Dagon-1 also known as Basic Education High School No.1,Dagon, is the best known school among Myanmar Public Schools.

History

Dagon-1 is established as Methodist Episcopat Girls School at first in Lewis Street(Now Seik Kan Thar Street) in 1882. In 1894, the school moved to the current campus and renamed the school name as Methodist English Girls High School. The current campus is on the corner of Lancaster Road ( Now Nawadday Road) and Signal Pagoda Road. Then, the three storyed main building was built. It is 213 feet long and 145 feet wide having 56 rooms, big Victorian-era style building. Boys are accepted only in elementry level(from KG to grade-3). During the prewar period of World War 2, boys are accepted from KG to grade-4. Just before the World War 2, the school has 55 students in total. Then the school had to closed for 6 years because of World War 2 and reopened in May, 1947. The principal, Mrs.Logie repaired the school buildings that were destroyed during the war. At that time,the school taught the students not only for matric exam but also for GCE (General Certificate of Education) exam from, London University.

In 1951, the number of students increased to 850. In 1952, four storyed KG building (113'×51')having 15 rooms was built. And the school's name is known as Methodist English High School (MEHS). In 14th April,1965, the school became the public school operated by the government. In 1986, the new three storyed building (90'×34') was built. It has 6 rooms. The newest five storyed building (130'×30') was built in 1998 having 20 classrooms. Nowaday, the school is run under the Department of Basic Education which is controlled by Ministry of Education.

Achievements And Success Of The School

1954-55 academic year, the school stood first and became top in the country. In 1956, the school has total students of 2,500. From 1968-69 to 1987-88, the school produced 18 students who are very outstanding in Math,Science and in other educational fields. In 1983, 1994 and 1995, the school was awarded the best school award, for having the highest passing rate in matriculation examination. Nowaday, the school produces the students who rank from 1st to 10th position in the whole country and winners in national competitions such as Myanmar Math Olympic competition, art, etc. No. 1 Basic Education High School, Dagon achieved 89.79% passing rate in 2005 matriculation Examination, including 33 six distinction winners with the 7 outstanding students who stood 1st, in the whole country. In 2006, there are 61 six distinction winners.


Daily Routine For A Student

The classes from KG to grade-11 of No.1 B.E.H.S Dagon have morning and afternoon sessions. The morning classes are for grade 6 to grade 11 students which is from 7:00 AM to 12:00PM. The afternoon classes starts at 12:00PM and ends in 4:30PM for KG to grade-5 students. There are altogether 6327 students (As of 2007-2008 academic year) attending at the school. Only the students who obey the school’s rules and regulations are only allowed to continue their education in this school. When the students arrive at the school, firstly, they have to stand in line in the assembly hall and go to respective classes with the supervision of responsible teachers.When they arrive at their classrooms, the students led by the teachers salute the state flag and sing the national anthem in unison. The No.1 B.E.H.S Dagon teaches not only school subjects to her students, but other education development works that will assist them in their lives. Development tasks are being carried out based on the facts such as physique, intelligence, character, vocation and all round education. All subjects are taught and there are computer multimedia, science and language labs to assist the students.

In the computer lab, the students are taught from the basic until they become skillful in computer.

In the multimedia lab, there are morning and evening sections. Typing, Paint, Microsoft word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft power point, Basic Internet, Basic-e mail and knowledge from educational CDs are being taught to the students in this lab.

In the science lab, the teachers teach practical in Biology, Physics and Chemistry such as measuring of sonometer and refractive index, weighing of Archimedes’ principle and the balancing of plummets and weights.

At the time for sports and physical exercise, students are trained in football and basket-ball in order to emerge school selected football and basket ball players. They are systematically nurtured and let them to participate in the township level football competition. There's also football competition every rainy season.

Other Developments

Security For school security, Close Circuit Television (CCTV) is installed at all the entrances of the school, along corridors and the basket ball grounds which is the assembly area of the students. By doing so, all the activities of the students can be monitored from the Principal’s office.At the end of school time, parents who fetch their children are asked to identify themselves with identity cards around their necks. The school is facing to the Signal Pagoda Road, which is one of the main the way to the downtown. So, there are so many traffic jams in front of the school every single day at the school time and release time. Therefore, the overhead bridge crossing the Signal Pagoda Road was built in 2006 to clear the traffic jams and for the safty of the students. The bridge was built with the money donated by the principal, teachers, students and other generous donators. It is worth 32,228,679 kyats.

Arts and Culture Moreover, teachers are hired to teach Myanmar basic dance routine to the students, and the outstanding student dancers are sent to take part in Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions held by the State, annually.Students, who interest in singing, entertain the guests with Myanmar Songs and National Races Songs.

As a part of their development programme in No.1 B.E.H.S Dagon, students practice in the band troupe and play in the orchestra. Orchestra is composed of skillful and musical inclined students. The band troupe of No.1 B.E.H.S Dagon has demonstrated their skills at the state level ceremonies. In 2003-2004 academic year, the school hosted a Music Festival in November for 2 days. Almost all the students and the students from other schools attended and enjoyed the festival.

Health Concerning health of the students, the foot stalls are urged to provide students with foods that are fresh and hygienic. So, the students may gain nourishment by eating them. Electronic fly traps are installed at the food stalls. Thus, at lunch break or tea break, students can buy and eat clean and fresh snacks which will not effect on their health.

In addition to the teaching sector, Buddhist Partitas Reciting Association is formed at this school. This association separated into boys and girls Partitas Reciting (Wut) Association. The aims of forming Wut Associations are to make the students polite and obedient persons and to become devoted Buddhists. The shrine room is located on the ground floor of the main building.

School Health Team This team works for the school's health. The members of this team has duties to check the foods that are sold in the canteen whether they are hygenic or not, to check the trash bins to be always clean and to check the classroooms to be always clean. The rest rooms of the school are renovated. The hand dryers are installed in them. The rest rooms are checked by the health team member students everyday to make sure they are always cleaing. The school also has a school clinic. Therefore, the school is awarded the Yangon division school health first prize 3 times consecutively and awarded again in 2006.Moreover the mayor of Yangon city awared the special award for getting the mayor award 5 consecutive years.

Computer Team This team is responsible to teach all the students to know the basis of computer and trains the students who are interested in computer to be profficient. The selective students are send to the national ceremonies to demonstrate their profficiency. The Computer Hall was opened in 1996.

Art Team The team trains the students who are interested in Art. There have been many successful students awarded from locally and internationally every year. In middle school level(from grade4 to grade7), the art classes are offered.

Many outstanding students have been emerged because of the good training of teachers under the guidance of the principal.Moreover,it takes the highest in the overall rank in Burmese's High Schools, as well as a first in relative subjects in each High School exam by the Examination Board.

"I had been assigning to this school since 1996. I can manage to maintain the good reputation of this school with the help of teachers and staff of this school. So, we got 89.79% passing rate in this year matriculation examination. There are 33 six distinction winners, 56-five distinction winners, 60 four distinction winners, 84 two distinction winners and 115 one distinction winners, and prizes presentation ceremony to these students will be held soon. I’m sure that top ten students of the whole country will also emerge from this school. This school is one of the best schools in Myanmar. This is because of the earnest efforts made by the students, and good teaching of the teachers as well as the assistances gives by the parents. So, I would like to express my gratitude to those students, teachers and parents for this achievement."
