Synopsis for "Gift of Fear"

Hidden in his bunker at Tucson, Sinestro broadcast a message to the people of Earth, berating them for their complacency and greed. For that, he will expose them to fear and, thus, he uses the drones he stole from Ferris Aircraft to destroy a city.

At Ferris Air, Carol gets informed of the devastation caused by her drones. Only one destoyed Hub City and three more are heading towards population centers. The military has already deployed pilots to intercept the drones, but Carol says that no live pilot has beaten a drone in a combat scenario. Luckily, Hal is more than up for the task. He activates his ring and catches up to one drone already fighting a manned fighter above Las Vegas. Although Hal fails to save the pilot, he destroys the drone before it can do any more damage.

Sinestro, aware that Hal has caught up to what he is doing, tells his henchmen to cloak the drones. The analysts and technicians over at Ferris Air lose sight of the drones and Carol informs Hal of the drones' cloaking devices: they bend light around them to render the objects invisible. To find them, Hal constructs a visor that can filter various wavelenghts of light. He successfully destroys a drone above the skies of Tokyo and immediately figures out that Sinestro is trying to cause fear among the people of Earth so he can power up his ring and leave Earth.

To counteract that fear, Hal finds a news group reporting the drone's activity at Tokyo and delivers a speech to the people of Earth. He tells them not to give in to fear because that's what Sinestro wants. Instead, humanity has to be brave and power through that fear because the ability to overcome fear is what makes them special among the species of the universe. He promises to protect them, no matter what happens. He goes back into the sky just as Sinestro prepares for the final phase of his plan.

At Ferris Air, the analysts have already found a signal to track the last two drones, which are heading in two opposite directions: one towards Washington, D.C., and the other towards Moscow. Hal might be able to stop one, but he won't be able to stop the other. To stop them both, Hal flies into low orbit and generates two constructs that will follow the drones. He will have to control them both as they move towards opposite directions. The task is arduous and Hal is forced to push himself to his limits, but he successfully destroys the drones, just as Ferris Air has located the instigator of the attacks in Arizona.

Hal breaks into Sinestro's bunker, only to find Sinestro alone, without any support. Sinestro, speaking in a low voice, says that, after their last confrontation, something happened to the emotional spectrum and he was left without power. He tried to return home but the United Planets closely monitored travel around the Earth. Trapped without a way home was frustrating enough for Sinestro, but what really infuriated him was that the people of Earth didn't fear him anymore. That's why he wanted to cause fear among humans. He wanted to return home and to feel powerful again, but Hal, always the optimist, had to screw that up.

Hal isn't sorry to have disappointed Sinestro, but Sinestro isn't disappointed. Red energy surrounds Sinestro, who openly proclaims his rage.
