For being one of the most influential cultural forces in the history of gaming, it’s kind of a thing for people to shit on Nintendo. Its current console, the Switch, is home to some of the greatest games ever made, but in its seventh year on the market it’s looking a bit long in the tooth, without meaningful releases for nearly a year while its successor lurks in the shadows. And while the company opts to play coy about the basic existence of a Switch 2, it’s spent...

NBCUniversal’s streaming service Peacock had a big July and a massive August thanks almost exclusively to the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics. Netflix had an equally massive January-to-June, in part because of all NBCUniversal’s animated movies available on the streamer.
In case you’ve been living under a mountain of other Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, on Thursday, September 19, Netflix shared more than 16,000 lines of its viewership data from the first half of 2024. It lists every show or movie watched on Netflix around the globe, how many views each had, and for how many hours they were watched. Light reading material for us.
Twice a year, there are endless takeaways from Netflix’s data dump. One of the big ones from this set was just how dominant NBCUniversal’s animated films are — only not on NBCUniversal’s own streaming platform, Peacock.

Nintendo first gained international recognition in 1981 after the release of Donkey Kong. That escalated to newer heights with the main protagonist of the Mushroom Kingdom, who became the mascot for the company following its popularity. New characters then joined the party, including Link, Kirby, Pikachu, and more.
Many of those characters will give nostalgia to the fans who used to play the games created by the company. Maybe that’s why they are delivering fun to the gamers by repackaging nostalgia in the form of characters like Mario and Zelda today.
Nintendo, Mario, and Zelda Makes a Great Trio But it Needs a Break
The term Nintendo is said to have the meaning ‘leave luck to heaven’. They aren’t really adhering to it; instead, they have left their luck to characters like Mario or Zelda. There’s a variety of them, but these two can be seen walking around...

“Blink Twice” (Amazon MGM), actress Zoë Kravitz’s feature directorial debut with Channing Tatum as a tech billionaire who invites a cocktail waitress to his private island, was a modest performer in theaters last month. Its opening weekend only reached #4 at the box office, earning $7 million, with the full run amounting to $22 million.
Flash forward a few weeks, and it is #1 for its debut week in PVOD. It jumped to the top even as three other new releases (all weaker performers) also made at least one of the two top 10 lists below.
Netflix continues to find appeal for its recent originals, with four films in its top five. These though were trumped by “The Garfield Movie,” the latest Sony release to transition to the streamer four months after release. “Takoyaki Surprise!” – this is the exclamation that greets players as they load up Red Triangle’s action clicker.
Takoyaki Surprise has nostalgia in spades for anyone who grew up gaming in the 80s and 90s (or avid fans of early tabletop or cabinet arcade machines). Red Triangle has put a lot of effort into capturing the essence of early-generation gaming, from the “oh-so-cheesy” voiceover to composing unique monophonic loops suited to each level; I felt like I was back in London’s Trocadero.
Takoyaki (Grilled Octopus) follows the story of Tako and Sakana, two samurai who fight through hordes of different enemies to stop the evil Chef Shefu from grilling Princess Octopus on live TV!

The Criterion Channel’s at its best when October rolls around, consistently engaging in the strongest horror line-ups of any streamer. 2024 will bring more than a few iterations of their spooky programming: “Horror F/X” highlights the best effects-based scares through the likes of Romero, Cronenberg, Lynch, Tobe Hooper, James Whale; “Witches” does what it says on the tin (and inside the tin is the underrated Italian anthology film featuring Clint Eastwood cuckolded by Batman); “Japanese Horror” runs the gamut of classics; a Stephen King series puts John Carpenter and The Lawnmower Man on equal playing ground; October’s Criterion Editions are Rosemary’s Baby, Night of the Hunter, Häxan; a made-for-tv duo includes Carpenter’s underrated Someone’s Watching Me!; meanwhile, The Wailing and The Babadook stream alongside a collection of Cronenberg and Stephanie Rothman titles.
Otherwise, Winona Ryder and Raúl Juliá are given retrospectives, as are filmmakers Arthur J. Bressan Jr. and Lionel Rogosin.

As the world eagerly awaits the arrival of the Nintendo Switch 2, speculation is rife about what direction the Japanese gaming giant will take with its next-gen console. While the Switch has been a resounding success, thanks in no small part to its unique hybrid design and stellar first-party titles, there’s one area where Nintendo could really set itself apart from the competition.

In a market where Xbox is known for its multiplayer prowess and PlayStation for its blockbuster exclusives, Nintendo has an opportunity to carve out a niche that could define the Switch 2’s identity. By focusing on a genre that its rivals often overlook, Nintendo could create a console that truly stands out from the crowd.

"Minecraft" is, without exaggeration, the best-selling game in the history of video games. It is so wildly popular that it was an inevitability that Hollywood would one day come calling. That day has finally come: "A Minecraft Movie" is hitting theaters in 2025. We recently got a look at the first trailer for the film, which is a live-action interpretation of the wildly popular sandbox game, and to say that the internet was vocal in sharing thoughts on the trailer would be an understatement. Well, now someone has taken it upon themselves to show us what could have been, by giving that trailer the animated treatment.
Twitter user Alumio recently uploaded an animated version of the very same trailer that Warner Bros. released last week. Same voices. Same shots. Same everything else, only animated instead of live-action. As of this writing, the animated version of the trailer has 10.7 million viewers and nearly 300,000 likes.

Gaming-inspired films are usually interesting, to say the least. They often get a bad rap for being low-quality flops (which has certainly been the case with some movies) but there are more than a handful of incredible, gaming-inspired films out there too. As gaming has grown in prevalence, so too has the wonderful world of gaming movies, giving us plenty of films to both laugh at when it goes wrong and cherish when done right.
Today, we will take a look at many of the most notable gaming-inspired films, going over the flops, the hits and the in-betweens. Let’s get straight into it.

Video game movies can be seriously big business these days. In 2023, The Super Mario Bros Movie was second only to Barbie in the global box office stakes ($1.36 million), while this Christmas brings the much-anticipated threequel Sonic The Hedgehog 3 – there’s a sense, all round, that Hollywood is proving more adept at bringing what gamers love about these worlds to the big screen. Next up? Make way for A Minecraft Movie, which is… well, a Minecraft movie, aiming to take the lo-fi, blocky sandbox smash hit and turn it into something cinematic. Here’s your first look at the trailer.

From the outside, platform games might look peacefully entertaining when seemingly all you have to do is jump and run from point A to point B. For some titles, however, this couldn’t be further from the truth.
These games make it their mission to destroy you again and again, leaving you pulling your hair out as you try to make it through the levels. The brutal challenges will test your skills and patience, yet that sweet, rewarding feeling after making it through a stage makes it all worth it – at least for those bold enough to persevere.

Platformer games have been a staple of the video game industry for decades, but not all are created equal. Some, like Cuphead, are designed to test players’ patience, reflexes, and mental fortitude to the breaking point.
While the genre might seem simplistic, many developers have taken it upon themselves to create some of the most unforgiving and soul-crushing experiences in gaming history. Here are five of the most challenging platformers ever created.

For the last few generations of console video gaming, the landscape has been, more or less, pretty stable. Sony and Microsoft battle for dominance with their cutting-edge machinery while Nintendo lives on with something quaint dependent on their first-party quality. Of course, this wasn’t always the way. There was a time when the world of video games housed a war that defined the extreme ‘90s. It was a time when a company sized up one of the most dominant giants in any industry and briefly won over most of the world by saying, “We’re cooler than them.”
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. It was the age of plumbers, it was the age of hedgehogs. It was the epoch of green sweat, it was the epoch of blood codes. It was the season of playing it loud, it was the season of...

The brilliant lights of the big top illuminated a heroic figure swooping through the air. Aero the Acrobat, star performer of the infamous World of Amusement Circus and Funpark, was taking his latest daring maneuvers. As a nimble bat, Aero delighted crowds with his death-defying stunts. But trouble was brewing behind the scenes.
The nefarious Edgar Ektor, banned from the circus years ago due to childhood mischief, sought revenge through chaos and sabotage. Assisted by the explosive antics of Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel, Ektor’s dastardly plans threatened to close the curtains on the circus for good. It was up to Aero to soar in with saving grace and bounce Ektor’s plots back with plenty of panache. Such was the setup for Aero the Acrobat’s inaugural outing in 1993.
Developed by revered retro studio Sunsoft, Aero the Acrobat took flight on the Snes and Genesis amidst a colorful cavalcade of mascot platformers.

Yuzu’s story begins amongst familiar sights of pixelated hills and cheerful music. As a young Kitune, she runs and jumps through lands inspired by another era of gaming, when adventure was distilled into simple controls and exploration was rewarded with hidden treasures.
Yet beneath similar mechanics lies a tale all its own. Yuzu is coming of age in a time of change, as old traditions face new possibilities. Her loyal friend Kiri struggles with unexpected feelings, while the kindly mage Akko sees beyond what meets the eye. A dance is meant to celebrate, but jealousy arises and actions are taken that cannot be undone.
Now Yuzu must travel the five worlds to undo the harm, aided by mysterious powers awakened in each new realm. Along the way she will discover who her true friends are, learn her own heart, and find her small role in a much larger story.

Beloved classic games are being brought to a new form, and audiences are loving it. Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros got fans super hyped, and the film itself was incredibly fun. It’s always exciting seeing the media we know and love to gain new content, and having video games become movies adds another lens to the story. It gives the characters more of a personality and allows for development within and between characters. Instead of Mario going on an adventure to save Princess Peach from Bowser, we get to see Mario (Chris Pratt) struggle with obstacle courses and work alongside Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) to rescue Luigi (Charlie Day) from Bowser (Jack Black). It’s time to pour one out for Game Informer. After 33 years of being the industry’s most popular video game magazine and website, Game Informer is shutting down. Owned by Game Stop, one of the last brick-and-mortar video game retailers (barely) standing in a fast-moving world of digital and streaming entertainment, Game Informer is as much a part of some gamers’ history as Mario or Sonic the Hedgehog.
GameStop published a memo addressing the closure on Friday morning, titled “The Final Level: Farewell from Game Informer.”
“After 33 thrilling years of bringing you the latest news, reviews and insights from the ever-evolving world of gaming, it is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of Game Informer,” the announcement said. “From the early days of pixelated adventures to today’s immersive virtual reality realms, we’ve been honored to share this incredible journey with you, our loyal readers.

After literally years of waiting, the "Borderlands" movie is finally upon us. Directed by Eli Roth (with an assist from "Deadpool" director Tim Miller), the feature film based on the wildly popular series of video games arrives on the big screen next weekend. Not only have fans of the games long been waiting to see these characters brought to life, but Lionsgate has been actively working on this adaptation for several years. It's been plagued with delays, but it's now, at long last, going to get its day in court. Unfortunately, based on the early indicators, from a business perspective, it's not going to be a bumpy ride.
"Borderlands" is currently eyeing an opening weekend domestically in the $13 to $18 million range, per Box Office Theory. The big question mark right now is the film's budget, which has yet to be reported. It is estimated to be in the $100 million range.

For nearly two decades, the beloved Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games series has been a staple at the Olympics. The long-standing partnership between the International Olympic Committee (Ioc) and Nintendo and Sega has ended.
Instead, the Ioc has changed its focus towards newer trends like NFTs and esports this time. This means that there is no new installment of the iconic series with the 2024 Olympic Games. Fans will no doubt miss the partnership that merged video game culture with Olympic sports.

There’s no doubt that Nintendo and Lego share a special relationship that began with Mario. However, it was further expanded to the hit-title Animal Crossing, and soon, The Legend of Zelda.
However, the two companies aren’t done just yet! We’re soon going to see a new Mario set hitting the store, but it’s unlike anything we’ve seen before. This upcoming set features Mario steering Yoshi in Super Mario World in all of its pixelated glory! While it’s great to see we’re finally getting one of the most requested Mario sets, fans already know it’s going to be too expensive!
The New Super Mario Lego Set Might Be Too Expensive
Lego still hasn’t officially revealed the upcoming Super Mario World set. However, one of the stores that stock up these sets in Singapore accidentally added to its page a bit too early.

As Nintendo prepares for its future with the eventual successor to the Nintendo Switch, it also has taken the time to celebrate its past, releasing the compilation title Nintendo World Championships: Nes Edition on the Switch. This release not only revisits the classic games from Nintendo’s inaugural home console but nearly coincides with the 35th anniversary of the cult classic 1989 movie The Wizard, which revolved around a similar competition involving Nintendo Entertainment System games. More than offering a trip down an Nes-tinged memory lane, both the movie and Switch compilation highlight the early, halcyon days of the proto-esports scene.
The earliest days of esports in the United States were a magical, untested period for the industry and Nintendo played a huge role in shaping it. The Wizard distills the innocent magic and cynicism-free spirit of the scene that modern esports unfortunately lacks and it explores this open gaming frontier.

The box office is getting a saving throw, primarily thanks to two animated films. “Despicable Me 4” and “Inside Out 2” are becoming massive juggernauts at the theater. This is giving Hollywood and the movie theater business a much-needed boost.
After this weekend, “Despicable Me 4” is heading towards $500 million globally. It made another $88 million and is now at $437.8 million worldwide.
This also makes the “Despicable Me” / “Minions” franchise the first animated franchise to hit $5 billion globally, so there are big wins there for Illumination.
Meanwhile, “Inside Out 2” is still climbing, hitting $1.35 billion globally and making it the fourth highest-grossing animated film of all time worldwide. It just beat “Frozen” for the spot and is quickly catching up to the “Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which holds the number three spot at $1.36 billion.
The first two spots belong to “The Lion King” (2019) at $1.66 billion and “Frozen 2” at $1.45 billion.

While video games have enjoyed a surprisingly long history of quality spin-offs, the fact is that the vast majority of video game spin-offs could most generously be described as forgotten. For every Mario Kart, Mega Man X, World of Warcraft, or Metroid Prime, you have hundreds of spin-off games that have largely been lost to time.
Yet, some forgotten video game spin-offs are far more interesting than others. Some are quite good and deserve more recognition than they’ll probably ever get. Others seem like they should have been a bigger deal than they ultimately were. Together, each of these games will make you ask some variation of the always fascinating question, “Wait, that game exists?”
The Misadventures of Tron Bonne – Mega Man (1999)
Given that the mainline Mega Man series tends to go dormant for long periods, it’s easy to forget that Mega Man is one of the most prolific franchises in gaming.

The upcoming Gears of War film adaptation could learn a thing or two from previous attempts at bringing games to the big screen, and some fans have pitched an interesting direction for the film that Netflix might be smart to consider.
Video game adaptations are quickly replacing comic book films as the hottest property; to continue to thrive, they must stand out and avoid the pitfalls of the comic book movie genre.

Astro Bot, is set for release this year, has a full-fledged title, unlike the tech demo Astro’s Playroom, which was developed by the same studio. One of the most outstanding features of these games is the platforming immersion they provide, making full use of the PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller. The weight of this game has now surfaced, a revelation that has taken fans by surprise.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a new 2024 box office champion. After less than two weeks, Disney's "Inside Out 2" has managed to outgross every other movie released this year so far, overtaking Denis Villeneuve's "Dune: Part Two" ($711.8 million) to take the crown. The only question now is just how high Pixar's latest can fly.
Director Kelsey Mann's "Inside Out 2" took in an absolutely ridiculous $100 million in its second weekend domestically, dropping just 35% from its record-breaking $154.2 million debut. Pixar's latest also pulled in a stellar $164.4 million overseas in its second frame. That brings the movie's running total to $724.3 million and counting. That number includes $355.1 million from domestic ticket sales. This is to take nothing away from "Dune: Part Two," which made $282.1 million domestically and $429.7 million internationally, coming in well above expectations. It's just no longer the king of the hill.

Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” (Disney) grossed $254 million in its first seven days in U.S. and Canadian theaters. By as early as Saturday, it will best “Dune: Part Two” (Warner Bros.) as 2024’s biggest success, and by Sunday, the film should reach at least $315 million.
The surprisingly strong animated sequel (top industry projections gave it a shot at $300 million) now looks certain to gross at least $500 million for its run. That would make it the sixth to do so since theaters reopened.
Buttressed by summer vacation and the mid-week Juneteenth holiday, the seven-day total is $14 million better than “Super Mario Bros.,” and stunningly only $4 million below “Barbie.” But at this point, odds are against “Inside Out 2” equaling “Mario” ($574 million), much less reaching “Barbie” ($636 million). But to be even talking about getting close is an incredible accomplishment for Disney’s Pixar unit, which since Covid struck, has not managed...

Although Masashi Kishimoto is known all over the world for his masterpiece Naruto, he has worked on a bunch of other stories and one-shot mangas that might not be as popular as Naruto but do have a compelling narrative. One of them was called Mario, and it even featured in the Seinen genre.
Mario by Masashi Kishimoto | Viz Media
The story of Mario follows the adventures of a mafia contract killer who is half-Japanese and half-Italian and is working in New York. He is forced to work together with a female colleague called Saori, who does not talk to men. The story offers mysterious and thriller elements and focuses on the underground mafia rule of the largest city in the world.
Kishimoto was so excited about the series that he even mentioned it in the comments of the Naruto manga, hyping up the story. However, the story did not grab much attention from the readers.

There has been a lot of talk lately about video game system sellers lately. With the industry seemingly gradually moving away from the cutthroat era of true exclusives, the topic of those killer apps that made consoles and handhelds must-have items feels both pressing and a relic of an increasingly different time. In all those discussions, though, one thing remains constant. Nobody can seem to agree on what a true system-selling video game is.
It’s not hard to understand why. The game that made you buy a console may not be the same game that inspired someone else to buy a console. It’s an interesting social phenomenon. On the one hand, video game system sellers are so common that anyone could apply that tag to just about any game ever made. On the other hand, true system sellers (the games that demonstrably led to a notable increase in...

Universal Orlando Resort must have some big plans for Epic Universe. According to Fox 25 Orlando, the theme park just took its 700 acres and made it 1,300 acres, almost doubling its size.
While there were rumors of expansion areas for the initial 700 acres, including some land near the upcoming Super Nintendo Land, it seems that a lot more land will be available for use.
We do not know what plans Universal Orlando has for the land, but some speculate we could see another water park area or entertainment complex.
I’m hoping we get more themed areas. Currently, Epic Universe will hold five themed areas, including Isle of Berk Super Nintendo Land Wizarding World of Harry Potter Dark Universe and the Celestial Park hub area.
There have been rumors that Pokemon or Legend of Zelda could come to Universal Orlando. Perhaps we could see something large added to Epic Universe?

In the manga world, Masashi Kishimoto is deemed a legend. Most of his fame and popularity came from his magnum opus, Naruto, which stands as a pillar of the Shonen Jump manga community. Mediawan Kids & Family is unveiling a raft of prestige animated feature projects at the Annecy Film Festival, including “Meow-woof” by Louis Clichy (“Asterix: The Secret of the Magic Potion”) and “Twisted” by Lino Disalvo (“Playmobil”).
Emmanuel Jacomet, who worked for over a decade alongside Aton Soumache and Dimitri Rassam on high profile IP’s such as “The Little Prince,” “Miraculous Ladybug” and “Playmobil,” took over the film division of Mediawan Kids & Family under a year ago with the ambition to develop a mix of mainstream franchise-based projects and auteur-driven 2D titles.

Is Halo seriously coming to the PlayStation? Right now, Xbox is not in the greatest state. The console company had to shut down three of its subsidiary development studios as a cost-cutting measure. That too, after a historic merger deal with Activision Blizzard worth a staggering $69 billion.
Xbox is thriving right now through some of its exclusive titles and its Game Pass. However, recently it has broken its exclusivity to surface four popular first-party titles on its arch-rival platform, PlayStation. Even popular titles like Starfield and Indiana Jones are rumored to be on PlayStation pretty soon. Now, if Halo joins the party too, then it might well be the final nail in the coffin for Xbox.

Project Tides, the upcoming open-world 3D platformer from Fabraz, is shaping up to be a unique and wild ride. The developers, known for their previous games Demon Turf and Slime-san, recently released a trailer for the upcoming project.
The game looks to immerse players in a vibrant ocean environment with a surface world that features a lively, cartoony aesthetic reminiscent of classic titles like Mario. However, upon closer inspection, hints of something darker lurking beneath the cheerful facade suggest a narrative more akin to the post-apocalyptic wastes of Fallout 3. Here’s a closer look at what we know about Project Tides so far.
The Non-Linear Exploration and Hidden Depths of Project Tides
Project Tides is a cheerful game, but something darker may lurk beneath.
The game offers the opportunity to venture into a large, expansive ocean setting. The developers refer to it as a non-linear world, and Fabraz assures that...

There has been a cloud of layoffs over the gaming industry these days. This is largely due to the excessive hiring that the companies did during and after Covid. In 2020, the gaming industry experienced a boom and wanted to make as many games as quickly as they could, resulting in an extensive hiring rate.
During this time, many industry legends left their companies to make new Aaa titles or form new companies. This enabled companies to push for more manpower, accounting for their loss of talent. They offered better salaries and incentives to flesh out the best talent in the industry.
Eventually, the market began to fall and revenue generation was not as high as it had been during the last three years, hence, the companies started firing people without accounting for the future.
