Manorathangal (Mindspace), an anthology series in Malayalam, is an assortment of nine segments, by nine different directors, based on the short stories by the literary giant, Mt Vasudevan Nair, who has also written each of them. Veteran actor, Kamal Hasan, introduces us to each of these stories that capture the depth of human relationships, the clash between tradition and modernity, and the poignancy of life’s fleeting moments. In the introduction, Hasan informs us that the Malayalam film Kanyakumari (1974), which was written by Nair, played a crucial role in his career. While adapting each of the stories for the screen, the period in each of them has not been altered from the original text. It is a creative choice that preserves the authenticity of Nair’s work, and enhances the nostalgic essence of the narrative, and temporal nuances as they were originally intended. But barring a few of the stories,...

ReviewAs far as the horror fantasy genre is concerned, Nirmal Sahadev’s ‘Kumari’ is a significant leap for Malayalam cinema.Lakshmi PriyaAishwarya Lekshmi as the titular KumariSomething diabolical looms in the air of Kanhirangat, a quaint village of an undated time, lying beyond the misty peaks of Illymala. That land is cursed, some caution Kumari, as she succumbs to her adoptive family’s pressure to get married to the younger son of a feudal family in the faraway village. Eventually, as she begins a new life at her husband’s ancestral home, a sense of foreboding gradually overwhelms the eponymous protagonist (Aishwarya Lekshmi). Unbeknownst to her, Kanhirangat has long been awaiting her arrival. Kumari is only the second directorial venture of filmmaker Nirmal Sahadev. After the Prithviraj Sukumaran-starrer Ranam, which tells the story of a mysterious getaway driver trapped in a life of crime in Detroit, Nirmal now takes...

With two back-to-back releases this month (Padma and Kuri), we managed to get a telephonic interview with Surabhy after much persuasion. Following a cautionary note that I shouldn’t ask her any “regular questions”, we launched into a conversation. You have a BA degree in Bharatanatyam and an MPhil in Performing Arts.

InterviewThe theatre and film actor won the Kerala State award for her performance in the film ‘Biriyaani’, dedicates it to Pk Rosy.CrisThe sound of an apple bite comes through the phone as she picks up an afternoon call. In 24 hours, Kani Kusruti has hardly eaten. There has not been a moment to think about the Kerala State Award she’s won the day before – for best female actor. Biriyaani, the film that won her the award, comes about 20 years after she began acting. That first time had been on a stage, when she was a school going teenager. There have been hundreds of stages after that, and much less frequently, a film. “Something I missed telling in interviews is about the many theatre actors who have always taken acting so seriously. These are people who have gone to acting schools, trained themselves and dedicated whole lives to acting. The award is definitely a motivation.

MollywoodTovino Thomas plays a teenager and an irresponsible adult equally well in ‘Theevandi’, but the film takes an easy route to portraying a smoker's struggle. Sowmya RajendranTovino Thomas seems to be determined to prove his versatility with every film he signs. In debut director Fellini Tp's Theevandi (written by Vini Vishwa Lal), he goes from high school boy with a funky haircut and baby skin to a bearded, irresponsible adult – and never for a moment is he unconvincing. The script, though, doesn't match up to the performer it has on board. Theevandi is about a chain smoker. When Bineesh (Tovino) is born, the midwife believes it is a stillbirth. But his chain-smoking uncle (Sudheesh) blows a few puffs on the newborn's face and the baby cries at last. It's not a particularly creative beginning and we've seen one too many films with such an 'origin' story to explain a character's behaviour.

MollywoodThe movie, about a jawan, has no connection with 'Yodha', though the title would bring the 1992 film to mind.Digital NativeVeteran actor Sreenivasan, earlier this year, was seen sharing the screen space with his eldest son Vineeth Sreenivasan in Aravindante Athidhikal. And now, the actor has inked a deal to work with his younger son Dhyan Sreenivasan. This will be the first time the two will be sharing screen space. The film, titled Kutty Mama, is directed by Vm Vinu and Sreenivasan plays the title role in it. The director has been quoted by the Times of India as saying, “The movie is about a jawan, his life and certain incidents in the Kargil war that leaves a lasting impact on him. The story is told through humour and is a family entertainer. Sreenivasan and Dhyan play important roles with Durga Krishna of Vimaanam fame being the heroine.” Since the title Kutty Mama would bring to mind the 1992 film Yodha, the director sought to clarify that there is no connection between the two films whatsoever. He said, “No. Sreenivasan plays the jawan called Shekharankutty but everyone in his family and those close to him call him Kutty Mama; hence the title.” The shooting of this film will begin next month and the team is currently busy with the prep work. Interestingly, the film’s camera work will be handled by the director’s son Varun. Achu Rajamoni has been roped in to score music for the film.
