t and Friend. The only other meet we participated in this year was theState Meet, which was held at DePauw on May 26th. Inthis meet each school represented is allowed only a two-manteam. Ritter and Houston represented Purdue, Ritter play-ing the singles. In the doubles Purdue played Butler first, winning fromthem by 6-0, 6-2. At the same time Indiana played and wonfrom DePauw. In the semi-finals Purdue lost to Indianaby 6-1, 6-4, 5-7, 4-6, 6-8. The finals were won by Whaylonand Oldfather of Hanover. In the singles Ritter lost to Hunt of DePauw who finallywon the state championship in the singles. After the tournament the State Tennis Association heldits meeting. At this Oldfather of Hanover was electedpresident, Kingsbury of Butler, secretary and manager andHouston of Purdue, treasurer. It was decided to hold the1(X)6 meet at Butler in Indianapolis. This being the last meet and the end of the school year,the tennis season closed and the courts were shut down forthe summer. 269 THEBRIS

Under the Conference ruling, Freshmen are not eligiblefor the Varsity football team in large universities, so inorder to take advantage of the last year, Freshmen teamswere organized last fall. At Purdue the first year team wasunder the control of the Athletic Association and a compe-tent coach was served to drill the youngsters in the greatgame. A manager was appointed and a schedule made upwhich included games with the Freshies of rival universities. Under such favorable conditions quite a number of 09men responded to the call for candidates and went to workwith vim and vigor determine
