Jesse Quick is a speedster member of both the Flash Family and the Justice Society of America. She is the daughter of the World War II era hero Johnny Quick.
History
Flash Family
Jesse Quick was erased from the timeline by Flashpoint and trapped in the Speed Force, with her father having died shortly before the Flashpoint.[1] She was temporarily restored when Dr. Manhattan undid his work. As a result she returned as Liberty Belle, part of the Justice Society of America.[2] Manhattan's attempt at fixing the timeline and reality failed however, as they merely re-adjusted into a new version.[3][4][5]
She was also part of the timeline of the older Barry Allen from the 25th century, having become a legendary speedster who had a statue in the Flash Museum.[6] Jesse met Barry of the 21st Century for the first time inside the Speed Force, when his body was taken over by Eobard Thawne. As a result of his guilt, he however saw them as nightmarish creatures. She and Max Mercury saved Barry from being lost in the Speed Force, which caused him to finally remember them.[7]
Jesse and Max then helped Barry to escape back to his universe by self-reflecting on his thoughts. He however decided to help the two escape too and finally become a part of their timeline. After they escaped the Speed Force, Thawne realized he and his Legion of Zoom won't be able to stand against the reunited Flash Family. He soon shocked them by bringing in even more members he had recruited across various realities to fight them.[8]
Dark Crisis
Barry Allen disappeared while on a mission with Justice League Incarnate. Mister Terrific was able to track him through the Speed Force and found three alternate realities where he might be. The Flash Family gathered at the Flash Museum to go into the Force and hopefully find Barry and bring him home. The West twins ran through the portal into the Speed Force before anyone could stop them and Jay Garrick jumped in after them. The remaining speedsters split into two teams to rescue both Barry and Jay and the kids. Jesse and Max Mercury went through the portal and emerged in a desert world where they found an alternate Barry Allen being chased by raiders.[9]
The two then helped the alternate Barry restore life and hope to his world.[10] Jesse later reunited with Rick Tyler when the remaining heroes were assigned split up with the Flash Family to contain the waves of supervillain attacks.[11]
One-Minute War
While fighting Lion-Mane with Rick, Jesse suddenly realized that everyone around her froze at the same time a spire began to fall from the sky. This was the arrival of the Fraction, an interdimensional empire that used the Speed Force to plunder various worlds.[12] Jesse hid Rick in an apartment before going to the Flash Family, who were the only ones that were still moving, and warned them that she recognized the spire from the alternate world she and Max visited during the last Crisis.[13] Realizing that the West home would not be a safe refuge for long, the speedsters relocate to Mister Terrific's personal lab at Terrifictech before Kid Flash and Impulse returned with a stolen vehicle from the Fraction, which contained various other heroes that were kept as prisoners.[14]
Jesse comforted Irey, who was worried for her brother Jai, who froze in a similar way to everyone else after the Fraction arrived. Jesse and Irey then briefly fought some Fraction soldiers while the others installed a battery from the stolen vehicle in a car to use as a bomb, hoping to destroy the Fraction's spire with it. After leaving Irey behind to guard the frozen heroes, which included Rick, the Flash Family launched an assault on the spire, with her and Linda opening a breach in the wall so that Wally could get inside with his car.[15]
Powers and Abilities
Powers
- Speed Force Conduit: Jesse uses the Speed Formula 3X2(9YZ)4A to access the Speed Force, a mysterious cosmic force that pushes time and space itself forward. As a conduit of the Speed Force, all aspects of Jesse's physiology are accelerated and enhanced.
- Superhuman Speed: Jesse is capable of moving at incredible superhuman speeds. She is fast enough to run up vertical surfaces[10] and on water. Jesse may be as fast as Supergirl.[16]
- Superhuman Reflexes: Jesse's reflexes are heightened immeasurably, allowing her to dodge or react faster than normal.[17]
- Superhuman Stamina: The Speed Force grants Jesse a great increase in stamina, allowing her to fight or run much longer than the average person. Although a great increase, it is not unlimited.
- Superhuman Agility: Jesse's agility, balance, and bodily coordination are enhanced to superhuman levels. This allows her to easily maneuver while moving at superhuman speed.[17]
- Speed Force Aura: The Speed Force manifests an aura around Jesse and whatever she is carrying, protecting her from adverse effects of her speed, such as friction with the air.
- Superhuman Durability: The Speed Force Aura also protects Jesse from kinetic impacts, which in turn, makes her much more durable and resistant to injury than any normal human. She fell from a considerable height without injury.[10]
- Electrokinesis: As a conduit of the Speed Force, Jesse's body generates large amounts of the electrical energy that she draws from the Speed Force. This Speed Force lightning emanates off of her, especially when moving at superhuman speed. She is able to use the lightning offensively by shocking people with a touch.[18]
- Superhuman Strength: Jesse possesses a degree of super-strength. She is able to flip a tank with her bare hands.[13]
- Super-Leaping: Jesse can use her strength and the momentum she gains while running to leap great distances.[17]
- Vortex Creations: Jesse is able to create vortices of air by running in circles or rotating her extremities at super-speed. These vortices can be used for a number of effects.[18]
Notes
- Jesse Chambers was created by Len Strazewski and Mike Parobeck, first appearing in Justice Society of America (Volume 2) #1. However, in the Prime Earth continuity, Jesse Chambers first appeared as part of the New 52 DC Universe in Supergirl: The Fastest Women Alive by Stuart Moore and Paco Diaz.
- Jesse's first appearance after Flashpoint, Supergirl: The Fastest Women Alive (2017), was a promotional comic that is not necessarily canon with Prime Earth. She made several small and conflicting appearances after that; her first appearance in a proper title was as a statue in The Flash (Volume 5) #26, then as a possible future Flash Family member in The Flash (Volume 5) #75, in a flashback in The Flash/Speed Buggy Special #1, and as Liberty Belle with the rest of the JSA in Doomsday Clock #12. Her proper intruduction as a character - as Jesse Quick again - was in The Flash #758.
