Despite the fact that a 23-year-old playing at Triple-A is significantly closer to reaching the big leagues than a 17-year-old just starting his pro career in rookie ball, the term "prospect" is generally used as a catch-all that lumps all up-and-comers into the same category.

While raw tools and long-term upside are always part of the deal with prospects, those start to take a back seat to on-field production the higher a prospect climbs the organizational ladder.

Ahead, we've highlighted each MLB team's top prospect at each level of the minor leagues—Triple-A, Double-A, High-A, Single-A and rookie ball—with the Dominican Summer League and stateside complex leagues all lumped into the "rookie ball" category.

The goal here was to provide a snapshot of where things stand as the 2024 minor league season winds to a close, setting the stage for how each team's minor league system might look when next season kicks off.

Players who are currently on the injured list and have been sidelined since before Aug. 1 were excluded from the conversation, since they have not been active participants at their respective level for a significant chunk of time.

The undersized 5'8" right-hander regularly touches triple-digits with his fastball, and he has drawn some comparisons to former St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Carlos Martínez.

    High-A: LHP Hagen Smith
    Single-A: OF George Wolkow
    Rookie: IF Caleb Bonemer

Prospect Spotlight: College pitchers are often shut down after signing so as not to further add to their season workload, but the White Sox have given No. 5 overall pick Hagen Smith a chance to get his feet wet in pro ball. The 21-year-old has allowed seven hits and three earned runs with seven strikeouts in 7.2 innings over three starts in his debut at High-A.

    Triple-A: OF Jacob Melton
    Double-A: OF Luis Baez

    Single-A: RHP Anderson Brito
    Rookie: RHP Ryan Forcucci

Prospect Spotlight: The Astros signed Anderson Brito for just $10,000 in 2023, and he was already 19 years old when he made his pro debut earlier this year. He posted a dominant 0.40 ERA and 40-to-6 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 22.1 innings in the Dominican Summer League to kick off his pro career, and he has continued to impress since coming stateside in July.

The 2021 seventh-round pick has a 3.18 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 146 strikeouts in 124.2 innings between Double-A and Triple-A this season.

    Single-A: C Dario Laverde
    Rookie: SS Joswa Lugo

Prospect Spotlight: Shortstop Joswa Lugo could fly up Top 100 prospect lists next year when he makes his stateside debut. The 17-year-old is hitting .301/.370/.466 with 11 doubles, five home runs, 37 RBI and 18 steals in 53 games in the Dominican Summer League, living up to the hype that came with landing a $2.3 million bonus back in January.

Los Angeles Dodgers

    High-A: OF Josue De Paula
    Single-A: OF Eduardo Quintero
    Rookie: SS Joendry Vargas

Prospect Spotlight: Left-hander Jackson Ferris was acquired during the offseason in the deal that sent Michael Busch to the Chicago Cubs, and it's shaping up to be a win-win move for both sides. The 20-year-old has emerged as arguably the top pitching prospect in the Dodgers system, posting a 3.20 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 145 strikeouts in 126.2 innings between High-A and Double-A.

Miami Marlins

    Single-A: LHP Keyner Benitez
    Rookie: OF Andres Valor

Prospect Spotlight: Despite an undersized 6'1", 165-pound frame, Keyner Benitez has middle-of-the-rotation potential thanks to his advanced pitchability and plus athleticism. The 18-year-old has posted a 3.12 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 58 strikeouts in 57.2 innings at Single-A since he was promoted from rookie ball on May 31.

    Single-A: RHP Josh Knoth
    Rookie: SS/3B Jesus Made

Prospect Spotlight: Few prospects have done more to boost their prospect stock this year than Jesus Made, who signed for $950,000 out of the Dominican Republic in January. The 17-year-old has a 50-hit, 55-power offensive profile, and he is batting .331/.458/.554 with 21 extra-base hits, 28 steals and more walks (39) than strikeouts (28) over 51 games in the Dominican Summer League.

Minnesota Twins

    Triple-A: OF Emmanuel Rodriguez
    Double-A: OF Walker Jenkins
    High-A: SS Kaelen Culpepper
    Single-A: RHP Charlee Soto
    Rookie: LHP Dasan Hill

Prospect Spotlight: After splitting the season between Single-A and High-A, outfielder Walker Jenkins is getting a taste of Double-A to close out his first full professional season. The No. 5 overall pick in the 2023 draft has as much offensive upside as any prospect in the minors, and starting next season at Double-A could put him on track to debut at some point after the All-Star break.

New York Mets

18 of 30

    Brandon Sproat

    Triple-A: RHP Brandon Sproat
    Double-A: SS Jett Williams
    High-A: OF Nick Morabito
    Single-A: OF Carson Benge
    Rookie: 2B/SS Jeremy Rodriguez

Prospect Spotlight: The Mets placed Brandon Sproat on the Development List at Triple-A earlier this week, which likely rules out the possibility of him receiving a September call-up. The 23-year-old has had a terrific breakout season, posting a 3.31 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 129 strikeouts in 114.1 innings over three levels, and he could compete for a rotation spot next spring.

New York Yankees

    Double-A: OF Spencer Jones
    High-A: SS George Lombard Jr.

Prospect Spotlight: Shortstop Roderick Arias has held his own as a teenager in the Florida State League, hitting .233/.335/.393 with 21 doubles, 13 home runs, 74 RBI and 37 steals in 124 games. It was a step backward from his rookie-ball production, but he has all the tools to be a consensus Top 50 prospect in the not-too-distant future.

Prospect Spotlight: Colby Thomas has been one of the most productive power hitters in the minors this season, hitting .275/.338/.566 with 42 doubles, 29 home runs and 87 RBI in 123 games between Double-A and Triple-A. The 23-year-old could join Lawrence Butler and JJ Bleday in the Oakland outfield next season.

Philadelphia Phillies

    Triple-A: RHP Mick Abel
    Double-A: OF Justin Crawford
    High-A: SS Bryan Rincon
    Single-A: SS Starlyn Caba
    Rookie: 2B/3B Aroon Escobar

Prospect Spotlight: Take your pick between Justin Crawford and Aidan Miller as the best prospect currently suiting up for Double-A Reading. Crawford has been more productive at that level since receiving a midseason promotion, but Miller may ultimately offer the higher long-term ceiling.

Pittsburgh Pirates

22 of 30

    Bubba Chandler

    Triple-A: RHP Bubba Chandler
    Double-A: 2B Termarr Johnson
    High-A: IF Jack Brannigan
    Single-A: RHP Zander Mueth
    Rookie: SS/OF Konnor Griffin

Prospect Spotlight: After Jared Jones broke camp with a rotation spot this past spring and Paul Skenes joined him in the Pittsburgh rotation not long after Opening Day, right-hander Bubba Chandler is on track to be the next exciting young arm to join the Pirates staff. The 21-year-old has a 3.07 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 140 strikeouts in 114.1 innings between Double-A and Triple-A, emerging as one of baseball's top pitching prospects.

San Diego Padres

    Double-A: RHP Victor Lizarraga
    High-A: C Ethan Salas
    Single-A: SS Leodalis De Vries
    Rookie: LHP Kash Mayfield

Prospect Spotlight: Don't sleep on Tirso Ornelas as a potential factor in 2025. The 24-year-old is having a big offensive season at Triple-A El Paso, hitting .304/.375/.502 with 25 doubles, 20 home runs and 82 RBI in 120 games. If Jurickson Profar leaves for greener pastures in free agency, he could be a potential in-house replacement.

San Francisco Giants

    Triple-A: LHP Carson Whisenhunt
    Double-A: 1B Bryce Eldridge
    High-A: OF James Tibbs III
    Single-A: SS Walker Martin
    Rookie: OF Rayner Arias

Prospect Spotlight: It looks like the Giants made the right decision having Bryce Eldridge focus solely on hitting after he was originally drafted as a two-way player. The 6'7" slugger is hitting .294/.376/.535 with 27 doubles, 23 home runs and 90 RBI in 108 games across three minor league levels, and he made his Double-A debut on Sept. 3.

Seattle Mariners

    Triple-A: 1B Tyler Locklear
    Double-A: C Harry Ford
    High-A: SS Colt Emerson
    Single-A: SS Tai Peete
    Rookie: RHP Ryan Sloan

Prospect Spotlight: With a 60-grade hit tool and a well-rounded overall game, Colt Emerson has soared up top prospect lists this season. The 19-year-old has a modest .263/.393/.376 batting line, but his 14.9 percent walk rate and consistent hard contact speak to his tremendous offensive upside.

St. Louis Cardinals

26 of 30

    Tink Hence

    Triple-A: LHP Quinn Mathews
    Double-A: RHP Tink Hence
    High-A: RHP Darlin Saladin
    Single-A: 2B/SS JJ Wetherholt
    Rookie: RHP Brian Holiday

Prospect Spotlight: An overlooked prospect due to his undersized 5'11", 150-pound frame and slow start to his pro career, Darlin Saladin is having a quietly excellent season, going 10-3 with a 2.71 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 134 strikeouts in 123 innings between Single-A and High-A. The 21-year-old has some obvious reliever risk, but his fastball will keep him on the prospect radar.

Tampa Bay Rays

27 of 30

    Carson Williams

    Triple-A: LHP Ian Seymour
    Double-A: SS Carson Williams
    High-A: RHP Brody Hopkins
    Single-A: RHP Gary Gill Hill
    Rookie: LHP Yereny Teus

Prospect Spotlight: Between getting drafted during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season and undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2022, Ian Seymour had just 114 professional innings under his belt heading into the 2024 season. The 25-year-old has broken out with a 2.31 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 158 strikeouts in 140.1 innings between Double-A and Triple-A this year, and he should be ready to push for a roster spot next spring.

Texas Rangers

    Triple-A: OF Dustin Harris
    Double-A: SS/3B Sebastian Walcott
    High-A: C Malcolm Moore
    Single-A: 2B/SS Echedry Vargas
    Rookie: OF Paulino Santana

Prospect Spotlight: While Sebastian Walcott is the top prospect at Double-A Frisco right now, it's the emergence of the pitching trio of Emiliano Teodo, Alejandro Rosario and Winston Santos that might be the biggest story in the Texas farm system this year. After years of struggling to develop pitching, there are some promising arms on the horizon.

Toronto Blue Jays

    Double-A: 3B/OF Charles McAdoo
    High-A: LHP Kendry Rojas
    Single-A: SS Arjun Nimmala
    Rookie: RHP Trey Yesavage

Prospect Spotlight: The Blue Jays acquired Jake Bloss (via Astros for Yusei Kikuchi) and Charles McAdoo (via Pirates for Isiah Kiner-Falefa) at the trade deadline, and while they stopped short of a full-blown fire sale, they did a great job restocking the farm system by flipping their upcoming free agents.

Washington Nationals

    Double-A: 1B/3B Yohandy Morales
    High-A: RHP Jarlin Susana
    Single-A: RHP Travis Sykora
    Rookie: SS Luke Dickerson

Prospect Spotlight: Right-hander Travis Sykora was one of the top prep pitchers in the 2023 draft class, and the Nationals went way over-slot to sign him to a $2.6 million bonus as a third-round pick. The 6'6" right-hander has a 2.33 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 129 strikeouts in 85 innings over 20 starts at Single-A, and he has limited opposing hitters to a .168 average.
