General Douglas MacArthur was an amazing and complex man--and a man with some obvious flaws in hindsight. "The American Experience" attempts to give a good telling of his life--accentuating both his great strengths and weaknesses in the process. This is nice because too often, biographies of the man have seemed to emphasize his arrogance and flawed character--and failed to give a balanced look at the man. While many of the interviewees clearly indicate that MacArthur was, at times, a jerk, there also were lots of interviews to the contrary--extolling his skills and humanity--especially his humanity. As a result, I was very impressed and cannot recommend the film enough--especially since it is so long and exquisitely detailed. This is NOT some one hour show but follows him through his life from start to finish. The only odd thing about all this is that, inexplicably, MacArthur's famous speech in which he uttered the famous '...old soldiers never die..." is never mentioned--and it would have been a nice addition to the discussion of his final years. Still, expertly crafted and sensational.
