Jason Todd became Robin after Dick Grayson left. After being killed by the Joker and mysteriously returning to life he takes on the Joker's former alias, becoming the second Red Hood
History
Jason Todd was a teenage street criminal until Batman caught him attempting to steal tires from the Batmobile. In need of a partner after his falling out with Dick Grayson, the original Robin, Batman trained Todd to take up the mantle. Unbeknownst to Batman, however, Jason Todd is a sadist who revels in inflicting violence onto others.[1].
However this was due to emotional instability and lack of self-control from his upbringing. He begins to better himself when joining the reformed titans, but following a confrontation with Deathstroke that nearly costs him his life and the revelation that his daughter Rose Wilson, his new love interest is secretly a spy for her father. The trauma and betrayal becomes too much for Jason and he returns to Gotham and works with Bruce (while also discreetly manufacturing and using an unknown drug) until Jason goes in unprepared and is beaten to death by the Joker. However Jason returns to life under mysterious circumstances and takes his killer's former alias Red Hood, and quickly takes control of the criminal underworld in Gotham after Batman kills the Joker and leaves Gotham. Jason goes against his former friends and even gets Hank Hall (Hawk) killed. However it's later revealed that Crane manipulated him into taking a drug that Jason used to eliminate his fear, but made him susceptible to Crane's manipulations. Upon getting clean Jason feels remorse for his actions and seeks redemption.
