Bloody Disgusting is deeply sad to learn the news that a member of our community has passed away this week. A longtime Bd writer, Felix Vasquez Jr. was just 41 years old.
The website Cinema Crazed, which was founded by Felix, reports this week, “Felix Vasquez Jr., the film critic and publisher of the Cinema Crazed website, passed away today at Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx, New York, at the age of 41 after a brief illness.”
Cinema Crazed’s Phil Hall adds, “A native of the Bronx, Felix first came to prominence as a member of the Film Threat team of critics and wrote a column on the Bloody Disgusting horror film site. He also contributed to Cinema Blend, Crave and Screen Anarchy before launching Cinema Crazed in 2005, which celebrated horror, science-fiction and cult movies.”
Felix began writing for Bloody Disgusting back in 2018, primarily contributing the monthly “TV Terrors” column to the site.

Underway now through July 16, Severin Films‘ annual summer sale is the most ambitious in the company’s history. The Dario Argento’s Opera five-disc box set — which you can preview in an exclusive clip below — is the headliner, but there are nine more releases in addition to exclusive merchandise and big savings on past inventory.
Here’s everything you need to know about this year’s Severin Summer Sale…
Opera
In my eyes — held open with needles, of course — Opera is Argento’s last true masterpiece. While the Italian maestro attained fleeting moments of greatness later in his oeuvre, Opera is the last of his efforts that can hold its own alongside his earlier, career-defining work like Suspiria, Deep Red, Tenebrae, and The Bird with the Crystal Plumage.

John Carpenter has always been full of surprises, but it’s especially so as a septuagenarian. Through interviews, we know that the man loves video games and basketball, ideally enjoying both in the comfort of his own home. But this has extended into something we would expect most filmmakers to hate: directing remotely. But John Carpenter and remote directing got along just fine when he took on the season finale of Suburban Screams from the confines of his home.
Speaking on the Last Donut of the Night podcast, John Carpenter said that directing“Phone Stalker” was a breeze and one of the most convenient jobs he could imagine, calling the experience “fabulous. Just fabulous. I didn’t have to get up and leave the house. I could get coffee any time I wanted. I had a chair to sit in. It went great.” As far as having that necessary interaction with his cast and crew,...

Christmas and Halloween reign supreme in terms of holiday-themed horror to the point that every other holiday pales in comparison when it comes to horror offerings. Easter does have a few selections to offer, but many of them don’t lean into any familiar holiday motifs. Then there are the horror films that get lumped in simply because the villain bears likeness to the Easter bunny. It can be slim pickings. That’s okay, though, because we really only need one solid horror movie to celebrate Easter with. One that isn’t afraid to spill some Easter bunny blood.
Critters 2: The Main Course is that definitive Easter horror movie.
Co-written by David Twohy (Warlock, Pitch Black) and director Mick Garris (The Stand, Masters of Horror), Critters 2 makes clever use of the holiday as a means to implement those remaining Crite eggs stashed away in a barn from the end of Critters.

For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit Showtime’s “Masters of Horror,” which was created by Mick Garris and aired for two seasons between 2005 and 2007.
It seemed like a horror fan’s wet dream: a horror anthology series with some of the greatest horror filmmakers of all time lensing short format horror films for premium cable. Although horror icons had teamed in the past to bring us series like “Tales from the Darkside” and “Tales from the Crypt,” there wasn’t a modern series that brought them all together to have a chance to tell their stories in the anthology format. “Masters of Horror” seemed like a prime opportunity to re-invent the waning anthology horror format, and while it didn’t quite re-invent the wheel as planned, it brought with it a lot of great content from some bonafide horror icons.

Dario Argento Panico takes its title from an old interview where he said he didn’t want to create a sense of fear in viewers, he wanted to go beyond it and leave them in a state of panic. Its form is also taken from its subject’s past, following him as he isolates himself in a hotel to finish his latest script, something he frequently did early in his career.
I’m not sure that you really can isolate yourself with a film crew looking over your shoulder, but director Simone Scafidi uses this to frame his questions for the interview portions of the film. For as long as horror movies have existed, there have been carny-like marketing campaigns boasting audience members fainting, vomiting, running out of theaters in terror, and in some of the most extreme cases, having a heart attack. Films like "Psycho," "The Exorcist," and even 2023's "Talk To Me" have all become modern urban legends with the reported reactions from fans, but few films come close to the reputation of "Antrum." The Canuxploitation film from David Amito and Michael Laicini is two films in one: a documentary about "Antrum," a lost film from the 1970s that has been connected with over 85 deaths, and the remaining footage from the only known print of the film. Before the film plays, a warning covers the screen.

The biggest names in horror, uncut and uncensored. That was the hook of Masters of Horror, the short-lived anthology series that premiered on Showtime in 2005, bringing a who's who of fright cinema — including John Carpenter, Tobe Hooper, and Joe Dante — to the small screen, 60 minutes at a time.
A new scary movie by a different director every week was probably enough to get Fangoria subscribers to update their cable packages. But the truly enticing part was that none of these giants of the genre would have to water down their vision for television. In exchange for working on a tight schedule and a modest budget, each had been given complete creative control, with no limits or restrictions on the content of their episodes. It was a selling point for fans and the participating filmmakers alike.

The episode of The Black Sheep covering The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning was Written and Narrated by Andrew Hatfield, Edited by Brandon Nally, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
When did the Texas Chainsaw movies get so muddled with so many timelines? It’s not a hard thing to do. People get lost in Texas and end up victims of Leatherface and his family. I’m not saying there shouldn’t be a story line or a variation on things from time to time, hell, that’s what made Freddy, Michael, and Jason so popular. You could have even done something like the legacy sequel for Halloween, at least the first one. Oh wait, you did, and it didn’t turn out well with characters that made terrible decisions and weren’t likeable in the first place? Oh yeah, I remember that one.

It's been 13 years since horror master John Carpenter has blessed the world with a new directorial project, but the icon behind movies like "Halloween," "Escape From New York," and "The Thing" is finally returning to our screens this autumn — with a documentary-like TV horror series. "John Carpenter's Suburban Screams" will feature six nerve-shredding true stories retold by those who experienced them, and will couple the testimony with dramatic (and decidedly scary-looking) visual retellings of the story. The show is also set to include archival footage and news clips.
Carpenter is only set to direct one of the six episodes of "Suburban Screams," but he's involved in the project in other ways, lending his considerable talents as a composer to its soundtrack and executive producing the Peacock project. The show sounds like it will meet at the intersection of reality and horror movie sensibilities, which could be the perfect recipe for some great scares.

The Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead episode of The Black Sheep was Written and Narrated by Andrew Hatfield, Edited by Brandon Nally, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
It’s a rare thing to see a horror series with near complete creative control from one person. Currently, Damien Leone seems to be in the drivers seat for the Terrifier series that we are certain to get more entries in and I’ve talked about the Chucky/Child’s Play series that Don Mancini is the driving force for. There’s also another Don that’s in charge of another important horror series. Don Coscarelli gave us one of the most original and successful independent films of all time with 1979’s Phantasm. He wrote, directed, shot, and edited that first movie with his dad helping produce it and his mom doing costumes, production design,...

A New York Times Critic’s Pick, found footage cosmic horror hit The Outwaters will stream exclusively on Screambox and release on digital platforms this Friday, 17th February, via Cinedigm and Bloody Disgusting. Now fans can experience what Jezebel calls a “mind-twisting, narrative-pulverizing vision of horror” from the comfort of home. Critics are responding to The Outwaters, which is currently 71% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Rolling Stone hailed it as “obscenely effective,” while JoBlo said, “The film’s final 10 minutes are amongst the most gruesome and uncomfortable moments in any horror film I have ever seen.” Memory cards unearthed in a remote stretch of the Mojave Desert tell the story of four travelers who vanished during a sun-drenched camping trip. One night, everything changes when the foursome is sent on a...

It may be unfair to refer to filmmaker Takashi Miike as a horror filmmaker, given how prolific he is. Since he first started directing movies in 1991, Miike has accrued 112 directing credits. To save you from doing the math, that averages out to about three and a half films a year. He has made horror movies, yes, including the notable "Audition" in 1999, perhaps his best-known film in the United States. He also directed an episode of "Masters of Horror," as well as "Over Your Dead Body," the original "One Missed Call," the David Lynch-adjacent "Gozu," "Lesson of the Evil," and "As the Gods Will." His polarizing "Visitor Q" might also be considered a horror film depending on your personal interpretation of the premise.
Among those films, however, Miike has also made a superhero film, a partly animated musical, a few historical epics, coming-of-age dramas, and many, many crime movies. One...

Takashi Miike's brand of horror can be described as visceral and deeply disturbing, often verging on lurid depictions of violence and gore. While the prolific Japanese director possesses the gift to tackle a wide range of genres, Miike's horror offerings stand out for their transgressive and (subjectively) taboo subject-matters. His horror series, "Connect," is yet another grisly story that features sadistic killers and perverse truths, but also lacks the telltale gore that characterizes Miike's horror oeuvre. While Miike's "Connect" plates up unsavory themes in a palatable manner, his contribution to the anthology series "Masters of Horror," which was scheduled to air on Showtime in 2006, was ultimately shelved after being considered too extreme for American viewers.
I'm talking about Miike's "Imprint," which follows an American journalist in search of his first love, whose fate might or might not have ended up being horrifying beyond comprehension. Now, Mick Garris put together...

Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities — a marvelous compendium of streaming deadtime stories — emphasizes everything that lures me to horror anthologies. It feels like a reinvention of Showtime’s Masters of Horror, highlighting everything I appreciate about the format. One might balk at calling Cabinet of Curiosities an outright horror anthology, more a miniseries? Still, the decadently morbid and dazzlingly darkened atmosphere under del Toro’s oversight draws rich atmospheric throughlines. Del Toro’s program calls to mind grim grab bags like A Christmas Horror Story, the V/H/S series, Southbound, and all the subgenre classics fans already laud.
If you think horror anthologies are just scattered collections of short-form storytelling and that’s all, consider yourself open to reeducation. Horror anthologies are often maligned because — like other subgenres such as found footage — horror anthologies can become fallback “easy to make” titles. Anthology horror has been a staple of the genre for decades. Gaining popularity in the late 1950s with primetime episodes and evocative storylines on "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" and "The Twilight Zone," these quick morality tales were easily digestible to mainstream audiences. In a time when film and television didn't yet have a complete stranglehold on pop culture, anthologies still retained the feeling of reading a collection of short stories. Many of the episodes were based on terrifying yarns penned by acclaimed authors such as Roald Dahl and Richard Matheson, resulting in some of the most memorable episodes like "Man From the South" starring Steve McQueen and the monster on a plane classic "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" featuring a very young, very paranoid William Shatner.

John Carpenter planned "Halloween" to be an anthology series, but the relative failure of "Halloween III: Season of the Witch" put the kibosh on those plans. Instead, the series reintroduced classic antagonist Michael Myers, Carpenter's involvement lapsed until 2018's "Halloween," and "Season of the Witch" had to settle for being a cult classic.

In a 2022 interview with Vulture, Carpenter recalls how this loose trilogy was not something he planned, but instead a career arc that happened...
