That Boy #7

That Promise

Rate this book
What happens to childhood promises when you grow up?

Growing up, Devaney Diamond and Chase Mackenzie promised to go to college together. But it’s been two years since the summer that changed everything between them, and their friendship hasn’t recovered.

Now, Dani is faced with all the challenges of her freshman year of college—navigating rush week, making new friends, and living on her own—which is both exhilarating and intimidating. In high school, Dani was homecoming queen and head cheerleader. She should be able to handle the pressure, but college has been more overwhelming than she expected.

Chase, on the other hand, is living the dream. It’s his senior year of high school, his football team is hoping to go undefeated, and he’s being heavily recruited.

When Dani returns home for a weekend, she realizes why college feels so overwhelming—she doesn’t have Chase to share it with. In hopes of salvaging their friendship, she repeats an old tradition—sneaking over to his room with pizza after his game. But instead of fixing their friendship, they end up sleeping together.

Chase is thrilled that Dani is back in his life, but being friends with benefits when feelings are involved is more complicated than Chase imagined.

Will Chase and Dani work through their feelings for one another, or will their childhood promise be shattered when Chase announces what college he will commit to?

After reading That Summer last year I was so ready to get more from Chase and Devaney. Things have been strained between these two since the fall out. Now Devaney is getting ready for her first year at college and Chase is starting his senior year and they find a way to become friends again.

I love friends to lovers stories so much. Especially when a couple has been lifelong friends. Dani and Chase both love each other so much, but it's hard to deal with a love that big at that age when everything is changing. They try for friends, but their friendships keep evolving.

I'll be honest and say I was expecting this one to be sweet and emotional more than anything, but it ended up being way more angsty than I expected. I was stressed and upset more than once, but it made for an unputdownable read. Dani and Chase are made for one another, just like Phillip and Jayden and I'm so glad their story is continuing.

This is a series I have been reading for almost a decade and I'm obsessed with these families and these books. The Diamonds and Mackenzies are amazing and I'll never get tired of reading their stories. I seriously hope Jillian keeps writing these books, because I need a Damon book in my life!

“I heard you’re in trouble,” Dani says, startling me when I enter my room. She’s lying on her stomach sideways across my bed like she owns it. Her elbows are on the mattress, her chin nestled on her fist. Her knees bent and her feet up in the air. I could be eight or eighteen. It’s like a moment wrapped in time.

I hate to say it, but I was really disappointed with "That Promise." Dani was very unlikable in this installment treating Chase like second-rate. Her whining and daily pity-parties got old real fast. I love this family and have enjoyed this series, but I'm also really ready to let Danny Diamond stand aside and give the next generation centerstage to tell their stories without so many interruptions from mom and dad's regurgitation of the past. And I'm also seriously sick of reading about the private plane always sitting ready and available for the kids -- and the one-for-each-day-of-the-week fancy automobiles meant to impress.

Chase remains the most sincere and normal of the bunch. I was really hoping for him to forget Nebraska and pick another college. Of course, I knew it wouldn't happen -- but I hoped.

Hate the long year's wait for the next installment, "That Forever," scheduled for June, 2022. Still, I've been in it from the beginning and I'll stick until the end. And meanwhile, keeping my fingers crossed that Dani matures a bit before then.

Is there anything better than reading a new story in a favorite series? I never have to re-read anything beforehand to remind myself what happened in the last book because the characters are so ingrained in my mind. Being with the Diamond and Mackenzie families is like sinking into my favourite chair in a cosy lounge by the fire, it’s so comforting and familiar.

That Promise is the continuation of Chase & Dani’s story after things were left up in the air at the end of That Summer. Teenage angst continues to rule as these two try and navigate a new normal after what happened last summer. Dani is heading off to college and it is the first time she has been away from her family so a huge adjustment for all of them.

After Dani’s first trip home from college her and Chase fall into a FWB thing, despite the fact they have been dating other people. Chase will take any little bit of Dani he can get, he is biding his time until she figures out they are meant to be. Dani, Chase, Damon and Haley always planned to go to the same college but this is all now at risk with Chase reconsidering his future college plans.

Chase knows that Dani may find happiness at college with someone other than him. It seems that the saying ‘promises are made to be broken’ is going to gut-wrenchingly come true. Dani battles with feelings of jealousy and a bit of fomo whenever she is home. She does still worry about what people will think if she comes out and dates Chase, this really hurts him and makes him question if she truly does care about him. Chase is loyal and patient, just like his father. He won’t give up on his dream until Dani figures out what her heart truly wants.

I loved the character development with Lori in this story, Dani really needed her mum during this transition in her young adult life and Jillian did a brilliant job redeeming Lori. Like every human being on this planet, we shouldn’t be defined by our personal flaws and I love how this storyline played out.

I hope that Jillian continues to write books in this series for many years to come.

Tears! So many tears! What a rollercoaster of emotions this book just took me on! Literally I cried so many tears reading this book. Heck, I’m sobbing writing this. First off, Jillian Dodd’s writing is phenomenal! She knows how to pull at your heartstrings. I have been a huge fan of hers ever since I read the first book “That Boy,” which is the parents, Jadyn, Phillip and Danny. If you haven’t read those books, they are absolute must reads!!! I love when books continue on in their story, you get so many more details you didn’t think you would. These books blow me away each one Jillian writes. Just when you think she can’t get any better, she scores a touchdown with the next book. And let me tell you, this one is just that and soooo good!

This masterpiece of a story makes you feel every emotion you can expect. I was so nervous going into it, as the last book left off with such a shocker. To say this was my favorite when I love them all, showcases how wild and fantastic this book truly is. You get thrown so many shocking surprises. Your heart will break only to be put back together. See, rollercoaster of emotions. I laughed, I cried, I swooned, I was angry, I was sad, did I mention I swooned wicked hard? Most of all, I loved how this book turned out. Not at all how I thought it would go, it had me on the edge of my seat.

My favorite characters were always Jadyn and Danny, but Chase has bumped them out of that spot to steal my heart! He just is the total package! This book was fantastic. It gives you all the feels. It teaches you about love, not taking anything for granted and most of all patience! This is an absolute must devour book! It deserves all the stars and praise! Thank you to Jillian for giving us this series and for these beautiful characters who I truly love and adore so much! I can’t wait to see what else you give us within this series.

No. Just, no. The 2 stars are for
⭐Chase
⭐everyone else that's not Dani or Lori
So yes maybe Chase could have done some things differently but, and I cannot emphasize this enough, He. Was. Trying. To grow up to figure out life like every teenager. Dani all she does is worry about what others think and act like a spoiled brat. And really? trying to redeem Lori? Makes NO Sense!! She's FINALLY happy NOW she's working on her own issues because she's married to a billionaire?? Hello? Yeah, No. I am not buying that for 1 second!!

I love Dani and Chase so much. I have been rooting for them since BEFORE their first book.

This book is a ride. I got so excited then my little heart got broken so many times. I love how much of a roller coaster of emotions I have reading Jillian Dodd's books. But all of the characters are so lovable that I end up not being able to put them down even in the parts that I am sad.

One of the things I really enjoyed is how real and flawed Dani is. She struggles with what other people think of her and she struggles with making decisions and not really telling anyone else until it's too late. That is so relatable and I find myself relating to her quite a bit even when she makes me angry or upset. In comparison, Chase seems like just a ridiculously good person. Not really so good as to be unbelievable but still really good.

I enjoyed this continuation of Dani and Chase's relationship. I like that it isn't perfect and it's messy but they both end up working really hard to make it work. I'm excited to continue to see where the story goes.

Also, please tell me that Damon gets a book because I love him.

First...if you have not read That Summer, you MUST do that before starting this book (even though this is book #7 in a series, you only need to read book #6 followed by this one). Now, if you are caught up...how much do we LOVE Chase and Dani! Jillian Dodd writes teenaged angst and love like no other! This story is filled with drama, football, family, friends and love.

I am conflicted on my rating because I enjoyed everything Dani and Chase but what really lowered my rating is the focus on the parents story and the flashbacks.

This book covers a 3-4 month time period and honestly I wish it was set over more time. So much happened in such a short amount of time to the point where it felt a little unrealistic which is honestly okay with me more often than not. But with the constant talk of the mom and dads relationship and the parallels between them and their children I was over it. I also feel like there was a serious missed opportunity to expand more on Dani and the relationship with her mom and how that seriously shaped her and how she views herself and her life.

I am BEYOND excited for a 3rd book but so sad we have to wait a year. I loved every moment with Dani and Chase and I hope that the next book is centralized more on them.

PS... Damon is still annoying to me. Dont know why but I would also love to see his eventual *fingers crossed* love story.

I still recommend this series... :)

"I want the kind of love worth fighting for, Dani, and I wish with all my heart that this were us for real."

A few summers ago, on a family trip to the Ozark's, Chase and Dani went from being childhood BFF's to something much more. Before it got all screwed up. That Promise will have readers hearts beating out of their chests! Tears will be POURING down your cheeks. I ADORE Chase and Dani! They're like...

and like...

Damon makes me LOL. Is Pace sticking around? I'm totally shipping him and our Hay Girl! Jillian Dodd did a fantastic job with Chase and Dani's character growth. Redemption. Will Chase and Dani seek forgiveness? Make things right? Heal? The epilogue has me REELING (and squealing!) in the BEST way and TOTALLY ready for the next book!

This series just gets better and better. Chase and Dani are destined to be together...but only if they can put aside hurt feelings and focus on putting each other first. Lots of angst on their journey with Chase dating Lacey and Dani away at college. I love the teen emotions, the nurturing parental advice and the innocence in discovering all of the firsts. First time away from home. First love. First time choosing people you want to surround yourself with. All of it...the growth and maturity of watching the Mackenzie and Diamond kids coming of age and finding their own love. I have fallen in love with all of the characters and reading their continuing story always makes me smile, laugh and sometimes cry. Such a sweet series that you won't want to miss.

Amazing

Jillian Dodd has such a way with words that I wish I had to describe just what this book, as well as all the previous ones, have meant to me. The friendship between these two families is something everyone should wish for. And Dani & Chase having such an amazing relationship growing up. And then to have to deal with peer pressure and teen emotions makes it that much harder. But the maturity that these two show is something special. Can't wait for the next book.

That Promise • That Boy series - Book 7
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
@jilliandodd

Oh my goodness- this book! I’m honestly speechless. The families that make up this series feel like my family too & reading their stories always gives me the warm and fuzzies.

Chase and Dani’s story has been an emotional roller coaster. “Watching” them grow from babies and seeing their love unfold has been so much fun. Who knew fictional characters could worm their way into your heart like this?!

This book made me laugh, cry (both happy & sad tears, pissed me off, and gave me goosebumps. Jillian has done it again with this next installment of the Mackenzies & Diamonds. Can’t wait for more of their lives to unfold!

There aren’t enough stars in the galaxy to rate this book.

I loved it so damn much, y’all. That Promise was hands down my most anticipated release of 2021. The wait was torture but oh so worth it!!

That Promise had so many absolutely SWOONFEST moments. I just want to relive them all again already. Chase & Dani have a chemistry that could set this world on fire, if only love were that easy for these two. There seems to always be something in their way.

That Summer ripped my heart apart. But I assure you, That Promise stitched it all back together again. I’m already looking forward to That Forever. Here’s to hoping it keeps my heart full and ties a pretty little bow around it.

** Minor Spoilers ahead **

Well, I guess I have to kiss this series goodbye. I really am sorry because I love Jadyn and Philip and Danny. But their kids?? OMG, they are so annoying! The previous book I didn't enjoy because I didn't find Dani likable but at least I had liked Chase. But now with this book, I've decided that he's not that great either. And the worst is that their story is starting to ruin their parents' story for me because I really just find them both so spoiled! And it's possibly their parents fault...
Anyway, everything in this story felt forced and artificial. The main one being the new personality that Damon and Dani's mom acquired as she decided she wants to be Jadyn and Jenniffer's BFF. And I was like: "yeeeeaaah, cus that really happens in real life". Talking about coparenting when their kids are already 18?? Little too late for that, right? But there were also those flashbacks when the kids were trying to get what was going on in their lives based on their parents' relationship. When does that ever happen? Unless, of course, it's a Full House episode! So unnatural and forced. Plus, all the drama was essentially based on overreaction from immature people who apparently don't have any social skill to deal with crisis, romantic or not. I lost count of how many times I just rolled my eyes and thought "Welcome to the real world, kid!" And then Chase is the one lecturing Dani about "time to grow up" when he is having unsafe sex with 2 different girls!?! Oh, but it's ok because Lacey knows they are not committed. She has just been his constant booty call for the past year. Nice!
I really think that Dani and Chase had the potential for an epic love story, but I am afraid their weak personalities won't allow that. And before they make me hate their parents for raising these spoiled, immature, good for nothing kids, I'd rather cut the ties here. I admit the down the road curiosity might hit me and I will eventually read the next book but based on the past ones I can almost assure that I won't enjoy it. It would be more like an obligation, as a book that I have to read to write a paper for school.
In case you're wondering why I am not rating this book with 1 star, I'll tell you with one word: Damon. He is the only character in this book and the previous one whom I find truly genuine, funny, loyal and likable. So, 2 stars it is...

Maybe my favourite so far…….

Chase trying to make Eddie jealous maybe my favourite version of him ever.

This book made me crazy because I just want them to be together so I of course want Lacey to go byyyee even though it’s chase and Dani’s fault they aren’t together.

Sad JJ had to go through more heartache 😔

Decided I’m team Damon and I need books on him now!!!

I thought the premise of the story was going to be us seeing how much Dani has matured while away at college. So not the case. She is still the same self absorbed, worried about appearances, spoiled brat.
Nothing but back and forth childish angst between these two. Once again she plays Chase for a sucker. He is just too much of a perfect gentleman and all around sweet guy. The scene where Dani gets pissed and jealous when Chase leaves homecoming for a little bit to bring his original date Lacey who is sick her winning crown and items showed Dani's true colors. I will not continue with the next book.

Chase & Dani (Book 2)

It's been two years since That Summer . The summer in the Ozarks. The summer that Chase and Dani stopped being just best friends who kiss. The summer that Chase became Dani's everything. The summer that Dani and Chase stopped being friends.

Dani is off to college and Chase is a senior in High School. She's settling in at school and rushing sororities. He's leading the football team to the state championship and choosing colleges. They are both trying to move on but their lives are intertwined because of their families and the connection that has always been between them is still there.

The push and pull between Chase and Dani is magnetic but for me, the highlight of this book is the other relationships. The friendship between the four Mackenzie-Diamond teens (Chase, Damon, Dani, and Haley). The friends-forever bond that still exists between Jayden, Phillip, and Danny. The forever-love between Phillip and Jayden. The true-love between Danny and Jennifer. The changes in Lori's relationship with Dani (and with Danny, Jennifer, Jayden). The way Jayden is so supportive of and motherly towards Dani. Phillip and Danny celebrating Chase's 18th. The grandparents, who have been friends and neighbors for more than 30 years.

Jillian always writes amazing friendships and with three generations of friendship, this family - and I do think of them as being one big family - is so inspiring. I want to move in next door!

Dani and Chase are my favorite couple of the series and this book (along with Book 6) is going back on my TBR list to be re-read sometime soon.

Note: This is book 7 in a series and there are enough recaps that you can start with Book 6 and just read Chase and Dani's story (Books 6-8). However, my attachment to the other relationships is based on reading the other books first so personally, I recommend reading all of the books in order.
This book doesn't have a cliffhanger so you don't have to wait for Book 8 to come out to read it.

Book 8 (That Forever), coming Summer 2022, continues with Chase and Dani's story.
Book 9, coming Summer 2023 is Damon's story.
...and the books will keep coming every summer!

After a TRAGIC ending to their budding romantic relationship after a lifetime of friendship, Dani and Chase continue to be in love with each other, yet too emotionally scared by the other to mend their fractured relationship. Not able to be apart from each other another minute, they decide to be in the weird limbo of friends with benefits, which is always a bad idea...or is it? This entire book is a coming of age from a friendship to a romantic relationship, overcoming past hurts and lost dreams and praying that you can find your way back to one another in some capacity. After a bit of soul searching on both parts, the pair fights in their own way to repair their relationship. This is a story of friendship, love, family, futures. It's dreams and goals and plans that you make with your best friend and don't know how life will turn out when your friendship comes to an abrupt ending. It's just plain IMPOSSIBLE to not devour this book! I just HAD. To. Know! My heart has been revived! This continuation of Dani and Chase's story was EVERYTHING!

I think this is my favourite book in the series so far! (I know, I think that every time a new book is released.) But for real this time!!!
This book begins with Devaney getting ready to head to college and Chase in his Senior year of high school, trying to decide which college would be the right choice for him to sign with. They still haven’t talked much since That Summer, and are both miserable for it.
Throughout this book, Chase and Dani are trying work out their problems and put aside their differences so they can hopefully get back to being friends again. But it’s hard with the distance between them and the past still influencing and affecting them so strongly.
This book was almost stressful to read, because you just want so badly for things to work out for them and for them to just be together already! It was definitely an emotional read, never knowing what to expect with these two stubborn teenagers, but it was also a fun read that had me smiling and laughing along.
I truly enjoyed every single second of this book and I’m so incredibly excited for the next book so we can continue this crazy adventure with them!

I had so many different feelings about this book....
First off, Chase is so dreamy. Such a loyal, sweet, amazing guy with integrity in spades. He is a model for all the other book boyfriends out there to aspire to.
And as much as I love him.... He and Dani drove me absolutely bonkers. At certain times they could be so grown up and other times act like such children. BUT, I have my own teenager so I get it and it makes so much sense. I wanted to throw my kindle a couple times. Certain parts were like knowing that a wreck is going to happen but you can do nothing to stop it from happening.
This story revealed some real surprises and growth of the other characters we've come to love and dislike. All of their personalities continue to shine and become so distinct. And as usual, Jillian paints such a thorough picture of that world that it just plays in my head like a movie every time. I was really happy where this one ends and can't wait to see what happens next.

You guys.. this series! It is truly one of a kind! Something that reels you in && keeps you along for the ride. Jillian writes is a book for this series once a year, and every year I devour it in a day.

Chase && Devaney left us in our feels at the end of That Summer && I’m not gonna lie, I was scared to start this one. But it was so worth it! I loved getting to go through rush week with Dani && getting to experience Chase’s senior year. The reconnection these too make is everything I wanted and needed!! Were they still stubborn? Yes. Were there still some bumps along the way? Absolutely! But I really just can’t get over how perfect this book was.

I also need to throw some appreciation for the rest of this family! Both sets of parents, Damon, Haley, they all played important parts in making this book what it was. Honestly couldn’t ask for better characters!

If you haven’t started this series, please do so! I will rave about these books for forever!!

I had a feeling this book was going to wreck me and I was right. So many emotions, mostly anger, sadness and excitement. I don’t know how Jillian Dodd does it but every time I read her books, I get more emotionally invested than with any other book I read. This is Dani & Chase’s 2nd book, but the 7th book in the series. The 1st book ends with Dani & Chase no longer together and no longer friends, and this book picks up 2 years later with Dani going off to college. This book has many ups and downs with Dani and Chase’s relationship, some moments they are together, some they aren’t and they have to figure out how to get their friendship back through all that. “He looks sexy. Freaking four-alarm, code red sexy.” Dani and Chase are great together but they both have some growing to do before getting into a relationship because despite all the heartache Dani is his real life perfect pass. And I want to mention Lori. Wow, I never saw that coming!

Wow! I love this series so much. Chase and Dani’s story is a series of ups and downs. That Promise gave me so many emotions. There were laughs and smiles while reading but also angst and sadness. Both Chase and Dani have done some growing up but has it been enough to finally come together? I liked getting to know a new character Pace, who is on the football team with Chase and Damon. Another character revealed more in this story was Lacey. This entire series focuses on the friendships between the characters. This book showed more of the friendship between Chase, Damon, Dani, and Haley. I love Damon’s fun, energetic personality. Haley’s so artistic and seems to tell it like it is. Dani is still trying to find herself starting out at college and meeting new people. Chase is still the kind and caring boy who protects those he loves. I’m excited to see what happens in the next book for Chase and Dani and how their story will end.
