DSS images are copyright: https://archive.stsci.edu/dss/acknowledging.html Lithopsian (talk) 19:33, 31 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies, I think the caption I gave the image may have misled you - turns out the image isn't actually taken by DSS. It was created using DSS data, which is freely available, by Donald Pelletier. This can be confirmed by going to the image and translating the caption given there:
"Image created using the Aladin Sky Atlas software from the Strasbourg Astronomical Data Center and DSS (Digitized Sky Survey) data. DSS is one of the programs of STScI (Space Telescope Science Institute) whose files are in the public domain ( http://archive.stsci.edu/data_use.html )"
Again, apologies for the misunderstanding - I've since fixed the caption. DeliriousWolf (talk) 14:03, 1 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Does that qualify as original research or just "Wikipedia is not a reliable source"? Seriously, just because an author claims an image is in the public domain doesn't make it so. The link in the quote itself makes it clear that DSS is simply scans of copyrighted photographic plates, and also explicitly states that it is copyright. For more details, see https://archive.stsci.edu/dss/copyright.html or http://archive.eso.org/dss/dss-copyrights.html which says basically the same thing.
