This was good I really thoroughly enjoyed it. I feel like this red exactly like a drama including all of the classic k-drama tropes of crazy rich people and very dysfunctional relationships but the couple obviously comes together in the end. I did find that the third Act resolution lasted a little bit too long in this one - I felt like the third Act break up was a bit too early so this book just felt a little bit long. but other than that, I really enjoyed it!

This was actually so ridiculous I'm going to have trouble putting it into words.

This was actually so ridiculous I'm going to have trouble putting it into words.
If you're my friend, you've already heard me talking about this book because, honestly this was pretty fun - the premise is ridiculously campy, but entertaining, the characters are absolutely over the top but they had a lot of chemistry, and overall I had a good time reading it. But, I could NOT get over the actual romance in this so let's break this down (spoilers from here!!)
1. Beat being all like "omg my kink is SO CRAZY it's LIFE RUINING if anyone found out my career would be OVER oh my god its just SO CRAZY" was absolutely ridiculous when it ended up being EDGING. like bro are you kidding me loll maybe I read too much dark romance and fanfic but that's basically foreplay in my mind - him being so ridiculously dramatic about it was insane to me 2. on the other hand with this - I really liked the dynamic with them though! I liked the sub guy, dom girl (kinda) cause we really don't see that much 3. But oh god the aftermath of some of the sex scenes was SO cringey. It was so overly lovey dovey gushy feelings that I physically had to turn off the audiobook or I was gonna puke. And one time, after they have very very normal, very vanilla sex if a LITTLE bit rough with a TINY bit of edging, in Melody's internal monologue she goes "can you even call what we did sex? it was more like... mating" like EW firstly STOP cause it WASN'T - she kept describing it as primal when I was like bro you guys had sex in missionary what are you TALKING ABOUT? but also there was no breeding kink involve shut up - it was so cringey I couldn't handle it 4. It just really felt like the author tried to throw in a kink to mix things up a bit - which I appreciate! but was a kink she does not have/doesn't know ANYTHING about - plus there was far too much riding on this kink, it was ridiculous. It should have been so much more extreme for how many issues it caused 5. also i could not get over these 30 year olds literally admitting feelings for each other, having sex, and then going "oh they don't like me/I need to get over my crush" like YOU LITERALLY BOTH SAID YOU LIKE EACH OTHER WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS
so yeah overall, it was a fun read, but it was also absolutely ridiculous, cringey, and dumb so....more
Okay let me begin by saying I’m one of the people who absolutely ADORES fourth wing - but, I can also be a book reviewer who can take a step b4/5stars
Okay let me begin by saying I’m one of the people who absolutely ADORES fourth wing - but, I can also be a book reviewer who can take a step back and be critical of a book when necessary, hence the 4 stars. Because, simply, this book doesn’t deserve a full 5 from me.
But, let’s begin with the fact that this had almost everything I adored from the first book - i love violet, I love xaden, i love all of our characters, their dynamics, their complex stories and friendships; I love the dragons and the fight sequences and how intricate this world is becoming. Rebecca knows how to write an incredibly captivating, incredibly FUN fantasy book and I really, REALLY enjoyed my time reading it.
That being said, I already went into great detail about those things I adored when I’ve talked about Fourth Wing.
This is Iron Flame.
And, while it had all of those amazing things Fourth Wing did, it doesn’t necessarily have anything NEW for me to love - except Aaric, he’s great, I want more of him tbh.
Don’t get me wrong there were some amazing scenes, amazing reveals, and the ending????????????? Omfg
AND THE SPICY SCENES WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO THOSE WERE FANTASTIC OMFG REBECCA APPLAUSE ALL AROUND GODDAMN
So yes, i loved this, but i also did have quite a few problems with it which i am going to discuss here lol
So SPOILERS AHEAD!
firstly , the most simple reason I didn’t LOVE this book is that it suffered from middle book syndrome. The first book was EXPLOSIVE and fun and amazing learning about everything and all the characters, this one didn’t bring as much new information to the table, and was spending a LOT of time setting up future books. Which, isn’t a problem, but it brought this book down quite a bit. That being said, I felt like not a ton happened in this book. I felt like for about 80% of it, I was on the edge of my seat waiting for something to happen and it just… never did? Or, it was like 2 seconds long. Next, Rebecca was very obviously trying to keep up the whole ‘enemies to lovers’ bit because of the marketing of this series, but the back and forth with violet and xaden of “omg i’m so in love with you but no i’m so mad at you and i hate you even though it doesn’t really make any sense and i’m going to pretend we aren’t together and people don’t know we’re together even though EVERYONE knows” got old pretty quickly for me. I’m really hoping that’s done after this book. The thing that REALLY BOTHERED ME was the fact that ok in book 1 we legit talk the entire book about how menders can’t bring people back to like and thats why her brother couldn’t be brought back and yada yada yada which we knew was false because Brennan came back BUT not everyone fucking knew that so TELL ME WHY WHEN JACK FUCKING BARLOWE WALKS IN, ALIVE, we get like 2 sentences of it and we’ve moved on a paragraph later?? WHY WEREN’T WE SPENDING MORE TIME ON THAT. This is an absolutely massive book, we could have spent a few extra seconds on that moment???? Everyone just accepted it and it was over bye I feel bad saying this cause i feel like she was a lot of people’s fave character in book 1 including me i really loved her but i did not like andarna in this book she was so annoying i don’t care that she was a teenager i was over it so fuckin fast I’m sorry but we all know xaden is OP as fuck already so him suddenly having a second signet and it just so happens to be thE MOST POWERFUL SIGNET OF ALL TIME and the one everyone gets KILLED ON THE SPOT FOR was just…. Yah. no. not it. It felt so forced and SO out of left field. I stg I had no idea where it came from when Violet just SUDDENLY brought it up. I didn’t care for that huge chunk of time we spent with the griffen riders and their like weird parapet journey? It fetl like rebecca wanted more training sequences so did this and it was just ??? boring??? Unnecessary??? Idk why it was even happening like ?? I HATED the girl hate between Sloane, Violet and Cat especially like fighting OVER A MAN???? IN 2023????????? Naur put that shit back in 2012 thanks Varrish was such a boring villain and basically just the Umbridge of this world DAIN GETTING A REDEMPTION ARC WAS A NO FROM ME. i think rebecca already had this book written by the time fourth wing came out so idk if she realized how much we all HATED dain but uh yeah his redemption arc of oh no i didn’t steal your memories oh let me kill this bad guy and translate this book and yippee we’re besties again!! Nope. no thank you. I still hate him. Get that redemption arc AWAY FROM ME.
On that note, i can’t wait for the third book, i need it NOW even though rebecca apparently hasn’t even started writing it though so uh thats great love that:)
If you hated this book or this series leave me alone and go be miserable and mean away from me and my fourth wing friends thank you~~ ...more

SO TELL ME WHY I PICKED UP THIS ONE?
idk if i'm crazy or something but I could have sworn at some point the description for this was different and it wasn't going to just be the same story AGAIN. But, yeah, I can't read the same book 3 times even if its dif POVs and dif characters I just can't. ...more

I quite honestly think I've just grown out of this series. I literally never read YA anymore because I simply don't relate to it as a twenty six year old woman. I'm not saying older adults can't read and enjoy YA or this book specifically. But for me, I think I've just simply grown out of reading about characters who are in high school in college.
I started reading the series when at first came out and absolutely loved, it's one of my favorite series of all time and I even liked the spinach where they're at the summer camp. But I got about 200 pages into this one. And it is far more about Stevie debating how to have sex with David rather than any actual mystery. Which again, that's totally fine, especially for a ya book to explore - but I'm simply not interested.
I love Maureen Johnson though and will definitely be keeping up with her upcoming releases that aren't in this series!...more
The premise of this is great, and on paper the twists should have been good, but something about the pacing or the way 2.5/5stars
Hmm this was... fine.
The premise of this is great, and on paper the twists should have been good, but something about the pacing or the way it was told made everything a bit too obvious and a bit boring for how much of it is action. I think the climax happened for way too long, like the horror/action/climax of this book is probably 60-70% of it and it made the tension nonexistent. And the twist and reveals at the end just felt.. obvious and lackluster.
So, nothing was wrong with this, but it was also very meh for me....more

This was very cute, I loved the rep (there is truly ever identity you can think of in here) and I LOVED the ending. But also this is very much my type of book it completely reminded me of imaginary friend which is one of my favorite books of all time and another one that people really didn't care for. Similarly to imagine a friend we follow a bunch of characters who all are sort of interconnected in this one town and creepy little children and a creepy man come out of the woods on Halloween and haunt the town.
My biggest gripe was that I wish we had learned more about the cunning man and the children and the witch I think that the lower behind them could have been really really cool again like imaginary friend with the villain in that book, but overall it's very entertaining and fun and interesting as well as actually really like the ending and how it went places that was not expecting it to!...more
So, I'm DNFing this, but not because I wasn't enjoying it - but, I could tell that I was going to have problems with it and didn't want iDNF @ 50pages
So, I'm DNFing this, but not because I wasn't enjoying it - but, I could tell that I was going to have problems with it and didn't want it to affect my love of the first one. I was thinking this sequel felt redundant - the first book wraps up so well, I didn't really see a point for another book. And, after reading many reviews, it seems that many others felt the way that I was worried I would feel - that the author wasn't ready to give up these characters and so extended their story too long.
Don't get me wrong, I love extra smut scenes and I like reading about these characters, but authors need to know when a characters story is over. We love Haruka and Nino, but they don't need another book. I felt like the spark from the first book just wasn't here, so I want to save myself the frustration of this sequel and keep the first book as a standalone in my head....more

Reread November 2023: just as wonderful as the first time and now IM PREPARED FOR IRON FLAME TOMORROW!!!
First read june 2023: Wow yah that wow yah uh huh that was a good one wow I'm just wow this is the first book that I've seen booktok blow up and they were right about it
Okay so now that its not the night of binging the ending of this book, let me try to give a real review for it;
I honestly had no idea what to expect from this going into it, I didn't even know the basic plot - only that everyone was absolutely loving it the moment it was released. I don't usually give into the hype, but when I saw it in person at a random Target in New York while I was on vacation I just decided on a whim to grab it (and I'm happy I did since it's sold out everywhere now!)
This author seriously new her audience - because everyone who enjoyed dystopian books back when we were teenagers is now an adult reading smut or high fantasy - so she combined all of those things into one. Idk how to explain that this somehow has the same feeling as Divergent, Hunger Games, Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, and Avatar the Last Airbender all at the same time - but with Dragons and smut! It was both very nostalgic and comfortable but also new and exciting and I loved it.
I adored our characters - Violet somehow reminded me of a combination of Zuko from atla and Tenten from Naruto (please tell me someone else understands that niche combo lol) and I loved the chronic illness rep that came with her character, especially for a disease I've never seen represented before - and Xaden was WOOOO swoon-worthy. I do not have book boyfriends/fall for romance heros easily but Xaden? different story - the blushing and kicking my feet was real.
I do see how people could find the world building messy, we get quite a few info-dumps, and the main character COULD be seen as OP (although, I find her to be more interesting than a lot of OP characters as she ISN'T perfect, she struggles and has to work her ass off to actually accomplish things and continues to struggle with things that other dragon riders don't due to her disability up until the last page. I also love that she never "overcame" her disability/illness like so many books would have her do because of magic. She has to push through her struggles very similarly to people in the real world with the same disease.) And while I can acknowledge that these could be flaws in this book, I just don't care lol
This book was well-paced, action packed, but also truly made you care about characters and every death was shocking and heart breaking (even when bad guy characters died I was SHOOK), there was fun banter and friendship building, there was wonderful chemistry between all of the characters - friendship and relationship wise - and, most importantly, this book was just FUN. There are so few books nowadays that are simply fun, but this one managed to do it.
But yeah, although I usually don't agree with hype, and I definitely never stay up late to read a book as I love my sleep too much - here I am, exhausted from lack of sleep after reading this 600+ page novel in only 3 days, and screaming about a book everyone has already read. Call me a fangirl, but I am here for this....more

I was really excited for this random book I found in a local bookstore, but unfortunately it just fell flat. The cover is beautiful and the premise is so fun (I love stories of spirits/yokai), but the writing really made it all suffer. It was impossible to tell characters apart, there was very little personality, and the 50 pages I read seemed to drag on forever, all paired with very juvenile and scripted dialogue (scripted as in you'd never see that type of dialogue IRL, only maybe in a badly written movie). Which sucks cause the writing DID do amazing at atmosphere, especially the prologue really hooked me and made me excited for the story to come, but ultimately it didn't live up to it....more
