Natasha Lyonne is an actress who wears many hats — and she will soon possibly add feature film director and writer to that oeuvre.
The star of His Three Daughters, opposite Elizabeth Olsen and Carrie Coon, teased in a recent interview with the New York Times that she is working on her first movie, which she wrote and expects to helm soon. She is hopeful for the project’s timeline, especially “if we can just get me a second or third self,” she said in jest.
While the Poker Face actress, who is currently filming Season 2 of the Rian Johnson sleuth series, was reticent to share details about the pic’s synopsis, she revealed: “If you’re a dog person, then you’re going to love it, because it plays with time, just like dog years do.” (The veteran actress has a 14-year-old dog named Rootbeer.

In recent years, Sydney Sweeney has quickly become a household name. Ever since her stint in HBO’s 2019 show, Euphoria, the actress has bagged numerous other roles. From rom-coms like Anyone But You to action-packed superhero films like Madame Web, she has done it all. It would be completely understandable that Ron Howard, having directed more than two dozen genre-tripping films spanning six decades, would want to shake things up a bit by jumping into something outside his proven comfort zone. And it would be equally logical that the vehicle to take him there would be a certifiably bizarre but true account of a 1920s German philosopher who sets up an experimental society with his lover/disciple on a remote island in the Galápagos, only to have it all implode when opportunists come and crash the party.
But despite all the intriguing possibilities of the concept and a game, international cast including Jude Law, Ana de Armas, Vanessa Kirby, Daniel Brühl and Sydney Sweeney, Eden, handed its world premiere at Toronto, never finds its happy place. The prevailing overwrought tone lands more cartoonish than satirical, while a protracted running time accentuates the film’s deficiencies.

Elizabeth Debicki’s first Emmy nomination for “The Crown” is associated with her nearly 16-minute turn in season five’s “Couple 31” installment, which was passed over in favor of a slightly longer performance delivered by Jennifer Coolidge on “The White Lotus.” As the clear frontrunner in the 2024 Best Drama Supporting Actress race, she has submitted a farewell season episode in which she appears for twice as long as before and thus outpaces the screen times of all but two of this year’s 25 other drama regular nominees.
The seven current drama supporting actress contenders submitted performances that last for an average of 17 minutes and 31 seconds, or 32.90% of their single episodes. This data was calculated using a simple definition of stand-alone screen time, which is any time a given performer can be seen on screen or heard off screen. Contiguous moments of silent and non-visible scene time were not counted.

“Patience is a virtue”, they say, and for Marvel fans, it’s practically a superpower. While the cinematic universe has had its fair share of hits and misses—think the underwhelming reception of The Marvels—there remains a flicker of hope. None other than the highly anticipated Fantastic Four: First Steps, slated for a 2025 release.

At face value, you might think a movie about a group of people who leave Europe in the 1930s to go live on the uninhabited Galápagos island of Floreana, simply figuring out life as they go, is just a new twist on a typical survival story. Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby will soon be seen together in Marvel Cinematic Universe’s try at Marvel’s first family in the film, The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Since they are all set to bring Reed Richards and Sue Storm to our screens, it goes without saying that the two actors are spending a lot of time together. While their relationship seems absolutely adorable to many, there will always be some who would stoop down to spreading negativity.

Take the San Diego Comic-Con for example, when Pedro Pascal motioned for Vanessa Kirby to hold his hand, few were quick to assume that the former was using anxiety as an excuse to touch the latter. Thankfully, Vanessa Kirby’s latest words for her co-star are enough to put these Negative Nancys to rest.

Ron Howard has always taken pride in being an eclectic filmmaker — in the last 40 years, he has made movies about mermaids, cocoons, auto factories, astronauts, firefighters, newspapers, beautiful minds, cave rescuers, the Grinch, the Da Vinci Code, the Beatles, and Pavarotti. But at the Toronto Film Festival premiere of his latest movie, “Eden,” he declared that the film stands farther apart from his other work than anything he has ever done. He’s right, though not for the reason he thinks.
“Eden,” which is based on events that unfolded 100 years ago on one of the Galápagós Islands, is a difficult movie to characterize. It’s been labeled as a “thriller,” but I would describe it as a misanthropic survivalist “Robinson Crusoe” meets “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” with deranged footnotes by Friedrich Nietzsche. For Howard, the film sure is different. Yet there’s another word for it — the word is terrible.

On paper, there are few filmmakers who seem less-suited to the rigors of a project like Eden than Ron Howard. This is the grim story, after all, of real-life individuals in the late 1920s who were so troubled by the state of humankind that an escape to the Galápagos Islands seemed like the only sensible way out. This is a tale replete with deception, murder, tooth-extraction, one of the more ridiculous childbirth scenes in cinema, and, in what may be a first for Howard, male frontal nudity. (Though my memory of Cocoon is fuzzy.)
Still, Howard deserves credit for taking on a variety of complex projects along with his more audience-friendly efforts. For every The Da Vinci Code or Solo: A Star Wars Story, there is a Frost/Nixon or Rush. (Let’s leave Hillbilly Elegy out of this.) Eden attempts to combine both styles––grit with triumph of the human spirit.

Dr. Friedrich Ritter (Jude Law) is loathe to repeat anyone else, so when his writer’s block finds him spitting out quotes from bigger, better, far more well-known philosophers, he knows things are going badly. Things have, in fact, been going badly for a very long time, as is prone to happen when someone moves to an uninhabited island and attempts to carve out a new world order. Still, had Friedrich — a very real person — been a bit more comfortable with the idea of repeating someone else, he likely would have found plenty of comfort in Jean-Paul Sartre’s perpetually prescient observation that “Hell is other people.”
Such is the thrust of Ron Howard’s darkly funny “Eden,” a fact-based story that follows what happened after Friedrich and his partner Dora Strauch (Vanessa Kirby) moved to a Galapagos Island after the end of World War I (and the start of...

Toronto film festival: Jude Law, Vanessa Kirby, Sydney Sweeney and Ana de Armas fight for supremacy on a remote island in this 1930s-set true story that descends into tiresomely silly reversals
The films of Ron Howard – usually polite, Oscar-aiming true stories such as A Beautiful Mind or Apollo 13 or solidly made, anonymous IP blockbusters such as The Grinch or The Da Vinci Code – have not shown the director to be someone greatly interested in exploring or even showing much awareness of real, down-to-the-core darkness. His All-American persona, as a well-meaning aw shucks nice guy (who now claims shock upon hearing the subject of his 2020 film Hillbilly Elegy might actually not be such an inspiring figure after all) would not make him seem like the perfect match for a nasty and violent tale of the horrors we’re willing to inflict upon each other to get what we want.

It seems The Fantastic Four: First Steps has taken a break from filming, with star Vanessa Kirby attending the Toronto International Film Festival to promote her new film, Ron Howard's Eden, which also stars Ana de Armas and Sydney Sweeney.
The Mission: Impossible actress - who will play Sue Storm/Invisible Woman in the Marvel Studios reboot - was asked for an update on production on the red carpet of the Eden world premiere, and while she didn't share anything particularly exciting, it sounds like things are going very well and "Marvel's First Family" are all getting on as well as one would hope.
“We love each other so much. I’ve been away from them for two days and I miss them," said Kirby. "We’re having such great time together. I’m really hopeful for the movie and Matt Shakman is amazing and Pedro [Pascal] is heavenly.

Ron Howard had to pause 'Eden' filming to "transport" snakes off the set.The 70-year-old director hired animal experts to look for the reptiles while shooting his latest movie - which is based on a true story and follows three parties who flee post-World War I civilisation to start again on the Galapagos Islands - and occasionally had to stop work in order to get the reptiles moved away from where they were shooting so none of the cast or crew came to any harm.He told Deadline: "We had to deal with animals. We had snake wranglers. And hour before we shot, they came and started looking for the poisonous snakes. And they kept looking all day long and they found a lot of them. "Sometimes we’d have to stop if they were too close, before they could catch them and very humanely transport them to a safe place.

Euphoria‘s Cassie and Nate made a date at TIFF tonight, but like their HBO series characters left off at the end of season, they weren’t in the same building at the same time. That said, actress Sydney Sweeney and actor Jacob Elordi respectively had world premieres going on at the same time with Eden and On Swift Horses.
Known for playing an unhinged guy on Euphoria, Elordi plays a drifter, who initially has a connection with his brother’s wife (played by Daisy Edgar-Jones) before finding true love in Diego Calva’s Henry amid casino poker tables. Meanwhile, Sweeney, isn’t exactly the Euphoria party girl in Eden, but has her fair share of crazy island life ala White Lotus to contend with in the Ron Howard directed survival period thriller. Jude Law doesn’t want to take all the credit.
He delivers one of the many go-for-broke performances in Ron Howard’s star-studded “Eden,” a stranger-than-fiction survival thriller about European settlers who seek new life on a previously uninhabited island in the Galápagos. As the official logline explains, “They believe they’ve found paradise — only to discover that hell is other people.” And yes, it’s actually based on true events.
Though his character of Friedrich Ritter, a doctor living in total isolation with his wife (Vanessa Kirby) before all these other people show up, goes completely nude in one scene of the film, Law insisted he wasn’t the only actor on set to take a creative leap of faith.

Director Ron Howard has always been a fascinating filmmaker. He’s delivered some of the most entertaining American films ever made, like “Apollo 13,” as well as complete and total disasters, like “Hillbilly Elegy.” That makes “Eden,” a solid yet darkly silly historical thriller set on a remote uninhabited island in the Galápagos, such a breath of fresh air. It’s not his greatest work, but it’s still the type of film that you exhale upon seeing as you realize he’s still got some heaters.
Though built around an excellent ensemble cast of Jude Law, Vanessa Kirby and Ana de Armas, it’s Sydney Sweeney who runs away with the whole thing. She doesn’t always give the loudest performance of the bunch, though it’s her subtle looks and a growing agency that turns “Eden” into something more. The Toronto Film Festival premiere of Ron Howard’s “Eden,” a survival thriller starring Sydney Sweeney, Ana de Armas, Vanessa Kirby, Jude Law and Daniel Brühl, was briefly halted due to a “medical emergency” as an attendee was carried out of Roy Thomson Hall on a stretcher.
The 5:45 p.m. screening was interrupted around 7 p.m. as murmurings started to spread around the venue. Then, the lights turned on so staff could attended to the incident, which took place in the orchestra. Meanwhile, Howard and the cast stayed seated in the mezzanine. After a 10 minute delay, the movie resumed around 7: 20 p.m. During a post-screening Q&a, Toronto Film Festival’s CEO Cameron Bailey confirmed the audience member “will be Ok,” prompting the rest of the crowd to applaud.

As the Ron Howard-directed “Eden” made its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, a medical emergency interrupted the screening. The film was stopped to allow for someone to be carried out from the front section of the Roy Thomson Hall venue, near the stage.
Howard was in attendance and introduced the movie, alongside members of the cast, including Sydney Sweeney, Daniel Brühl, Ana de Armas and Jude Law.
The announcer said simply, “We are dealing with a medical emergency,” but without disclosing what had happened. The film was restarted shortly afterward.
The film’s stars play a group of Europeans who put down stakes on a previously uninhabited Galápagos island in the 1930s as part of a quest to reshape and restart society as the world approaches war.
The film’s official logline explains, “They and those who follow them believe they’ve found paradise — only to discover that hell is other people.

Exclusive: It doesn’t happen often, but Ron Howard is here in Toronto today to unveil at the Toronto Film Festival his new film Eden. What’s unusual for the Oscar winner whose films have grossed billions, is that the film is up for grabs for distribution as an acquisition title. Eden might seem a close cousin to his harrowing Thai rescue film Thirteen Lives, but this one has a sinister edge unusual for Howard. Based on a true story, Eden stars Jude Law, Sydney Sweeney, Vanessa Kirby, Daniel Bruehl, Ana de Armas, Toby Wallace and Felix Kammerer as the members of three parties who flee post-wwi civilization to start over and build paradise on the Galapagos Islands. It devolves into a Lord of the Flies battle to survive the elements, and each other. Eden‘s world premiere is set for 5:45 p.m. tonight at Roy Thomson Hall.

The crowds of film sellers and buyers are still rolling into Toronto from Venice and Telluride, but the puck dropped Thursday night on the acquisitions marketplace with the premiere of Nutcrackers.
David Gordon Green has taken a detour from genre to serve up a Ben Stiller-starrer that proved a crowdpleaser in two opening-night showings.
That kind of movie — with promising premises with stars and directors with proven track records — is all over the schedule. There is a lot to like in this 2024 TIFF acquisitions market. But I’ve just come from an L.A. visit and cannot recall as bleak a black cloud hangover from the twin strikes of last year. It will take time for the business to recover, and this caution could factor into the dealmaking. Also on the minds of distributors is how elusive box office has become. There are a lot of characters in Spider-Man’s mythos who need to make an appearance in the MCU. While the films reimagined Mary Jane, there are other staples of Spider-Man’s stories that are yet to make an appearance in the MCU. At this time last year, picketers were walking outside of studio gates, still two months away from resolving Hollywood’s dual strikes. Of the big festivals, the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), with its focus on star-heavy independent projects, was hardest hit by the labor action, with empty red carpets turning much-hyped premieres into damp squibs. Heading into TIFF this year, Hollywood is contending with less uncertainty (M&a and cost-cutting aside) and release calendars have fewer holes as strike-halted productions have started to roll out again, all of which should be good news for dealmakers headed to TIFF.

After all the movie looks all set to be an intense one. It revolves around the story of a Galapagos island and the people who come to inhabit it. Eventually, all of them get embroiled in a conflict for supremacy on the island. While at first glance it does seem like a riveting project, there might be more to the movie than what meets the eye.

US buyers have not been in an adventurous mood as the last few markets will attest. However hope springs eternal and acquisitions teams will be on the hunt at Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) to bulk up pipelines following the Hollywood strikes of 2023.
How theatrical buyers fare against streamers remains to be seen. Financiers and sales agents, many of whom are avowed fans of the theatrical experience, must recoup.
The lure of a worldwide deal with a platform can be hard to resist, and while the North American summer box office rallied well and there are lucrative opportunities for the right theatrical releases,...

While the Toronto International Film Festival won’t officially launch a sales market until 2026, this year kicks off on Thursday with multiple buzzy titles for sale starring the likes of Ben Stiller, Sydney Sweeney, Jude Law and Tom Hiddleston.
Hollywood descends upon the Canadian metropolis for starry world premieres and the unofficial start of awards season. But for years now TIFF has also been a place of serious business. Last year the Glen Powell rom-com “Hit Man” sold to Netflix for $20 million at the festival after a raucous screening.
“They’ve very much shaped this festival with a sales environment in mind,” Intrepid Pictures CEO Trevor Macy told TheWrap as he prepared to head to TIFF with the Hiddleston-fronted Stephen King adaptation “The Life of Chuck,” from writer/director Mike Flanagan. “It seems like buyers are showing up in force.”
And to prove his point, Sony Classics scooped up “Jane...

Last month, we got a first look at The Thing on the set of The Fantastic Four: First Steps. A stunt performer was spotted wearing an actual costume as the Ever-Lovin' Blue-Eyed Ben Grimm, leading to speculation the hero might be a primarily practical creation.
Many of you argued that this Thing was being used for reference, something that seemed likely given Ebon Moss-Bachrach's past comments he'd be donning a motion-capture suit like the one worn by Mark Ruffalo in the Avengers movies.
Now, the Andor star has been spotted heading to set in London, England and, yes, he is indeed decked out in a MoCap costume. This should allay any fears about Moss-Bachrach only being on hand for a voice performance in Marvel Studios' Fantastic Four reboot.
"In the past, I think they’ve done a suit. Michael Chiklis wore a suit that apparently was really uncomfortable, and it’s kind of.
