Synopsis for "Resurrection"

Red Lantern carries the unconscious Alan Scott to his hideout and tells Alan his backstory when he starts to wake up.

Vladimir Sokov was born in Bobruisk, Belarus. In 1923, he leaves home and joins the Red Army to escape his abusive, alcoholic father. He quickly wins the respect of his comrades and becomes a decorated soldier, but is eager for advancement and so seduces a high-ranking male official in order to be inducted into military intelligence. His superiors assign him to infiltrate an American project to obtain an ancient source of power known as the Crimson Flame, and retrieve the Flame for the glory of the Soviet Union. He is given the false identity of an American soldier named Johnny Ladd and is sent to New York City. Deep cover agents in the US Army get him assigned to Project: Crimson, and he is able to quickly bluff his way into being an integral part of the team despite a lack of engineering knowledge. He quickly realises that Alan Scott is homosexual and intensely attracted to him and seduces him, using their proximity to steal classified information from right under Alan's nose. He insists this was merely a necessity of the mission and that he never had feelings for Alan, revealing that when he slipped his ring on Alan's finger and asked him to run away with him he was trying to distract Alan from a Soviet boat that was trailing the ship.

When the ship finds the Crimson Flame and he is pulled overboard he drowns, hearing the Crimson Flame's voice in his mind say "We brinng deatthhh... we bringgg resurrection". The Flame restores him to life and he is rescued by Soviet divers. Just for a moment he sees a flash of green in the red. As well as Vladimir, the Soviets manage to harvest the Crimson Flame from the ocean floor; most of it dies away but they are able to preserve some of it in a small containment unit. They are taken to the Red Labs in Moscow, where Vladimir spends two years undergoing painful surgical tests to determine how the Flame has changed him. The scientists attempted to weaponise the Crimson Flame but find that only Vladimir can summon and control its energy, as such they plan to make him into a super soldier and build a corps of men around him once they learn more about it. However when Green Lantern, who Vladimir immediately recognises as Alan Scott, debuts the Soviet government decide to create their own superhero to counter him. The scientists reshape the containment unit into a lantern and fashion a ring to act as a focus for his powers.

Vladimir mocks Alan for holding on to the ring he gave him and for falling for his cover, which he admits was not particularly convincing. Alan attacks him in a rage and demands to know why he killed Robert and Tommy, but Vladimir knocks him to the ground and phases through the wall. Although Alan's ring is almost out of power, he calls up its last reserves of energy and chases after Red Lantern. Alan pursues Vladimir in the skies over New York until his ring runs out of power and he falls to Earth. Red Lantern catches him in an energy bubble and safely brings him down to a rooftop. He tells Alan that he has no idea what he's capable of and that their powers are fuelled by emotion; Alan's suppression of his own feelings made him easy to defeat. Green Lantern asks why, if all Red Lantern wants to do is defeat him, he killed his friends.

After a moment of silence Red Lantern says he didn't want to kill anyone, and Alan asks if he did it because he was jealous of them. Red Lantern angrily insists he is not gay and says he has a wife now. Alan asks him if his wife knows what he really is, and when Red Lantern asks what that is, Alan replies "A spy".

Alan turns his back to Red Lantern and leans up against the wall of the bubble. After a moment Vladimir does the same and they stand back-to-back with only the bubble between them. Alan asks Vladimir if he remembers a lakehouse they spent two weeks at together once, he denies it but Alan knows he is lying. He reveals that he bought the house at great expense despite hating it, because he felt like an echo of "Johnny" was still there. They turn to face each other and Alan puts his hand on the bubble; after a moment's hesitation, Vladimir does the same. Suddenly Alan punches through the bubble and hits Vladimir in the face. He drops the red lantern and Alan grabs it. Vladimir shouts that it is too dangerous but Alan charges his ring with the red lantern, become imbued with the power of the Crimson Flame.
