The fall, witchy vibes are fun, the romance between Scarlett and Nate honestly is what saved this most for me, and I like the magic system and adorable town. But a lot of the book felt like over explaining and random info dumps and less like a well-told story. I wanted to like the sisters more and even wanted to like Scarlett more since a lot of them time she was pretty whiney. Still a cute read though. ...more

I love how much information there is, that I always learn about art and symbology and history and science, even if some things are fabricated for the sake of plot. They’re just a fun adventure ride and this one was no different.
Origin started with a bang and had all the fascinating ingredients that you always find in a Brown book: Robert Langdon, a smart woman who would help him on his journey, interesting art, a murder that lead to a mystery, and a chase across town.
I really enjoyed reading this because it moved at a fast pace, it had art and science and technology, it weaves religion and science, it had AI, and it kept me turning the pages as fast as I could read them. I just HAD to know what the answers to those questions were and how the world in the book would take them.
It turns out the answers were pretty fascinating and not at all what I was expecting which I consider a good thing!
The problem was that as soon as the presentation was revealed and the answers presented it was like the mystery and the plot just deflated like a balloon instead of popping. I was expecting more to happen at the end of the novel. The final reveals didn’t hold as much weight anymore.
Despite that I still enjoyed this book and following Langdon’s latest adventure!

Love the slow and gentle relationship of Ezra, a trans man who can see ghosts, and Jonathan, a widowed gay man, amid all of the emotional complexities of working at a funeral home.
I love how layered this story is: Ezra’s family owns a funeral home, Ezra has been able to see ghosts his whole life, he meets and starts falling for Jonathan whose husband died, and said husband Ben is haunting Ezra’s new apartment. All of this is mentioned in the first few chapters and sucked me in right from the get-go. But what really made me love this story right from the beginning was Ezra himself: he’s kind and selfless and caring and wants what’s best for everyone around him while always emotionally neglecting himself.
Even though I’m Jewish, I learned so much about Jewish funerals and the cleansing rituals. The part where Ezra does the tahara (cleansing of the body) is enlightening and emotional. Even when you’ve lost someone it’s not a part of the funeral rites that you would see so it felt special to be a part of it through Ezra’s eyes.
Overall I loved this book: the romance, the siblings, the friendships, the being able to see ghosts, the ins and outs of having your family own a funeral home, and I even loved how this book emotionally wrecked me over and over!...more

I also like that it felt very timely with everything going on in the world and with the Jewish community, though I wish it didn’t have to be written about, but I’m so glad she did. The slow burn romance between Faye and Greg is realistic and yet so so sexy. This book has so much heart and I can’t wait for Meltzer’s next book! ...more

I love books about mysterious books and doors so this was perfect for me! It’s dark, emotional, awe-inspiring, heartbreaking, fantastical, and so realistic I felt like I was there through it all. I loved following the characters, especially Cassie. She’s all of us — just trying to live her life but wanting more — and then the more drops into her lap and it’s a bit more than she bargained for.
There were a few parts where the book felt like it was longer than it needed to be, but I loved it all the same. By the end, I actually wanted more — to stay with these characters, to find out more about where these books originated from, to see the power of the books. This is a book I’ll be recommending to friends! ...more
