as quickly. Eventually, Baxter warms up to them and feels brave enough to join them in the cabin. He is so sweet and so protective of Carlise.

This is a sizzling suspense story about the romance that blossoms between two strangers during a snowstorm and the stalker who threatens them both. The comradery between Chappy, JJ, Bob and Cal is so close and special, they are insanely protective of each other and Carlise at all times. The danger on the mountain is real, and together they will take care of the threat!

A great starting book to a new Susan Stoker series! I got an ARC and this is my review.

This new group of guys have seen the worst of humanity up close and personal and just want to live a slow and relaxing life. Riggs finds solitude in his little cabin in the woods and waits out a storm. Little does he know that trouble is brewing and not just from the skies.

I really enjoyed this book and had a hard time putting it down to get my normal daily stuff done. Different than Susan's early teams as this group are veterans. I love how Susan has previously dove into the active military and more recently have explored characters after they serve. To me, it makes these characters more realistic and human, and not the superheroes that special forces seem to be. There is still plenty of suspense that occurs and a whole lot of happily ever after!

Can't wait to read more!

Can I have my time back please? How did this book get such high reviews?? The prologue sucked me in but it was all downhill from there. Maybe I'm just not into the 3rd person writing style. I couldn't get into the characters, it was unbelievably predictable, and super unrealistic. 🙄

𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄

I had wanted to read this author for some times, so when I saw this eARC opportunity, I jumped on it.
Plus discovering an author with the first book in a new series, is probably the best option.

This tale is such a lovely slow burn sensual romance with two sweethearts, both well deserving their HEA.
They have an instant attraction, their chemistry off the chart but her poor experience with the men from her past left her wary and stands between them, holding her back. But Riggs is a patient man, More than ready to wait for her to trust him.
Carlise is on the run, trying to distance away from her present circumstances, a stalker whose threats have escalated. Thus how she finds herself stranded in an unknown place during a winter storm.
Riggs with his friends has turned his back to his military career, yet he is still a protector. Why even sick, resting in his rejuvenating isolated place, he rescues a woman lost in a snow tempest.

Carlise and Riggs are so sweet together, there is no conflict between just the time needed to learn about the other. Yet they immediately feel they are secure with one another, enough to begin making plans for something more in the future.
If they will have one as the threats against Carlise ascend to a threatening level.
A lovely sweet romance between two wounded beings and their mascot little hero Bax.

💌 Forced proximity
💌 One bed
💌 Instant love
💌 Small town romance
💌 Romance with suspense
💌 3rd POV

I would like to thank the author, publisher and NetGalley for this ARC. I rarely read romance with 3rd POV so this is quite an experience for me but the blurb was so interesting!

Since this is the first book in an interconnected series, the book introduced 4 military men, Chappy, JJ, Bob and Cal with Chappy as the MMC for this book. After having the traumatic event in the last mission, the 4 of then decided to retire and move to Newton, Maine. They also open up a business called Jack’s Lumber.

Chappy had this habit of retreating into his safe haven, a cabin in the forest, for a few weeks whenever he wanted to chill and rest. He would bring his books and some supplies there but this time, a snow storm is coming.

Carlisle Edwards was running from a stalker and by chance, she stumbled upon Chappy and his cabin. Due to the snow storm, she had to seek refuge for a week in his cabin. Despite Chappy being a stranger to her, she would choose him any day compared to being frozen in the storm. The first few days were uneventful as Carlisle spent her days caring for the sick Chappy.

If you know me, I am never a fan of instant love and lust but this book! Somehow the instant love works out for me. I could actually see the connection between the two of them. Yes, it was instant connection, but I love how the author did some build up with the connection. They weren’t like all head over heels with each other from the start.

Despite being haunted with his trauma, I love that Chappy was such a gentle guy with his protectiveness. He made it his mission to make Carlisle comfortable and feeling safe with him. I definitely am curious about JJ, Cal and Bob! Can’t wait to see those guys in their own book!

The plot twist with the stalker was so good! I did have my suspicions with the stalker identity, and the moment it was revealed I was like OMG! I knew it but it was such a shocking to learn the motive behind the stalking. I can see the suspense and romance go hand in hand in this book!

I saw the cover and immediately knew it was going to be spicy. And indeed it delivered spice.

This story is insta love done right.

Carlise Edwards gets stuck in a storm basically in the middle of nowhere. Hot military guy, Riggs aka Chappy, finds her wandering in the storm and lets her stay at his cabin until things get sorted out. At first he was skeptical of her since she was stranger, but then he slowly developed a soft spot for Carlise. He would protect her from all the harm in the world if he could. Chappy is so down bad for her. The more Carlise is around Chappy, the stronger her feelings are for him.

This story has so many cute tropes…one bed, bad dream but she's there moment, force proximity & small town.

Susan Stoker’s writing was so easy to follow. The back and forth between Riggs and Carlise’s pov was done so smoothly. It felt natural and paced well for a story told in third pov.

This was my first book from this author and I really enjoyed it. Definitely gonna explore more books from this author in the future.

Thanks for the arc, netgalley!

Yet again, this author has turned some things on their ear. Yes, we have ex-military men. Yes, there is danger out there. And yes, there is definitely heat between Riggs and Carlise. Heck, there’s even a beloved four legged friend to be had, but I have the distinct feeling that this series just might turn out to be something utterly unlike any she’s written before. And I mean that in a good way.

Riggs and his friends have lived through torture. Literally. And they want peace now. The way they chose their current lives is actually a little amusing, if a tad morbid at the time. But that’s okay because it fits perfectly with the humor and personalities of these men. So when Riggs needs it the most, a stranger comes along to help him out. All while he helps her, too. The forced time together in a smallish space causes a friendship, comfort, desire, and so much more to flourish for him and Carlise. But she’s got some problems hounding her. And the root of those problems is a tad surprising.

I adored this book because Susan doesn’t shy away from the grit and grime. She also doesn’t give us wallflower damsels, waiting for saving. Oh, no. She always gives us strong women who are able to handle their business but who also are made 100x better with a partner. And the same is true of her men. Riggs can handle himself just fine, but he’s also a truly good man who sees exactly who Carlise is at her core and wants his chance with her. He’s not afraid of emotion or communication. And she isn’t either. So while it seems unlikely at first, the relationship building is actually perfectly paced for our couple. It helps that they’re both smart and resourceful, and a dog loves them both. So it’s a little bit of “save me, save you” and a lot of love in the end. So much that I’m wondering about Cal and his story. I have a feeling there’s quite a bit of heartache coming ahead, and I’m definitely here for whatever happens next.

Going into a book blind can be very hit or miss for me. This was my first book by Susan Stoker and I didn’t know anything about it, besides it being a romance.

Normally I’m not into books with military men, but Riggs and his friends aren’t in the military anymore and we only get a short glimpse at that time, they are now lumberjacks in Maine, which I really liked as a setting.

The writing is in 3rd person narration. I’m not a huge fan of that, but I didn’t hate it. I still enjoyed reading about the characters, even though I wasn’t completely immersed in the story. The narration definitely pulled me out of this world once or twice.

The two main characters, Riggs (who’s called Chappy by his mates) and Carlisle (who has the most Twilight name ever: Carlisle Renee Edwards), fall in love instantly. Another thing I didn’t love about this book. But both characters are so likable and good for each other, that I was really fond of them and their interactions.

The “mystery” around Carlisle’s stalker was rather obvious but it wasn’t the main focus of this book and felt more like a byproduct to me. It was necessary to get more information about why and how Carlisle acted, but it didn’t surprise me at all, when the secret was lifted.

This was a very easy and sweet read. I found myself 😊 while reading a good chunk of it. If you're looking for zero drama/angst between the two MCs, this is your read. It was also quite insta-love, but I enjoyed the slice-of-life aspect so I didn't mind.

It was also a bit predictable or one could easily foreshadow how certain things would pan out, but I think that was more with reading a lot of Stoker's books than anything. I'm definitely reading Cal's story next.

The book was great until Riggs woke up and was declaring I love you’s 7 days in and what pushed me over the edge was his fantasy about impregnating her. Just no. I guess I will always have the earlier books because I don’t know what’s up with the recent ones. Even the dialogue was cringe worthy.

I found myself laughing at the game of rock, paper scissors. What a way for these guys to decide the rest of their lives! But a great distraction!! I also loved that they followed through with it and seem to be thriving.

How crazy was it how Carlise showed up at Riggs cabin. I loved that the dog helped save Carlise and how both her and Riggs did their best by the dog afterwards. It was especially good towards the end, when Baxter needed to do some saving again.

I liked the quiet time that these 2 spent in the cabin getting to know each other. It really cut down on the usual bullshit people do when first meeting and being attracted to someone. They built the trust fast, which was a good thing.

The drama at the end was so crazy! Really didn't not see who the bad person was and why.

I'm glad that these 2 got past things and are planning their future and can be happy!

This was a great balance of intrigue and emotions! This is the start of the series, and it starts by us meeting the characters at their worst and in trouble. We fast forward and meet them as they are now, still dealing with their past trauma, but living their best planned lives now.

Our hero has an isolated cabin he escapes to, and this is where we have our story. From a dog showing up, to a woman on the run stranded, and an untimely illness, sets everything up. These two connect before they even really know each other, but the more they get to know, the more they bond. They just know where things are right, and this is what feels right for them. This is two people, in forced proximity, both with their own problems, finding out about each other, and falling in love. I loved the characters, their story, and cannot wait for more!

It’s always a wonderful experience to start a new series by this author. Her protective military men are to die for. Her innocent yet strong women are always easy to fall in love with.

Riggs “Chappy” Chapman smiled as he approached his cabin, instant calm descending.

This one was no exception. Action packed and a beautiful love story. An alpha man who is sexy and resourceful. This is the beginning of another awesome adventure.

I always love a new series and this one is sounding amazing so far!

Absolutely loved both Chappy and Carlise (who I definitely pronounced as “Carlisle” even though we were given the right pronunciation on like page 2 of her 🫢)

The climax of the book was exciting and even though I kinda anticipated it all, I loved it! I’m digging all of the other Jack’s Lumber guys though especially can’t wait for JJ’s story (which knowing Stoker, will be the last in the series 😭)
