OH-KAY. Yes. This was spooky.
This story comes from a friend of a friend of a friend who knows someone's third cousin who has heard alllll about the haunted house that used to be occupied by Justice Harbottle from their brother-in-law.
I know I'm not the only one who loves this type of wacky storytelling.
Justice Harbottle is a smarmy judge who uses his power and influence to get innocent men and women sent to the gallows.
The case that finally does him in is the husband of Harbottle's housekeeper, who he has brought up on trumped-up forgery charges and then sentenced to death, so he can keep sleeping with her.
A little while later his ghost and all of Harbottle's old victims return and hold their own Night Court to pass judgment on him. The sentence?
Death.
They even give him an execution date.
Ooooooooooh!
How's this gonna go down?! <--I wondered
Ok, fair warning, there was a little weird thing at the beginning where Harbottle and this supposed informant have a meeting, and it honestly doesn't do anything for the ghost story. I don't know why Le Fanu even put it in there unless he was getting paid by the word.
BUT.
The rest of this short was pretty great, and the narrator did a fabulous job. I listened to this as part of the collection In a Glass Darkly.
Recommended.

"في ذات النهار بعد مغادرة الرجل تذكرت حادثاً مُشابهاً لذلك الحدث الذي رواه لي، واحداً من تلك الحوادث التي تمر بالمرء فيظنها فردية، ثم ينتبه، بعد مرورها بسنوات، أن الكون لا يصنع شيئاً فرادى، وأن الصدفة مُجرد مصطلح لا نتفوه به إلا لطمأنة أنفسنا أن الكون لا يُراقبنا، أننا لسنا مرئيين في تلك الشبكة الواسعة من الوجود."
رواية "قاضي الموتى" هي تجربتي الثانية مع "جوزيف شيريدان" صاحب رائعة "كاهن الجان"، والتي نالت إعجابي وذلك لفترة لا بأس بها تنال أغلب ترشيحاتي للأصدقاء، في أدب الرعب خصوصاً.
وهذه كانت مشكلتي مع هذه الرواية، أنه حسناً، رواية جيدة، ولكنها لم تصل لمستوى "كاهن الجان"، مشوقة، قصيرة، خاطفة، وتحمل العديد من مشاهد الرعب والإثارة الجيدين، حتى بالنسبة لوقتها، فلا تزال قادرة على جعلك مآخوذاً بالأجواء الماورائية، وكالعادة تتساؤل بعد النهاية.
إن لم تُخني ذاكرتي، فنهاية "كاهن الجان"، حملت نهاية واضحة، وضبابية بعض الشيء، مثل هذه الرواية أيضاً، نهاية تشعر أنها واضحة، ولكن هُناك ضبابية تُغلف بعض الأشياء، مصير شخصية مثلاً، أو كُنه الشيء الماورائي.
وبعيداً عن المقارنة مع "كاهن الجان"، فهذه الرواية حملت في أحداثها واحد من أكثر الشخصيات التي ستكرهها بمُجرد بداية الحديث عنه فقط، وهو طبعاً القاضي "هاربوتل"، فذلك القاضي غير العادل، لا يُمثل مهنته في أي شيء، قاسي، ودموي، وشيطاني، عنصري للغاية، ويرى الجميع أدنى منه، شعاره في الحياة هو:
"اشفق على المسمار وأنت تطرقه، فسينحني. وفوقه سيسقط الجدار كله."
فلك أنت تتخيل بأي قسوة يحكم قضاياه، بل ولأي مدى وصلت جسارته وعنصريته في سحق الذين حُكم عليه في القضايا التي يقوم بحكمها، فمن الذي سيكون قادر على مواجهة شيطان قاسي مُتبلد المشاعر غير الموتى؟
رواية قصيرة، ذات أجواء مُقبضة ودموية، وتصلح ليالي الشتاء بالطبع، يُنصح بها.

رواية كلاسيكية بامتياز والترجمة رشيقة ومتقنة ... هي رواية قصيرة مرعبة من ناحية القدرة على الإرعاب بالماورائيات ولكنها مرعبة من الناحية الإجتماعية أيضا إذا فكرنا في كمية الظلم واستخدام النفوذ وقدرات القضاة الفاسدين وبطشهم في هذه الحقبة من الزمن

الرواية من فئة الرعب الكلاسيكي، دمجت بين رعب الماورائيات والرعب من جبروت السلطة.
هاربوتل قاضي فاسد عنصري لا يرضيه إلا الدم وحكم الإعدام فهو يرى أن كل من حوله حشرات يستحقون السحق لذا لُقٍّب بشيطان الدم في لندن.
" الخوف كان الرادع الوحيد الذي منع الطرقات من التحول إلى غابة، والخوف لا يأتي بالتهديد لا، تلك - كانت طريقة الضعفاء – الخوف يأتي بالتنفيذ. بحكم رادع على رجل سرق، بحكم تعسفي ضد رجل خدع، وبالقتل علنا لقاتل أو عقل وراء محاولة قتل. تلك كانت الطريقة الوحيدة لتحويل الوعي الجماعي للشعب من الغليان، إلى السير منتظمين جوار الجدران، والتماس الأمان في الظلال. “
لَعِب القاضي على غريزة الخوف عند عامة الشعب واستغلها لبسط نفوذه وإحاطته بهالة من الرعب، نجح الكاتب في جعلي أمقت هذا القاضي من أول الرواية، وتداخلت تخيلاتي مع أفلام هذه الفترة وتقديمها لشخصية القاضي الظالم الجاهل الشهواني.
يقع القاضي في شر أعماله ويشرب من نفس الكأس المر الذي أذاق منه ضحاياه، فيمثل أمام محكمة الموت العليا لمحاسبته على كل ما اقترفه من ظلم وفساد.
في المجمل الرواية جميلة ومشوقة والترجمة سلسة وجذابة.

الروايه مش مرعبه قد ما هي غامضه، أحداث الروايه بتبداء بشكل مرعب بس تقليديه وفضلت الاحداث تقليديه بس مثيره مش ممله لغايه اما بداء القاضي يدخل في الصوره ،بدأت الروايه تاخد منحنه تاني اكتر غموض وتشويق ورعب،معجبتيش في الروايه النهايه بتاعتها حسيت ان في ��جزاء كتير في القصه عايزه تكمل.

رائعة ومثيرة ومخيفة وفخمة ، لم اقرأ رواية رعب بهذا الثقل منذ زمن حتى عزفت عن هذا النوع من الروايات لكن جاء من يعيدني إلى هذا المسار الذي بدأت به أولى قراءاتي في الرواية قبل عشر سنوات .. الحمد لله أنّ هناك من ينعش شغفك بين الحين والحين

Once upon a time there was a manor. A manor no one wanted to live it. It had been built by Roger Harbottle, a Turkey merchant, a really long time ago. It was a dark red brick house that sat back from the street a few feet from the other houses. It had broad steps, a great room with broad steps, dark paneling, and a large fire-place. It was the last home of Mr. Justice Harbottle. Mr. Harbottle comes to us from "Mr. Justice Harbottle" a classic horror novella written by J. Sheridan Le Fanu, first published in 1872. And in the story we will follow the life, and perhaps the death, of Mr. Justice Harbottle. Here is a description of our judge:
The Judge was at that time a man of some sixty-seven years. He had a great mulberry-coloured face, a big, carbuncled nose, fierce eyes, and a grim and brutal mouth. My father, who was young at the time, thought it the most formidable face he had ever seen; for there were evidences of intellectual power in the formation and lines of the forehead. His voice was loud and harsh, and gave effect to the sarcasm which was his habitual weapon on the bench.
This old gentleman had the reputation of being about the wickedest man in England. Even on the bench he now and then showed his scorn of opinion. He had carried cases his own way, it was said, in spite of counsel, authorities, and even of juries, by a sort of cajolery, violence, and bamboozling, that somehow confused and overpowered resistance. He had never actually committed himself; he was too cunning to do that. He had the character of being, however, a dangerous and unscrupulous judge; but his character did not trouble him. The associates he chose for his hours of relaxation cared as little as he did about it.
When the story begins the Judge is walking home one night and he is approached by an old man with a crutch-handled cane, bended over, shuffling and tottering in his walking. He stops the Judge and tells him he has something to tell him that no one else can hear, so the Judge brings him to his house. The old man says there is a man in prison and a secret tribunal is in process, the object would be to take cognizance of the conduct of judges beginning with Judge Harbottle. He tells the Judge he will come the next day when he has more information. But our old man never returns and our Judge sentences the prisoner to death, probably to show how unafraid he was, and then he receives this letter:
MR. JUSTICE HARBOTTLE,—MY LORD,
I am ordered by the High Court of Appeal to acquaint your lordship, in order to your better preparing yourself for your trial, that a true bill hath been sent down, and the indictment lieth against your lordship for the murder of one Lewis Pyneweck of Shrewsbury, citizen, wrongfully executed for the forgery of a bill of exchange, on the ——the day of —— last, by reason of the wilful perversion of the evidence, and the undue pressure put upon the jury, together with the illegal admission of evidence by your lordship, well knowing the same to be illegal, by all which the promoter of the prosecution of the said indictment, before the High Court of Appeal, hath lost his life.
And the trial of the said indictment, I am farther ordered to acquaint your lordship, is fixed for the both day of —— next ensuing, by the right honourable the Lord Chief Justice Twofold, of the court aforesaid, to wit, the High Court of Appeal, on which day it will most certainly take place. رواية "قاضي الموتى" كانت تجربة غير متوقعة بالنسبة لي. لم أبدأ بقراءتها بأي توقعات ولم أكن أعلم أنها تصنف كرواية رعب. ولكن بعد الانتهاء منها، أشعر برغبة عارمة لقراءة المزيد من أعمال الكاتب.
الرواية على الرغم من عدم وضوحها في مواضع كثيرة، إلا أنها دسمة وممتعة بطريقة رشيقة. أحببت الغموض والتفاصيل الغنية التي تجعل القارئ يتعمق في القصة ويشعر بأجواء الرعب والدراما. بشكل عام، أجد هذه الرواية لطيفة وشيقة، وأوصي بقراءتها لمن يبحث عن تجربة قراءة فريدة، مثيرة، وقصي��ك في الوقت ذاته.

Green Tea was ok, but fell a little flat. The monkey was not scary. Justice Harbottle was a better story - the main character was a horrible person and the narrative a bit disjointed at times, but I enjoyed his descent into madness, the idea he was being haunted, and that karma got him in the end.

I think out of the three stories that we've read the past two weeks I think this one was probably my least favorite but I did like it more during the end when Harbottle was actually being tried in court. It was fun to discuss in class and read different things from Le Fanu.

This is a very quick read. It's no Green Tea or Uncle Silas, but it's a nicely creepy tale of ghosts and justice.
