I love a good book. This is not one

When I read fiction, I do not expect any type of reality. That way, I’m not disappointed when the characters act in a way contrary to what anyone in real life would do. However, the flaws in this book are too numerous to not talk about them.

Nina Veil woke from a two YEAR coma and was able to speak. Within three WEEKS, she was up and walking (with a walker). She has a spotty memory, but, realizes the person jailed for the crime she was investigating before she went into a coma two years ago was wrongfully convicted. The new murder isn’t a copycat, it’s the real killer. The serial killer was still out there and killing again. (Why is it always a serial killer?) Oh, the “serial” killer she was after before her coma? He only killed one person.

I had to finish the story just because it was so full of crap that I needed to know how it was tied up. How? She beats the killer with her walker, yes WALKER, and knocks him out. The guy hasn’t killed in the two years that she was in a coma, but he starts again when she wakes up? And she checks herself out of the hospital early to join her old partner in the investigation. She uses her walker to get around at the crime scene.

I can suspend reality easily when reading. Reading is, for me, an escape from reality and I don’t want it to be possible or plausible. However, this book, this character is sooooo far out there, that it is utterly ridiculous.

Finally, it is obvious that the writer is from the UK. Americans do not say “cheeky.” Americans do not say “premises,” as in “leave my premises now!” We say, “get the @#$ outta my house. NOW!” There are so many “tells” in this book that the writer has done not one single bit of research before putting this sorry piece of garbage together.

I don’t believe there is actually any author called “Kate Bold.” I think that’s a pseudonym for a group of “writers” that just throw words into a file and hit the self-publish button. If you read the “author’s” biography, it just goes on about the myriad numbers of books that have been “written” by her. Oh, yeah. She’s got ELEVEN different series going on and has “written” more than 50 books. Since 2021. She “wrote” 21 books that were published/released in 2022. Wow! That’s a lot of words…

Two years ago, while attempting to take down a murder suspect, Nina Veil was left horribly injured. Awakening from her coma, Nina fills in enough of the pieces of her scattered memory to realise that although her FBI team has incarcerated a man, the real killer is still loose and still active.

As the introductory novel to a new series, this story delivered well on all accounts. Enough time was devoted to characterisation to bring the players to life without slowing down the suspense and action. Since this book focused more on the personalities than the crimes, it is not as gritty as a typical thriller and, to me, this worked in its favour.

I'm looking forward to reading more in this absorbing series.

Kate Bold writes great FBI Suspense novels and Away From Here, A Nina Veil FBI Suspense Thriller Book 1, is equally well written, engrossing, suspenseful & an enjoyable read!

Nina Veil is an FBI agent who awakens from a two year coma she went into after falling from scaffolding that was a trap set specifically for her by the killer Nina & her partner were trying to catch at the time of Nina's fall and subsequent coma. While she was in her coma, another criminal was arrested & convicted for the crime Nina & her partner Daniel had been investigating. But Nina knows the convicted criminal is the wrong criminal for the case Daniel & she had been working before her coma. The real killer has just struck again, first time in two years, after realizing Nina has no memory of him. Not only has the killer struck again, he has ramped up his killings to one a day. Daniel and Nina convince their FBI boss, Kevin, to let Nina help Daniel work the case, even though Nina is really not in a physically strong condition.

Away From Here is Kate Bold at her strongest. From page one, Nina's handicap is her coma recovery, not another lame "missing/dead sister" trope. This alone is so refreshing! Nina does has a recalled memory of her finding her father murdered which is why Nina joined the FBI. However, in this book, it happens near the book's conclusion. Plus, it's only a memory she recalls and is not a constant recurring thread yet. (As I haven't read the remaining books in this series yet, I can't say if this trope is present in those books. But just the fact it's her dad, not her sister, is still a relief and a nice change.)

This story also opens up future conflict between Daniel and Nina as she starts to feel their relationship may have been more than partners but Nina can't remember and Daniel isn't offering up the information.

Ms. Bold writes strong characters with just enough flaws to make them more relatable. Nina Veil was someone I was able to root for because she was introduced to the reader in a unique way having awakened from her coma. I definitely look forward to reading more about Nina Veil. I hope the memory aftereffects of her coma continue to surface in the rest of the Nina Veil books and was not a "one and done" deal to introduce Nina. Recovering from a coma adds a different depth to Nina.

There were so many issues with this book. The concept was good, but it wasn’t executed well. Right from the start when Nina wakes up another character asks, “You came out of the coma?” Like girl. Are you dumb, do you have eyes, can you not see you are literally having a conversation? Nina wakes up from a TWO YEAR COMA and then immediately goes back to work and the only thing wrong with her is she is kinda sore. Simply not possible. And then there is the fact that the writer clearly did not research a single thing and everything they knew about psychopaths came from tv and movies. Someone would describe the most basic psychopathic character trait, like an unhappy childhood, and Nina would go “That’s it. That’s our guy.” Hello? That could be anyone. Cherry on top of this shit sundae was I listened to this as an audiobook and it was narrated using a synthesized voice. It just gave uncanny valley which was not helped by the fact that this was a book about catching a serial killer.

Action packed search for a killer with a twist. FBI Agent Nina Veil just woke from a two year long coma to find out that the man who pushed her off a building is back killing. Poor Nina is just days awake when she insists on joining in the hunt before he kills again. Nina is still having memory problems and is using a walker to get around but this plucky brilliant woman perseveres and aids in saving her partner who got hurt in the final battle with the determined killer. Flashes of memory are slowly coming back to Nina and she’s gradually remembering her old life.great start to this new series!

I really enjoyed reading Away From Here. Nina Veil is a different character from those we commonly read about, she is a former FBI agent who was in a coma for two years and although still very much under the weather to perform an agent's duties she insists and goes on the search for the man who is killing women and who has put her in a hospital bed for two years. The story is full of action, it has a good plot, and highlights the importance of persevering and expanding one's limits.
I thank Ms. Bold for this ARC.

Nina in a coma for two years. Why?

Nina and Daniel were in a warehouse chasing a suspected killer. He crept behind Nina and pushed her. Two years later she awoke from the coma. She worked hard to get released from the hospital and left using a walker. Nina, a FBI agent, talked her way into catching a killer that was using the same method as the other killer that had pushed her. The book moves quickly with a murder every day. I like Daniel and Nina, two excellent agents. Looking forward to reading her next book.

Are you strong enough?

FBI agent Nina Veil has just woke up from a coma. She is still trying to come piece everything together as she has missed two years. She has been asked to help catch a killer that has been silent. But will she be able to gain the strength that she needs? A great read

Away from Here

This book was complete with mystery and was intriguing as well as it captured my undivided attention. The characters were very well developed except for the killer even though the author did provide some of his history . I thoroughly enjoyed the book as it was well written and a very good story. I look forward to reading more of Kate Bold books.

A fun quick read

I enjoyed the story and the plot was good. Simple writing in a time forward (no flashbacks) to confuse the story line. I will definitely read more from this author.

Average to dull crime thriller. It fits neatly into the checked boxes of meeting the needed ingredients. There are no real climatic points in the story or any twists.

It was a free, fast, easy read between other books. Depending on what you're looking for, this may be an okay filler.

Full of twists and turns!

Fast paced. Full of twists and turns. Keeps you guessing page after page! Not sure that person in a coma for two years would make such a remarkable physical recovery in such a short time, but otherwise storyline was very believable.

Not sure how an FBI agent that’s been in a coma for two years can be hunting down a killer while stumbling around with a walker‽ Far fetched in my opinion, which is what I’ve often found with Kate Bold books.

Felt very formulaic and sometimes predictable. I understand this author has written many books but the writing left a lot to be desired.

Nina and Daniel complimented each other in their work ethic. It was almost as if they could read the others mind and know exactly what to expect.
