Well, there are 2 main reasons. First, the 4 white triangles should each have an angle pointing to the point right in the middle. Second, there is a small imperfection about the upper-left arc. These geometric mistakes need to be fixed. NoSeeNoBye (talk) 02:18, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Did you have a convincing reason to change file:cifrão symbol.svg (). In almost all cases, the Gentium Book version is illegible at the 15 pixel size used inline (either by hand or, on en.wiki, using template:cifrão), for example 123456. The problem is that the font you have chosen is too heavy. Is there a Gentium Book Light that you can use instead? Otherwise I'm afraid we must revert.

I can see that your version looks a lot better at 100px and up, so if there is no light font, maybe you need to create a new file for that purpose? JMF (talk) 13:01, 29 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

still looks way too heavy to me, and too tall (see 123456), but https://fonts.google.com/specimen/Gentium+Book+Plus/about suggests that a light face exists. If you have already downloaded, can you check it? (My hand-drawn version wasn't great, undeniably amateur, so ignore as an option.) And if you are really keen, a better optical size would be way cool (see https://fonts.google.com/knowledge/choosing_type/choosing_typefaces_that_have_optical_sizes).

The existing predominant usage is in the 12 to 20px range. The large form is used rarely. 'Too heavy' and 'too tall' generally means too big. It looks better to me set to 12 pt rather than 15.

Okay, lighter weight -- lighter than Garamond, actually, but also with a narrower letter (and slightly narrower than the book weight). Also set it higher in the img space, as it was riding low.

I can change the whitespace on the sides, or the spacing between the two bars, which are independent objects in the SVG and so are trivial to move.

I uploaded Garamond. For me, the examples where you wrote 'still looks way too heavy to me, and too tall' look just about perfect now. Maybe you could revert in the file history and adjust the sizing in the template to see which of the three works best for you, and if none are satisfactory, we can try something else.

Yes, this looks a lot better now and IMO you can continue to roll it out. (I forgot about usages in other projects, so now accept your argument.) The spacing looks fine and yes the baseline correction was much needed, it has always annoyed me. The metrics should be about the same the number 5 (with the bars extending into the ascender and descender areas), so that looks right too.

The 12px/15px decision arose through the legibility issue: as you say, 12 is the better size in running text (matches the digits) but the smudging effect made anything less than 15 unusable. That is no longer such an issue.

Of course we still have the MOS:ACCESS issue: a visitor who needs to set their default font size (for everything) to, say, 48 point will definitely not be able to decipher the little smudge. But, without a Unicode code point, I have no idea how we can respond. I doubt though that it will figure highly on their list of daily frustrations. JMF (talk) 10:09, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
