Henry Selick, the director of The Nightmare Before Christmas, says that he has hidden Jack Skellington’s in every one of his films.
The filmmaker recently revealed that he has left Easter Eggs for fans in all of his movies.
“If you look very, very carefully, you might find that there’s some image of Jack in every other film I’ve made. But I can’t legally say that’s true, but it might be true,” Selick said in an interview with GamesRadar+.
The Coraline director pointed fans to a scene from the film, adding, “You might find something in the breakfast.” GamesRadar+ noted the scene from the 2009 film when The Other Mother cracks an egg into a bowl; the yolk has a familiar face.
Other examples include 1996’s James and the Giant Peach, in which the captain of a gang of skeletal pirates looks like Jack and is referred to as Skellington.

A couple months ago, and thirty-nine years after they made the vampire classic Fright Night (watch it Here) together, several members of the film’s cast reunited with writer/director Tom Holland (and were joined by special guests Mark Hamill and Rosario Dawson) for a live reading of the script that will be released as episodes of the podcast Table Read – and in fact, the first part of that reading has already been released. You can find it by clicking over to the Table Read website. A member of the ComicBook.com staff was in attendance at the live reading, and had the chance to talk to Holland and Chris Sarandon, who played the vampire Jerry Dandridge in the film. During the conversation, Sarandon mentioned that he almost passed on Fright Night as soon as he saw the title!

Sidney Lumet was the Oscar-nominated director who proved incredibly prolific during his career, directing over 40 movies in 50 years, from his feature debut “12 Angry Men” (1957) through his cinematic farewell “Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead” (2007). But how many of those titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at 20 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born on June 25, 1924, Lumet got his start as a child actor, appearing in “One Third of a Nation” (1939) when he was 15 years old. After serving during WWII, he quickly began directing Off-Broadway plays before moving into the burgeoning medium of television, where he helmed hundreds of live teleplays. While working on episodes of “Playhouse 90,” “Kraft Theater” and many more, he honed his abilities to shoot quickly and economically.
His turned to movies with “12 Angry Men,” an adaptation of Reginald Rose‘s TV drama about a lone juror (Henry Fonda) holding out during a murder trial.

There’s something in horrors that the genre keeps attracting more and more viewers everyday. Despite all the spooky and creepy stuff, all the screams and psycho scenes, we can say for sure that it’s one of the most popular genres nowadays.
But what the audience appreciates even more is how horrors can be made… fun. Horror comedies have been in trend for a long time now, but they got really upscaled when the world was introduced to Chucky.
In 2021, audiences saw the new show that was a spinoff of the Child's Play movie series created by Don Mancini. It premiered in October 2021 on Syfy and USA Network, and there have already been 3 seasons of the show, which is now as popular as the movie franchise.

Plot: A dutiful damsel agrees to marry a handsome prince, only to find the royal family has recruited her as a sacrifice to repay an ancient debt. Thrown into a cave with a fire-breathing dragon, she must rely on her wits and will to survive.
Review: The idea of the anti-fairy tale is nothing new. From the grounded Cinderella tale Ever After starring Drew Barrymore to the John Wick-inspired The Princess starring Joey King, outdated stories of helpless maidens needing to be rescued by Prince Charming have lost their appeal in recent years. With empowerment narratives sometimes going too far in the opposite direction, striking a balance between good storytelling without archaic stereotypes is a tricky endeavor. While Disney has tried to flip the script with animated projects like Frozen or the live-action Maleficent, Netflix has delivered an update to the age-old stories of dragons, royalty, and knights with their dark fantasy Damsel.

Ah, the 1990s. Perhaps the peak of the moviegoing experience. Theaters consistently showed classics such as the special effects marvel "Jurassic Park," "The Shawshank Redemption," "Terminator 2: Judgment Day," "Pulp Fiction," "Fargo," and "Titanic." The decade also featured an abundance of outstanding horror films like "The Sixth Sense," "Scream," "Misery," and "Interview with the Vampire," all boasting big-name stars and top-tier directors.
However, playing at the opposite end of the cineplex were thrillers you may have never heard about or skipped simply due to bad reviews or scathing word of mouth. Some of Hollywood's top talent attached themselves to such projects, thwarted by ornery critics or moviegoers seeking higher-end entertainment. That's a shame.
While there are undoubtedly plenty of terrible horror films from the 90s, the decade was also ripe with lower-tier entries that have aged surprisingly well. Many don't reset the bar established by esteemed pictures like "The Silence of the Lambs,...

Andre Roussimoff, popularly known as Andre the Giant was regarded as ‘the Eighth Wonder of the World’ due to his great size. Although he is mostly known for his contributions to the wrestling world since the World Wide Wrestling Foundation (Wwwf) promoter Vincent McMahon booked him as a ‘special attraction’, he famously played the character of a giant named Fezzik in the 1987 movie The Princess Bride.
Recently, The Princess Bride actress Robin Wright shed some light on her relationship with Andre the Giant, and the incident she recounted from her days on the movie’s set could not be more heartwarming.

Tom Holland's 1988 film "Child's Play" was about a serial killer named Charles Lee Ray (Brad Dourif) who was fatally wounded by a cop (Chris Sarandon) during a shootout in a toy warehouse. As he lay dying, Charles, a.k.a. Chucky, used voodoo magic to shunt his consciousness into a nearby Good Guy doll, a talking plastic child about a foot tall. In the body of the doll, Chucky continues his reign of terror. "Child's Play" was clearly a spoof of the Cabbage Patch Kids phenomenon a few years previous, positing that the year's difficult-to-obtain ultra-hot Christmas toy could possibly contain the soul of a murderer.
To date, there have been six sequels to "Child's Play," a remake, and a spinoff series called "Chucky," which concluded part one of its third season in October of 2023. The series became increasingly wild as it went on, tilting heavily into camp and comedy.

It's that time of year again! You know, the one where we all debate whether or not something is a Christmas movie, like "Die Hard" or "Gremlins." The big one, and the one that I must insist belongs to two holidays — Halloween and Christmas — is 1993's "The Nightmare Before Christmas." I don't see why it can't be both. That said, there are certain parts of the film that seem to fall firmly into one category. That includes when Jack Skellington (Chris Sarandon and Danny Elfman) appears as the Pumpkin King at the beginning of the film and during the song "This Is Halloween."
Jack is cool no matter what outfit he's in, but there is something so delightfully and creepily sinister about him when he's in that guise (since I mostly want to hug him for the rest of the...

Tim Burton loves to make things spooky and morbid, but his favorite holiday might well be Christmas. Look at how many of his films take place during the Yuletide season: "Batman Returns," "Edward Scissorhands," etc. He also conceived of "The Nightmare Before Christmas," which is all about Halloween Town's top ghoul, Jack Skellington (Chris Sarandon), getting Christmas fever. While Burton handed off directing duties of the stop-motion picture to Henry Selick, it's easy to see his fingerprints and why he would empathize with Jack.
David A. Bossert's "Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas Visual Companion" was released this year for the film's 30th anniversary. The book features interviews with the film's crew, from Selick to Art Director Kelly Asbury, where they describe forming the film's distinct visual style — since there were multiple holiday-themed dimensions, they couldn't stick to just one aesthetic.

In a Halloween world where every person is a monster, a vampire, a skeleton, a werewolf, a demon, or a creature that hides under the stairs, who could possibly be a villain? In Henry Selick's 1993 stop-motion animated fantasy "The Nightmare Before Christmas," Jack Skellington is the community's most famous local hero, but he is not a killer. Indeed, Jack seems to be good-hearted (if he had a heart) and secretly longs for romance. The local mad scientist Dr. Finkelstein (William Hickey) can resurrect dead skeletons, but he doesn't want to take lives. Even the two-faced Mayor (Glenn Shadix) is more ineffectual than evil.
The only monster in Halloween Town that truly longs for violence and aches to kill people with his own hands is Oogie Boogie, a.k.a. the Boogeyman (Ken Page). As imagined by the film's designer, Tim Burton, Oogie Boogie is a large, empty-eyed burlap sack full of bugs and snakes.

Tim Burton is clear that a sequel or a reboot of The Nightmare Before Christmas is not happening. In a new interview, the director talks about what he thinks about the idea of the stop-motion film getting a follow-up 30 years after the movie’s debut.
“I’ve done sequels, I’ve done other things, I’ve done reboots, I’ve done all that shit, right? I don’t want that to happen to this. It’s nice that people are maybe interested [in another one], but I’m not,” Burton told Empire.
He continued, “I feel like that old guy who owns a little piece of property and won’t sell to the big power plant that wants to take my land.”
The publication notes that Burton then said in a “grumpy old prospector voice,” “Get off of my land! You pesky little… You ain’t getting this property! I don’t care...

If you were around when "The Nightmare Before Christmas" first opened in theaters, it might freak you out to learn that it's been 30 years since then. The film, adapted from a story by Tim Burton and directed by Henry Selick, tells the musical tale of Jack Skellington, the King of Halloween Town, who is having an emotional crisis. He's looking for something different and new when he comes across doors for other holiday towns. When he visits Christmas Town, he thinks it will be much better than what he has. He returns to Halloween Town and tries to get the spooky residents to embrace Christmas, which they do, but in their own, unique and creepy way.
Elfman, who was the lead vocalist and played rhythm guitar for the band Oingo Boingo at the time, composed the music for the film in just around 30 days.

Unleashed on theaters in 1988, director Tom Holland's "Child's Play" introduced America to Chucky, a My Buddy-like doll inhabited by the soul of a foul-mouthed serial killer. Equal parts absurd and frightening, that first movie spawned six sequels, a remake, and a TV series. Of all the iconic '80s horror villains, he's the only one still written by his original creator, Don Mancini. As such, the TV series has brought back many actors and characters from throughout the franchise's history, in an increasingly complicated -- and refreshingly LGBTQ-positive -- narrative of epic proportions. A narrative that involves Devon Sawa playing multiple roles, for some reason.
Fans of the show know where some of the original film's cast members ended up, but what about the rest? Shot in Chicago, "Child's Play" made use of several local stage talents, as well as a few veteran actors and familiar faces. Can you...

Chucky the killer doll has come back a whole lot of times since we first saw him in the 1988 classic Child’s Play. He has starred in several big screen sequels, a couple direct-to-video sequels, and now he’s three seasons deep into a TV series that runs on both Syfy and USA Network (as well as the Peacock streaming service). As he has made his way through the decades, many of his co-stars have also returned to share the screen with him again and again. But among those who haven’t returned is Chris Sarandon, who played Detective Mike Norris in the original film. During an interview conducted by People to mark the thirty-fifth anniversary of the original Child’s Play, Sarandon revealed that he would be willing to come back for another Chucky project… even though he turned down the chance to appear in Child’s Play 2.

Thirty-five years, seven feature films, and three seasons deep into an ongoing television series haven’t diminished Chucky’s bloodlust in the slightest. That’s no easy feat, even in a genre largely driven by surviving impossible odds and obstacles. With each new entry, Chucky somehow manages to grow even more maniacal and devious, adapting to bizarre new twists that a prolonged voodoo curse throws his way. Of course, that voodoo curse started it all 35 years ago today, when Child’s Play stabbed its way into theaters on November 9, 1988.
While Chucky’s journey continues to surprise through new revelations, characters, and sharp narrative turns, it’s anchored by the killer’s unrelenting pursuit of vengeance and his voodoo origins. That voodoo curse also allows for one of the most notable deaths in the series for its almost meta-levels of doll-on-doll violence.

Based on Tim Burton's 1982 gothic poem, "A Nightmare Before Christmas" has become a seasonal classic that's come close to eclipsing "Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer" and "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" as the quintessential holiday movie. Whether you and your family watch it over Halloween or Christmas (or both), the macabre musical is just as much of a staple during the Fall months as candy corn and eggnog.
Together, stop-motion master Henry Selick ("Coraline"), screenwriter Caroline Thompson ("Edward Scissorhands"), and composer Danny Elfman executed Burton's original vision perfectly, creating a world where each holiday exists within a magical realm unto itself where the inhabitants can celebrate all year round. Originally, Elfman was tasked with writing the songs and music, in addition to voicing lead character Jack Skellington, the so-called "Pumpkin King" of Halloween Town. 30 years after its original release, "The Nightmare Before Christmas" is, once again, doing big business at the box office. The unquestioned multi-holiday classic -- as both a Halloween movie and a Christmas movie -- was re-released by Disney in more than 1,600 theaters over the weekend in honor of its 30th anniversary. Audiences turned up in a big way as the film made its way into the top five on the domestic charts.
Director Henry Selick's "Nightmare Before Christmas" landed at number five on the charts for the weekend with a $4.1 million haul, per The Numbers. That put it ahead of "Saw X" ($3.58 million) and behind "Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie" ($4.45 million), both of which were in their fourth weekends. Meanwhile, the Tim Burton-produced claymation classic originally hit theaters in limited release on October 13, 1993. The movie's running global total now stands at $95.3 million and counting. Depending on how well this re-release goes,...

Henry Selick may believe a “Nightmare Before Christmas” sequel isn’t necessary, but a prequel to the stop-motion animated classic could be worth pursuing.
In a recent interview with People magazine, director Selick shared his idea for a potential prequel as “The Nightmare Before Christmas” turns 30.
“There might be a more interesting story there about how Jack became the King of Halloweentown,” he said.
As for a sequel, Selick explained that the large amount of work isn’t what would deter him from creating a follow-up — rather, he just believes “The Nightmare Before Christmas” is “a perfect movie [that] came out of the perfect time, only to grow into something far bigger over the years.”
“I think Tim [Burton] in particular feels like, why mess with that?” Selick added. “He certainly doesn’t need to make more money from a sequel. He has had so many other successes, and so far nobody...

Whether you watch The Nightmare Before Christmas during Halloween or Christmas time – or, like a sensible person, both – there’s no denying that the stop-motion classic is an essential. And considering the following it has developed in the 30 years since its release, it’s a bit of a surprise that it has never received a sequel. And if a sequel doesn’t do it for you, how about a prequel? After all, that seems to be of more interest to director Henry Selick.
Speaking with People on the occasion of the film’s anniversary – The Nightmare Before Christmas marked its official 30 years last Friday – Selick said, “It might be more interesting to do a prequel…There might be a more interesting story there about how Jack became the King of Halloweentown.” Fortunately, he’s got at least one key cast member on board, as Chris Sarandon – who voiced Jack Skellington – said,...

We’ve talked about Stephen King as the king of horror literature, but there’s another name who is pretty important in the grand scheme of horror. He has had tabletop games, video games, comic book adaptations, and movies made after his work. He has sort of become like John Carpenter in a way. You hear all the time how a movie, or its score in particular, is Carpenter-esque and that has happened to one Howard Phillips Lovecraft. He only lived to 46 and had many works published after his death, but also is the man behind the old gods and the Cthulhu mythos. Even when filmmakers and game designers don’t use creations directly from the author’s work, a lot of horror can be considered Lovecraftian. While some of the more famous ones like Re-Animator and From Beyond are stone cold classics, I wanted to look at an underseen adaptation.

Pete Kozachik, the Oscar-nominated visual effects artist who contributed his stop-motion expertise to such films as The Nightmare Before Christmas, James and the Giant Peach, Corpse Bride and Coraline, has died. He was 72.
Kozachik died peacefully Tuesday in hospice care in his Northern California home of complications from primary progressive aphasia, a rare form of Alzheimer’s, his wife, Katy Moore-Kozachik, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Kozachik also operated a stop-motion camera on Ghostbusters II (1989) and served as director of miniature photography on Starship Troopers (1997) and as a visual effects cameraman on Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones (2002).

While much of the initial fanbase that helped turn Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles into a pop culture phenomenon aged out following the original cartoon (1987-1996) and live action movies (1990-1993), the property has continued to flourish with reboots in TV, film, and comics every few years.
If the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem has you interested in exploring various versions of Tmnt, there’s no better place for a horror fan to start than Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series that aired for five seasons between 2012 and 2017.
While there’s an inherent connection to horror in the various mutants and monsters that pop up throughout the franchise, no rendition embraces the genre nearly as much as this one. In addition to references to classics like Alien, Friday the 13th, and The Evil Dead, the series employed several notable horror actors throughout its 124-episode run.

Celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, Child’s Play is one of the precious few mainstream horror franchises to maintain its original continuity, even overcoming a remake and making the leap to television. A lot of credit is due to Don Mancini, who wrote the original script and has continued to shepherd the series ever since, but there would be no franchise if the first installment wasn’t successful. In that regard, master of horror Tom Holland deserves endless recognition for his direction as well as work on the script.
Child’s Play: A Visual Memoir by Tom Holland is, as its title suggests, a look back at the production through the filmmaker’s eyes. The 152-page hardcover book collects close to 150 behind-the-scenes photos — many of which are previously unreleased — accompanied by Holland’s running commentary plus his original treatment for the film. Sam Raimi is changing up the Evil Dead films. The other films were usually set in the usual places like a cabin in the middle of the woods, a medieval castle, or a retail store’s storage room. This time, the evil Necronomicon is plopped down in the middle of a city, inside an apartment building. This brings an interesting take on the new film Evil Dead Rise. How do you escape the evil when you’re confined to a single apartment? Let’s see if they took some notes from some of the best apartment horror films.
Critters 3 (1991)

Now playing in theaters, Universal’s Renfield uses the original Universal Monsters classic Dracula (1931) as the jumping off point for a brand new adventure, dissecting the not-quite-healthy relationship between Dracula and his loyal servant, R.M. Renfield. But the original Dracula isn’t the only fanged horror classic that Renfield pays loving homage to.
An early scene in Renfield shows Nicolas Cage’s Dracula taking a vaporous form and entering the body of an elderly priest through the mouth, quite literally exploding the priest’s body apart. What you may not have noticed is that the ill-fated priest was played by the star of another classic vampire movie. Yes, that’s William Ragsdale, star of 1985’s Fright Night!

One can only imagine how many times a week someone shouts “As you wish!” at Cary Elwes. The role of Westley from The Princess Bride is easily the signature role of Cary Elwes. But he spent years avoiding any movie featuring a sword and/or a pirate, partly because of the restrictions it put on him as an actor.
“I try to look for roles that push me as an artist,” Elwes told The Independent. “Certainly after The Princess Bride I was offered a ton of medieval comedies. I can’t tell you how many scripts I got where I had to pick up a sword or was a pirate. I turned them all down.” Well, almost all of them. “The only one I was willing to accept was Robin Hood,” he said, citing 1993’s Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Mel Brooks’ parody of the legendary character.

With all due respect to the vampire western Near Dark and the coolness of The Lost Boys, my favorite ’80s vampire flick is pretty easily Fright Night (watch it Here). It has a way about it that is just unmatched. It’s able to mix the ’80s setting, think Jerry in the club hypnotizing Amy, with both a modern and classic feel. Its almost the evolutionary step of what Hammer films would have turned into had they not folded. Its certainly beloved enough with it’s own documentary and a sequel, remake, and sequel to that remake. That’s what I wanted to talk about today. It’s time for a new episode of our Best Horror Party Movies video series, and with this one we’re looking back at a movie that was widely considered to be a disappointment when it was first released back in 1996 – Tales from the Crypt Presents: Bordello of Blood (watch it Here). But while Bordello of Blood may be a step down from its predecessor, Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight, and it may pale in comparison to the similar From Dusk Till Dawn, which was released around the same time, it’s still a movie you can party to. And to find out how we party to Bordello of Blood, check out the video embedded above!
Directed by Gilbert Adler, who wrote the screenplay with A.L. Katz (with Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis receiving story credit), Tales from the Crypt Presents: Bordello of Blood has the following synopsis: After her troublemaking brother,...

One thing we’ve learned about the “Chucky” franchise over the years is that Nothing is off the table, with creator Don Mancini frequently dipping back into the past to tie everything and everyone together into a single franchise universe. Characters including Glen, Glenda, Tiffany, Kyle, and Andy Barclay have all made their returns, much to the delight of longtime fans.
“Chucky” Season 3 was just ordered up for USA and Syfy last week, and it’s coming later this year. In a new chat for the USA Network’s official website, Mancini teases that more legacy characters could be coming in the near future. “I can only say stay tuned,” Mancini teases. “But, you know, of course. There are others, there are potentials on deck. Stay tuned.”
Who hasn’t Don Mancini brought back into the fold, up to this point? Detective Mike Norris (Chris Sarandon) hasn’t appeared in...

"Boys and girls of every age, wouldn't you like to see something strange?"
The opening lines of "The Nightmare Before Christmas" are simple, beckoning its audience as a grinning carnival barker might entreat passers-by to enter the big tent and see the grand show. Here thar be monsters, but that's part of the fun in Henry Selick's stop-motion multi-holiday classic.
The movie is a Frankenstein's creation conjured by Tim Burton, put to page by screenwriter Caroline Thompson, directed by Selick, and taken to musical heaven by Danny Elfman's lyrics and compositions. It's about a man of privilege who tries to appropriate another town's entire culture, all wrapped in a dark fantasy story set within the realms of two highly cool holidays. Jack Skellington, King of Pumpkin Town, finds himself in Christmas town and proceeds to hijack the Christmas holiday itself. There is dismemberment, but not a drop of blood.
