The lack of explanation bugged (pun intended) me with this one. Maggie pointed out that spiders can't grow that big because their structure just doesn't allow for it but there's never any clue as to how they managed it. In the previous books there's always been at least a bit of an explanation. Hope Davies sticks around for the later books but to be honest Wilkins has even less personality than most of the cast and the similarity between "Wiggins" and "Wilkins" keeps confusing my poor eyes so I'd be obliged if he didn't make a return....more

So, Meikle knows virtually nothing about how the military or spec ops work and his understanding of animal behaviour is also pretty non-existant. But he does know how to spin a good yarn. I've read half the S-Squad books in less than a week and I'm gutted that I don't currently have the spare cash to buy the rest of them....more

While there's still plenty of being chased by prehistoric sea creatures and thrilling heroics and being haunted by the past, this book took a weird sharp turn away from b-movie creature feature into a lot of dark psychosexual sh*t.
Most of the acts mentioned in my warnings are recollections and not graphically described but it really left me with the feeling that the white male author was using sexual violence against women as a sensational button to hit. It was not fun to read particularly when it was so completely unexpected.
I found it impossible to enjoy a lot of this book because it made me sick to my stomach.
On the bright side, all the perpetrators die by the end so I'm going to continue reading the series in the hopes that Alten has got this out of his system....more

Gripping and emotional with characters I loved. My main complaint is that the proofreading seems a bit sloppy in places. Sometimes made it hard to tell if strange spellings/phrases were meant to be verbal quirks of the characters or if they were just typos. In general, I really liked it. However, I don't feel all that moved to get hold of the rest of the trilogy. The story feels reasonably complete to me as it is. I might do so, though, if only to revisit some of the characters. ...more

I LOVED the rest of the series. It was all I could think about for about a week while I was reading them and between books. But THIS... It's been a long time since I felt so betrayed by a book. It was fine until about 2/3 of the way through and from that point on I hoped, every time I turned a page, that Katniss was about to wake up and find the last 10/20/30/100 pages had been a dream. The ending is suddenly like a huge rush to the finish line which, when you get there, is so dreadful you wish you hadn't bothered. I honestly wish I'd never read the last 50 pages. I'd be in a much better mood right now. Basically, I think this book deserved another 100 pages so that the ending could have been treated with the care that the rest of the series received. ...more
