it was amazing
bookshelves: x-end-of-year-review

2017 has been one of my best years for wonderful books – ever. Maybe it’s also because it is my first year in full retirement and thus with more time to spend fully immersed in my reads. However, I also don’t want to take away one tiny bit of praise for the wonderful writing of the majority of the authors I read this year – including several who aren’t with us anymore, but whose work speaks for them so beautifully.

I have read more than 180 books this year so I won’t even try to list them all. In fact, I am going to limit this to books I read this year that I have added to my “All Time Favourites” shelf. There are so many others that I loved to the 5-Star point and beyond, but my “All Time Favourites” shelf holds the ones that moved me in an exceptional way from start to finish.

To be fair, I will list them in alphabetical order:

4 3 2 1, by Paul Auster
4321
A Gentleman in Moscow, by Amor Towles
A Gentleman in Moscow
And There Was Light, by Jacques Lusseyran
And There Was Light: The Extraordinary Memoir of a Blind Hero of the French Resistance in World War II
Benediction, by Kent Haruf
Benediction
By Gaslight, by Steven Price
By Gaslight
Days Without End, by Barry Sebastian
Days Without End
Edgar and Lucy, by Victor Lodato
Edgar and Lucy
Eventide, by Kent Haruf
Eventide
Himself, by Jess Kidd

Homegoing, by Yaa Gyasi
Homegoing
Idaho, by Emily Ruskovich
Idaho
If the Creek Don’t Rise, by Leah Weiss
If The Creek Don't Rise
I Know This Much is True, by Wally Lamb
I Know This Much Is True
Ordinary Grace, by William Kent Krueger
Ordinary Grace
Our Souls at Night, by Kent Haruf
Our Souls at Night
The Goldfinch, by Donna Tartt
The Goldfinch
The Signature of All Things, by Elizabeth Gilbert
The Signature of All Things
The Sport of Kings, by C. E. Morgan
The Sport of Kings
The Weight of Ink, by Rachel Kadish
The Weight of Ink

As I mentioned, there are many, many other books that I also loved in 2017. Thanks to becoming more active earlier this year (after a long hiatus when work and other life events took up the majority of my time) and through so many outstanding reviews by my GoodReads friends, I have been nudged multiple times toward books I would never have known about without this site and the wonderful people who post here.

May your Christmas be filled with happiness and hope, may your Holiday season hold warmth and wonder, and may 2018 be filled with friendships and fantastic books to read . . . along with the best of health and an abundance of all that holds meaning for you.

Thank you so much for your lovely comment, Angela! It doesn't surprise me that you have read and loved 9 of my favourites - it's quite likely that I was inspired in many of them by your own reviews! I'm very much looking forward to the coming year's reading experiences for you, too, my friend - and in the meantime, have a lovely holiday season, too! :)

Jaline Katie wrote: "Love your list, Jaline. And you've been an inspiration all year!"

Aw, Katie - you are so very kind to say so. There are also reviews of yours that inspired me, too - one of the biggest things I love about GoodReads! :)

Jaline Diane wrote: "Isn't retirement just the most wonderful thing?"

At first I was totally lost because I have always identified very strongly with my work. When it was no longer there, I had to figure out, "who am I without a big mission to accomplish every day?" Once I got a handle on that (which comes and goes, to be honest), I find more and more wonder every day in completely marching to my own little drummer. hahaha

Thank you for your wonderful comment, Melissa! I think I forgot one - remember that great discussion we had about The Sport of Kings? Sometimes I just forget to switch the shelves, but I will be fixing that as soon as I respond to folks here. :)
