Horror comedy has become one of the most popular genres in Hindi cinema. Many stories in this genre invoke village folklore and tales of ghosts or ghouls around it. Stree and Bhool Bhulaiya are cult favorites, and besides that, Ruhi, Bhediya, and the most recent one, Munjya, were interesting as well. All of these rely on village folklore that connects to the supernatural entity with humor. Released on Zee5 Global on July 12, 2024, Kakuda is the story of an entity that goes after the men of a certain village in the rural heartland of India.

It’s common knowledge that Bollywood’s history with horror is really shaky. Despite lacking in quality filmmaking and storytelling, films like Mahal, Gumnaam, and the works done by the Ramsay brothers have gained cult status due to a severe case of nostalgia. Thanks to the Bhatts, the 2000s and 2010s were plagued with half-hearted remakes of international horror films. And it was probably the mercurial success of Bhool Bhulaiyaa, the remake of Manichitrathazhu, that caused the Hindi film industry to steer away from serious horror films. Yes, we get the occasional Tumbbad, but the landscape is largely filled with Go Goa Gone, Stree, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, and Bhediya. And, to be honest, they are quite profitable. Aditya Sarpotdar is riding this tide with Zombivli, Munjya, and now Kakuda. So, let’s talk about it.

The plot centers around Sunny (Saqib Saleem) and Indira (Sonakshi Sinha), who move to the village of Ratodi after getting married, only to find themselves cursed by Kakuda, a malevolent ghost. When Sunny fails to open a crucial door for Kakuda at 7:15 pm on their wedding night, he is cursed with a hump that will lead to his death in thirteen days.
Desperate to save Sunny, Indira enlists the help of Victor (Riteish Deshmukh), an eccentric ghost hunter known for his humorous takes on other horror comedies like “Bhool Bhulaiyaa” and “Stree,” criticizing modern ghosts as uninteresting.
