Predicting the winner of the Best Documentary Feature Oscar becomes a lot easier on December 17 when the academy announces the 15 films that make the shortlist. Those semi-finalists will be culled from the more than 100 titles that qualified this year for consideration. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Documentary Feature.)
To winnow those down to a manageable number, the academy adds newly eligible documentary feature to a virtual screening room available to all 500-plus members of the documentary branch. While all members are encouraged to watch as many of these as they can, one-fifth of the voters are assigned each title. Each branch member will submit a preferential ballot listing their top 15 choices.
All of these ballots are collated to determine the 15 semi-finalists. Branch members are then encouraged to watch films on that list which they haven’t seen yet before casting another preferential ballot with their top five choices.

We were in attendance for “The Bold Voice of Contemporary Horror” panel at Comic-Con, but, to our surprise, so was In A Violent Nature's "Johnny," as part of announcement that a sequel is in the works:
"IFC Films and Shudder, AMC Networks’ premium streaming service for horror, thriller and the supernatural, revealed today a sequel of the critically acclaimed slasher In A Violent Nature is in the early stages of development. The announcement was made during a horror focused panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con with the film’s infamous protagonist “Johnny” making a surprise appearance, scaring up excitement as part of the reveal.
Following In A Violent Nature’s world premiere at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, the film has been praised as a “once-in-a-generation slasher flick” (Rolling Stone) for its “ambitious blend of art house and slaughterhouse” (The New York Times) and has been touted as...

Johnny, the bloodthirsty killer of “In a Violent Nature,” is headed back to the woods.
IFC Films and Shudder announced that a sequel for the innovative slasher is in the early stages of development. The news came during the “The Bold Voice of Contemporary Horror” panel at San Diego Comic-Con, where Johnny himself stopped by to freak out the audience.
“In a Violent Nature” largely follows the chaos caused by Johnny, a riff on slasher icons like Jason Voorhees from the “Friday the 13th” series. The camera stays with the killer, traipsing with him through the woods as he searches for his next victims.
“In a Violent Nature” was released theatrically in May and is one of IFC Films’ 10 highest-grossing films of all time. It’s currently still in theaters and on VOD, but will start streaming on Shudder on Friday, Sept. 13. “Nature” is currently sitting at the top of...

The first teaser trailer for The Toxic Avenger remake was released last October. We haven't heard much since then, though reviews from various film festivals have been largely positive.
However, word comes from World of Reel today that filmmaker Macon Blair's movie starring Peter Dinklage is currently considered "unreleasable."
The site claims to have spoken to a producer who says The Toxic Avenger's commercial prospects are too "out there" for any sort of traditional theatrical release, likely explaining why the movie still has no confirmed distributor.
As a result, it's looking increasingly likely that it will have to be offloaded to a streamer or go straight to VOD.
There's been a fair bit of excitement surrounding The Toxic Avenger, so the news it may never see the light of day is deeply troubling. Yes, that's a possibility according to the site. Here's an excerpt from their report:

Director Shinichirō Watanabe is mostly known for his classic anime series Cowboy Bebop, and fans might not know this, but Watanabe has also created the underrated Samurai Champloo. ‘In a Violent Nature’ Director Reveals How His Unique Slasher Was Reshot Almost Entirely [Interview]
Writer/Director Chris Nash’s feature debut, In a Violent Nature, is set to unleash an arthouse twist on the slasher in theaters this Friday, but the journey getting there has been long and arduous. So much so that Nash reshot a large percentage of the film just to get it, and the gory practical effects, just right.
That included a recast of the film’s undead slasher villain, Johnny (Ry Barrett), who is unwittingly summoned when a locket is removed from a collapsed fire tower in the woods that entombs his rotting corpse. That spells terrible news for the campers vacationing in his territory.
Bloody Disgusting spoke with filmmaker Chris Nash and star Ry Barrett ahead of the film’s theatrical release about Johnny’s nature and the tough hurdles in making this unique indie horror film. When In A Violent Nature was first revealed to the world at Sundance, I was giddy with anticipation. As a massive slasher fan, I’ve always wanted a slasher seen through the lens of the killer. There are limitless possibilities and could provide the right spark to reinvent the whole subgenre. At least, that’s what I’ve always believed. But the reaction to the film was mixed, with our own Chris Bumbray giving the film a 6/10. I agree with his assessment, as the film doesn’t entirely come together like I’d want it to. It seems as though the goal was to make a Gus Van Sant film versus to make something that respected and subverted the types of slashers that came before it. Instead, it’s a rather lame affair with more bad acting than you know what to do with.

Writer-director Chris Nash’s feature directorial debut, In a Violent Nature, opens in eerie serenity, with a gorgeously layered image of a forest seen through a deteriorated window frame. Birdsong and gentle breezes take aural precedence, though there are off-screen human voices of an evidently teen-to-twentysomething variety that clash discordantly with all the verdant beauty. The camera eventually tracks laterally, rack-focusing to reveal a locket hanging around a pipe. A hand enters frame, removing the bauble from its perch. Big mistake, as evidenced by the psychotic demon that soon emerges from the peaty earth below.
This is Johnny (Ry Barrett), a hulking, skin-mottled figure so obviously inspired by Friday the 13th’s Jason Voorhees that the hockey-masked undead spree killer could sue for residuals. But Nash and his crew aren’t out to brazenly imitate their forbear so much as affectionately and provocatively rework him and his murderous exploits. The...

After debuting at the Sundance Film Festival in the Midnight section, Chris Nash’s slasher film In a Violent Nature immediately became one of the most buzzed-about horror movies of the year. A clever subversion of the tropes of the genre shot primarily from the killer’s perspective, this is a slow-paced but incredibly eerie horror picture with some absolutely epic kill scenes.

What new perspective can one bring to the horror genre? With his directorial debut, Chris Nash answers this question with a resoundingly brutal and formally fascinating answer. Primarily following a murderer’s steps and slashes through his travels terrorizing those near a remote cabin, the wonderfully Béla Tarr-esque In a Violent Nature sticks to its meticulous conceit and delivers one of the most chilling horror movies I’ve seen in years. Ahead of a May 31 theatrical release from IFC Films, which will be unrated, the new trailer has arrived.

Unlike big-budget blockbusters that often depend on famous faces or explosive (and expensive) set pieces to draw audiences into the theater, the horror genre has been thriving for decades with no-name actors, shoestring budgets, and still pulling in huge profits thanks to a quality idea that audiences want to see. If the characters in the film are more than likely not going to make it to the end credits, there's no need to shell out the dough for a household name when they're just going to be killed off.
Fortunately, horror films also frequently inspire unprovoked reactions from audiences that work better than any marketing campaign ever could. A24 struck gold when audience members were reportedly fainting during preview screenings of "Talk to Me," which certainly helped skyrocket the film's popularity and contributed to it becoming the production company's highest-grossing horror film, ever, even surpassing Ari Aster's "Hereditary."

With Earth Day coming up in a few days, Brian Eno has called on Mother Nature to give David Bowie’s 1995 deep cut “Get Real” a unique twist using environmental sounds. The remix has been released as part of a global music initiative called Sounds Right, which has made Nature an official artist on streaming platforms to raise money for earth conservation.
Thanks to Sounds Right, a share of royalties from any song that credits Nature as an artist will go to EarthPercent, a charity founded by Eno. The organization will then distribute that money to conservation and restoration projects in the world’s “most precious and precarious ecosystems” under the guidance of the Sounds Right Expert Advisory Panel, a group of world-leading biologists, environmental activists, Indigenous People’s representatives, and experts in conservation funding.

Exclusive: Michael MacMillan retired from the world of television 17 years ago. Except, he didn’t.
The Canadian film and TV producer and business exec had made his name as CEO and Chairman of Alliance Atlantis, the company that built the CSI: Crime Scene Investigation franchise into a worldwide phenomenon, before its broadcast unit was sold off in 2007 to Canwest Communications and Goldman Sachs — making a lot of cash and taking a well-earned early retirement.
However, just four years later, he was back to do it all again.
MacMillan launched Blue Ant Media in 2011, originally as a Canadian channel operator, much the same as Alliance Atlantis had operated. However, just like his previous company, network ownership was only a means to an end — owning content was always the real play.
In the 13 years that have followed, Blue Ant has transformed from a channel operator to a content company playing in the international rights ownership game,...

A high-concept horror movie so casual that it sometimes feels like it doesn’t have any concept at all, Chris Nash’s “In a Violent Nature” is an “ambient slasher” that might owe more to the likes of Terrence Malick and Gus Van Sant than it does to Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers — at least until the part when the unstoppable teen-murderer disembowels a female victim and then twists her entire head through the giant hole he’s carved in her stomach.
Told from its killer’s point of view (except when it’s not), this anemic but formally compelling genre exercise strips the whole madman in a mask routine down to its skeleton. It starts, of course, with some doomed kids in the woods, their voices disembodied long before their limbs will get the chance. Nash frames them out in favor of focusing on the gold necklace the characters...

“We went in knowing that we were just following around this slasher character the entire time,” he said of the film, which is set to debut in the...
