Scott Pilgrim is back, but not in the way anyone expected. The new Netflix animated series “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off” is both a continuation of the “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” story and a complete recontextualization of what transpired, twisting and morphing the source material into something completely new. And who better to do it than the author responsible for creating “Scott Pilgrim” in the first place?
The anime “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off” is created by Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski, and while it begins similarly to “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” a shocking twist at the end of Episode 1 soon takes this story in a different direction.
Edgar Wright, who co-wrote and directed the 2010 film adaptation “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” is involved in this new series as an executive producer and he also helped bring a big piece of the puzzle together: the cast.

In 2118, the Japanese government has enforced a mandatory system known as Sibyl, which uses software to analyze the criminal tendencies and capability of the general public. Along with some unexpected allies, Akane sets out in search of the truth — even if it means confronting life-threatening obstacles along the way.
Back in 2013, Psycho-pass was merely the latest anime series to gain public traction. Ten years later, a franchise comprised of episodes, films, and sub-series has created a long-standing fanbase that only wants more from its favourite characters. It’s hard to know if the Japanese animated fantasy “Jujutsu Kaisen 0” might be a good entry point for anybody who hasn’t already either watched the recent anime series or read its battle shonen manga comic-book source material.
This new feature-length prequel doesn’t deliver much more than what the anime series already has: a satisfying, faithful, and hormonal action-drama about teenage “jujutsu” martial-artist sorcerers/exorcists and their ongoing quest to destroy monstrous sentient curses and cursed objects.
Set about a year before the events depicted in both the anime and the manga, “Jujutsu Kaisen 0” presents a self-contained story about Yuta Okkotsu (voiced by Megumi Ogata in the Japanese-language version), a young jujutsu sorcerer who’s haunted by the cursed spirit of his childhood sweetheart Rika (Kana Hanazawa), who died in a hit-and-run accident shortly after exchanging engagement rings and lovers’ vows with Yuta.

Although there are many videogames based upon anime series, “Gungrave” shows that such inspiration can work both ways, having been adapted from Yasuhiro Nightow’s hit 2002 Playstation title. Created by Nightow (best known for “Trigun”), the 26 episode series originally aired back in 2003, and was directed by Toshiyuki Tsuru, who was the key animator working on “Cowboy Bebop: The Movie”, and who also helmed the third “Naruto” film. Having proved popular both in Japan and in the Us, the action packed, though essentially character driven show now arrives on region 2 DVD via Mvm, handily collected in a complete box set. The series opens, quite literally, with a bang, throwing the viewer without much explanation into a battle, as the hulking Beyond the Grave is revived by a scientist and takes on hordes of strange, ghoulish opponents. As the story progresses, it transpires that his real name is Brandon Heat (voiced by...
