Rise

Rate this book
How far will you go when you have nothing left to lose?

When she lost her soul mate, Caleb, Eve felt like her world had ended. Trapped in the palace, forced to play the part of the happy, patriotic princess of The New America—and the blushing bride of her father's top adviser—Eve's whole life is a lie. The only thing that keeps her going is Caleb's memory, and the revolution he started.

Now, Eve is taking over where Caleb left off. With the help of Moss, an undercover subversive in the King's court, she plots to take down The New America, beginning with the capital, the City of Sand. Will Eve be able to bring about a new, free world when she's called upon to perform the ultimate act of rebellion—killing her father?

In Rise, Eve must choose who to leave behind, who to save, and who to fight as Anna Carey's epic tale of romance and sacrifice in the chilling dystopia of The New America comes to a stunning conclusion.

SPOILERS AHEAD. SPOILERS AHEAD.

I must say, I devoured this series. Luckily, because I started Eve only a few days ago, I didn't have to wait for the next books in the series.

Rise picks up after Eve marries Charles and Caleb is killed. Needless to say, the book was significantly less enjoyable without Caleb in it, which warrants the three star rating. The memories of his times with Eve mentioned throughout the book were not enough to make me feel he had a presence in it. However, .

So, maybe I judge books a little too harshly on their love stories. I can't help it. I'm a teenager, I dream. Suffice to say, the writing was just as great as it had been in the first two books. The character development was great. In particular, I loved Arden and Eve's relationship, not just in the final novel, but in all three. They've both saved each other. And it wasn't rushed, or unrealistic. I felt it was genuine.

I also loved Charles. I loved that he surprised me. You'd think a rich kid working for the king, living in a luxurious city for most of his life, would develop a superiority complex. At first I thought that maybe he was putting up a front to Eve before they got married. He had to have a flaw, right? Maybe he was abusive when she disobeyed, or was actually in love with Clara too (which is sort of what I'd hoped for). In the end, he turned out to be sincere in his feelings for Eve; defending her, protecting her. He was a sensitive character who was hurt by Eve's resistance to how he felt. If I wasn't so in love with Caleb, I would have wanted her to be with Charles.

I'm so happy we got to see Silas and Benny again, although the reunion wasn't quite what I'd hoped. They were two of my favourite characters in Eve , and their goodbye left me in tears. That being said, I did feel some indifferent feelings toward Ruby and Pip. I feel they didn't really move the plot forward. I felt nothing when . I wished we'd seen more of Arden and not so much of them.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this series to anyone. It has great world building, lovable characters, heartbreaking moments. I've grown to really love dystopian novels. It's extremely difficult, jarring even, to read one right after another, as you are ripped out of one world to the next. This series made the transition easy. All three books are quick reads.

On that note, WHAT WAS THAT ENDING?? Again, a lacklustre reunion (UHM NO REUNION WE GET TO SEE). I wanted to see how THERE WASN'T EVEN AN EPILOGUE.

Okay. Just read it.

UPDATE:

I hate to be the person, because an author so rarely picks up a series after it's finished just because the readers want them to, and Anna Carey gave us the epilogue we were all desperate for. But i can't help but be a little disappointed. I said I wanted an epilogue, but I guess what I really wanted was a little more specific. I wanted a reunion. I wanted to Eve to fall into Caleb's arms and cry and kiss him because I'm cheesy like that. The epilogue we got just left me with more questions.

Anna Carey, you're amazing. Thanks for hearing your fans and giving us what we asked for. I just wish it had been a little more satisfying.

I cannot even believe this book was written by the same author who wrote Eve and Once. This book adds next to nothing to the series.

Eve is married to Charles. She's miserable in the palace. She's haunted by memories of Caleb. So when a chance to escape comes along, she gladly takes it, bringing with her many children from one of the boarding schools. Together they set off to find Califa, where the girls will be safe and Eve can forget her past.

The main problem with this book was how irrelevant it was. This book was supposed to be the final in the series, correct? And normally in the last book of a series with a corrupt government, the main goal of the final book is to bring that government down, right? There is a tiny bit of this in the last three or four chapters. The rest was, just like I said, irrelevant. We didn't need another journey somewhere in the last book, unless the journey was to bring down this tyrannical society. And it wasn't! It was the same journey she took in Eve, but without Caleb, so it wasn't even remotely interesting! This book reminded me of Sever, in that you only need to read the last four chapters of the book to finish the series.

The only reason I didn't skip the entire middle of this book was because of my hope for finding Caleb. Several times I wanted to just put the book down and go look for another, but then I wondered if maybe Caleb would show up.
Rise lacked excitement on every level. The group heads for Califa and out of the 16 people, no one dies or gets injured? No Caleb? Only 6-year-old girls for Eve to talk to?! This book got so boring I started hoping for Eve's execution because it would bring excitement to the book!

I really didn't like how Eve was pregnant in this book, either. It felt like an unnecessary touch by the author in an attempt to keep things interesting, but Anna Carey failed miserably at the execution.

This book could have been a novella. It was 199 pages and 170 of those pages were lifeless and boring. And I get to add this book to my list of series that don't have an epilogue...

I mean Eve is a great story . But Caleb and Eve had a deep and invincible love. Why would the ending be so abrupt, lame and incomplete? Why could we not see how the two of them collapsed into each other in the end of this war?

Very disappointing that you put such thought in everything but the most important part of the book Ms. Carey. I think at least you should rewrite and release a new ending.

Eve is determined to end what Caleb has begun and end the reign of his father with Moss helping her and thats the way this book started ...

Many emotions in my chest right now ...

description

This book has touched every part of my heart and has not disillusioned me at all.

I'm excited, it's a beautiful ending that I did not expect. but left me wanting more , ie easily could get out a book more .... and I would love to ! LOL . I almost gave up with my thoughts toward Caleb andPUM! I'm just very very happy :)

I let running a few tears, I could not really restrain myself

Eve is excellent they may be one of the best characters I have read, determined and passionate with a huge growth atra instead of the saga. So many things that she went through. I'm so proud !!

There were sad moments and felt I could not believe how many things happened so fast ... deaths, meetings and tears and laughter, I feel too much !: 3

I'm so glad I decided to read this trilogy, is a true proof that sometimes do not get carried away by the reviews and just go for it, I have loved it! and will miss it so much :(

So many incredible characters so different and lovable in the same parts and some not so lovable but just as amazing !!

Anna Carey thanks for this wonderful world :)

I recommend it a lot !!

For how much I loved the other two in the series, the finale of the Eve trilogy was a major disappointment. Don't get me wrong, the writing was still fantastic and the story so enthralling that once I started in on the ARC (advanced readers copy) I could not put it down and finished in one sitting. However, the ending, the final conclusion and farewell to the trilogy left so much to be desired. It concluded, yes, but it did not leave you feeling like it did. I actually want to cry at how awful the final page was. It was the conclusion and yet it wasn't. To make this trilogy truly amazing, before publication a new ending must be written. Otherwise, it leaves the dedicated reader cold. Add more description. Without it put in, this series in nothing. I cannot say much without spoiling, but PLEASE Ms. Carey for the fans RE-WRITE the ending, make it warmer. Let us SEE it; it is one place in writing the writer should not be bound by the "show don't tell" rule. I want to leave this world of Eve behind with a warm and fuzzy feeling. As it stands right now the ending came to fast. With the fast paced ending there is not enough transition to the end, you leave it feeling dead inside. So before official publication TELL us what the last few paragraphs lead up to, show it in WORDS not vague descriptions. It will make the reader happier, feel more satisfied, and NOT like they wasted their precious time reading something that will never end. If nothing changes, I am sorry I recommended this series to so many people. So, like a broken record I say, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE Ms. Carey, WRITE A DIFFERENT ENDING!! Eve deserves it, you deserve it, the READERS deserve it...Please.

Holy cheese and crackers this book... Before I get into everything let me just say one thing...
WHAT?!?
This book is completely unnecessary. I feel like if ONCE just had a twenty page epilogue we would all be happy. RISE ends on a horrible cliff hanger that honestly makes you want to curl up and cry. So here's a basic synopsis.
Eve is the kings daughter and the king is obsessing over every single thing she does so he goes and kills the one person she truly loves. So Caleb is just gone-- bye bye-- and Eve is all "my life is horrible I'm just going to cry and blah" well then she finds out she's pregnant! With none other then Caleb's baby. (Shock) so the kingdom finds out and she just wants to run away from her really good life with nice food and people who care about her to live in the wilds. Yes, an 18 year old who is pregnant to live on her own and give birth by herself. So she runs away but then decides, you know I owe the girls in the schools a favor so i'll take them from the life they know and bring them to the wilds where everyone is hunting me! Brilliant idea! On the way she discovers her friends from school that she left behind have escaped and so now it a group of about 12 girls in the wild. Long story short Eve decides she has to go kill her father because yolo << just kidding because she thinks he is horrible. So she shoots him and them regrets it. Stupid. The colonies come and save her and the leader of the colonies is none other then Arden. At the end Eve goes to a hospital to look for friends from the dug out where she meet Caleb and finds guess who... Caleb! Even though he was dead. -___- the last sentence is "I'm his wife" referring to Caleb. So she just proposed to herself basically. And that is the end.
WHAT?!?
-Anna Carey I loved EVE and ONCE, but RISE is just pointless in my opinion. It didn't wrap up a series like a final book is supposed too. Disappointed.

No estoy siendo dramática.

Me molestó bastante.

Me siento triste y frustrada. Tanta espera y no valió la espera.

Let me first start by saying that I am sad to see this series end. I have loved both books but when I got this one I was afraid because when a series ends it is always with a heavy heart that I read it. Sometimes it is a hit and sometimes it is not but I have to say that I enjoyed the ending but I really needed more. I still have some questions but that is okay because I plan on re-reading the books all in a row so I can see if I answer my own questions.

In Rise we see that Eve has finally grown up and she is able to see things the way they are. She is hurting because she has lost Caleb and her father has married her off to Charlie her father's top adviser. Is he Caleb no but he does make her happy and they do seem like they can make it work. Caleb was her soul mate but her father had other plans and with all that her father has done to her marrying her was the last draw.

Eve feels like her life is a lie and she is not sure if she can keep going on but then Moss and her decide she will fight the good fight and finish what Caleb has started. The only thing that Eve will have to face is the fact that she will have to kill her father? Will she be able to kill him? Who can she trust? Will she have to leave once she does kill her father? Where will she go? Will Charlie follow her?

This is a great ending to the series and you will be surprised as to who dies and who stays alive and what happens in the end when Eve makes her moves.

OK. So I know I'm joining the bandwagon extremely late but, I needed to rant: AHHHHH, WHAT WAS THAT?!?!? I'm extremely disappointed with the way this book turned out. I mean it wasn't one of the worst books I've read in my life but it had a lot of potential to be something incredible and enjoyable- it wasn't.

**SPOILERS** Read at your own transgression:

Various reasons why I disliked this book:

First of all: The plot. I'm not too sure if it's just me, but I found the plot unenjoyable and repetitive. I found that the majority of the plot was Eve, Beatrice and Clara traveling to Califia (essentially a safe haven for women) along with a few other girls. Which was the EXACT same journey she took in Eve, but instead of the girls it was with Caleb. This lead to me finding the plot rather dull and dry as I felt I had read it all before.
Can someone explain how none of those girls actually got injured or died? (well except for Helene). I also found the fact that as soon as she reached Califia she left for the city again really irritating. Again, WHAT WAS THE POINT OF THE JOURNEY?!?! THE majority of the PLOT was unnecessary and a waste of time and the only part I actually enjoyed was her seeing Benny and Silas- which we didn't even get a lot of.

The second reason was all the deaths. If you've read the book you would know that various people end up dying. I honestly didn't have a problem with this, I mean a revolution's taking place some people are bound to die. My problem was the way the deaths were portrayed. I felt emotionally unattached to all the characters that died and felt that I actually didn't care whether they were dead or alive. This was due to the way the scenes were written, I felt they were extremely rushed and not nearly enough time was spent on them. I also felt that right after the deaths Eve would rush into some other chaotic plan not actually giving us time to grieve or process the death.

Things I actually liked about the book:

Two words: Prince Charles. Despite being raised in the palace walls Charles still always strived to do what was right. He helped Eve in so many ways and actually cared for her, which just melted my heart. He was there for Eve every step of way even though she resented him. He didn't act spoiled, arrogant or mean but was generally a good (and not to mention good-looking) man. All these features made me instantly fall in love with Charles easily making him one of my favourite characters. I ended up realizing that if Caleb was actually dead (which we'll get to later ) I would have been okay with and maybe even liked Eve to end with Charles :)

Another aspect of the book I loved was Arden. Which we also didn't get enough of. I'm gonna try keep this point quick- Arden was by far one of the best characters in the book, and not only that but one of the characters I felt the most emotionally attached to. She develops and changes so much through the trilogy that I just can't help but love her and the strong, independent person she grows into :)

Something I would have also enjoyed about the book if it actually *stayed true* was Caleb's death. Now don't hate me for saying this but I personally would have liked it if Caleb stayed dead. I don't hate Caleb and was actually quite upset when he died. It is very hard for an author to take the hard line of killing of a main character (especially one that was so loved) which is why I loved the decision. It showed us the casualties of such a huge revolution, how no ones immune to death and how you sometimes loose loved ones, but also how life continues and you need to keep moving forward. Well I though all this BEFORE Caleb RAISED FROM THE DEAD! Which brings me to the biggest problem I had with the book.....

THE ENDING:

description

WHAT WAS THAT?!?! So not only did Caleb RESURRECT from the dead but suddenly Eve and Caleb are married? I'm sorry, girl but WHEN was the wedding??? I found Caleb being alive so corny and cliché. I honestly didn't like Anna Carey taking the soft line and the easy way out. And it annoyed me that she couldn't make the tough choice. WHEN SOMEONE DIES AND NO MAGIC EXISTS IN WORLD, THE PERSON SHOULD STAY DEAD. But hey, that just my two scents :)

In the third and final book of the Eve trilogy, Eve has married Charles, her father's advisor, in the wake of Caleb's death. Working with Moss, an undercover rebel against the King, she is asked to kill her own father for the sake of the city's future. But when things go wrong, she faces a life-threatening danger and must flee. Will she ever be able to defeat her father?

I loved the first two books of the Eve trilogy, and this conclusion did not disappoint! I read this almost non-stop from beginning to end, and I did shed a few tears in the last pages.

This book was filled with tension and suspense, I was always worried that Eve would be captured or killed for her betrayals to the King. I cared about all of the characters on Eve's side of the fight, and I hated all of the characters who sided with the King. I found that this was a nice change, with characters being generally completely good or completely evil, with a few exceptions.

The author's writing style was easy to read, the words flowed well and the descriptions were amazing. I felt like I was fighting against the King alongside Eve, like I was in the City with her. I could picture the setting vividly, and the characters practically came to life in my mind. I can definitely say that Anna Carey is one of my favourite authors.

The ending had an awesome twist, and while I admit I actually guessed, and was correct, about what would happen, that didn't change the fact that, to me, it was the perfect ending to this trilogy. While I'm sad to see this series end, I'm very satisfied with the conclusion.

I recommend this series to YA readers and fans of dystopian stories! If you want an amazing trilogy set in the future with some romance, the Eve books are for you.

Another book that I finally got a chance to finish and ....yet I don't want it to end.

I'm going to start off with the ending. The last line of the book is solid and awesome yet there has to be more. Please tell me there will be another book cause it CAN NOT end that way. It just can't. Not after finally finding the answer that I had been searching for and then BAM over? I think not. With that said, the plot is awesome. Totally captivating and riveting, after finishing this book you are utterly hooked.

There wasn't much of a love interest but certainly great friendships form and allies. Things are starting to break and its up to Eve to set things straight. I like that Eve became strong through out the series. In this book she is a fighter. You can tell. She doesn't give up on anything. She is always finding ways to help others and is doing her part to stop all the bad people. I'm amazed of how well Eve came through all of these trials.

Overall, this book is awesome. A thrill ride from start to finish, Rise singles the beginning of the end. An undeniably entertaining story, Rise is a success.

Also, beware of strong opinions. I understand that some people are not going to agree with me and I'm not here to battle you. If you disagree with the way that I feel, I'm not against you, and I feel as though you shouldn't be against me either.

Okay. So this book actually pissed me off. I was HUGELY disappointed at the end.

I feel as though the one, big redeeming thing about this series is the fact that Caleb dies. Eve needs to prove herself as a character and show that she is actually independent and has her own thoughts WHICH she does after Caleb dies. Yay! I was proud of her when she didn't give in to Charles - this showed me that she could use her own brain. The pregnancy part was annoying, and seemed a little overlooked. I kept forgetting about it. I'm glad her father died, because it gave Eve room to create herself. UNTIL Caleb was resurrected. Seriously, this was a huge disappointment and I definitely won't be reading the next book.

I've gotta say, I really like giving books a chance, and I definitely gave this series a chance. But I feel as though Caleb should have STAYED DEAD. Eve's character has now been massively shot down.

I am not an excessively critical reader. I can generally overlook holes in a story when the overall book is good, but this story had more holes in it than swiss cheese. Eve and Once had a few issues that I could easily put aside, but this was just ridiculous. It didn’t even feel like the same author. I expected fireworks. I craved the intense emotional connection that I felt throughout the first 2 books of the series, but felt nothing. There were several moments that I reread paragraphs because I was certain I must have missed something. It just didn’t add up. To kill off so many major characters without giving them a proper farewell is not okay. The journey we are taken on just isn’t believable. I’m not buying it. I can’t even effectively communicate how disappointed I am in this book. The worst part was the ending. It made no sense at all. The series would be better off stopping with Once.

i'm so sad that i'm done reading about eve and her world! i really loved the trilogy and it was great from start to finish. hopefully anna carey will release more books soon!

i did enjoy reading rise very much, it was fast paced and had a lot of plot twists that you don't expect to happen! i still loved reading from eve's pov. what i almost love most about these books (apart from the plot) is that it's so real. everything isn't lovey-dovey or happily ever after, bad things happen and that makes the books so much more realistic!

there was one thing that i did not like about the book; the ending. not that it wasn't a good ending; it was, but i wish it ended differently. i also think that there should have been one more book, just because i want to know what happened to some of the other characters we encountered.

overall i loved this trilogy and i highly recommend all of the books!

Almost 3.5 stars

I liked this better the second time around. The world building is consistently good (same world, but there are never any wavering bits where it's muddy as I've read in some books.) The pacing is well done as Eve continues here quest to help bring down the regime started by --the spoiler is in case you haven't read any of these--don't read the blurbs before reading the first book, Eve because it is a complete spoiler in this trilogy to read any blurb before you've read the book immediately preceding it. I originally read these before I was on any online book sites and so read them one at a time with no spoilers.

Hey, hey, hey you, yeah, you, do you wanna read the same story twice in one series? All you have to do is read Eve and this book. There you go, enjoy.
Eve travels to safety... Again, with a new set of people, with different problems. The girls who are with her are stupid.
It's OK, because I enjoyed the rest of the series.
Hey, pssst, did you think your boyfriend was dead, nah, he came back to life and instantly became your husband. Ridiculous.
I liked the fact she did all this cool stuff while pregnant, as not many authors/books make their heroine pregnant, with a dead baby-daddy.

Okay, this is sad :( I’ve actually found an ending I hated more than REQUIEM – especially the last few pages! Really, the whole book had this detached, unemotional feel to it. Even the deaths and dramatic moments didn’t have an impact on me. I’m not sure what was wrong here!! Seemed like there was no depth to anything in the book--I really didn’t feel an emotional connection to any of it. And many parts of it seemed even more unrealistic and contrived than some of the events that bothered me in the previous two books. Time, events, characters, and relationships were skimmed over and rushed to the point that nothing felt real or substantial here. I never lost myself in this book at all--I just wanted to get through it already and find out what happened in the end. I guess I was happy overall with how the story ended regarding the political environment and the fate of many of the characters, but I thought the entire book could have been much better and the very end was just horrible!

Now, regarding the last few pages of the book: this is the worst ending I think I’ve ever read for a series! But, by the time I got there I was fairly desensitized by the flatness of the story and I found myself shrugging, rolling my eyes, and just thrilled to move on to the next book--I almost couldn’t even muster any outrage at the stupid ending. But, I’ve gotten angrier about it since I finished it. I thought no one could top the disappointing ending of REQUIEM, but Anna Carey has done it!! To stop the story at that point was just salt in a wound--UNBELIEVABLE!! Couldn’t she give us SOMETHING here (after all the blandness and muffled feeling of the rest of the book)?!! Irritating!

I’m not sure this book deserves time spent on a long review, but I’m going to go ahead and mention a few gripes: The lack of emotion/connection between characters and events (), loose ends at the end of the book (), lack of explanations for things that happened (), and, most importantly at the end, too much not seen and left to the imagination (). Finally, I was really bothered that for the most part Eve seemed to have NO concern for ! It was really crazy!! I was glad, however, that my issue from the last book () was addressed and discussed.

Can’t say I’ll be recommending this series to anybody any time soon! Not after an ending like that! It was always kind of a weird series anyway and not my favorite, but it held my interest, I cared about the characters, and I was anxious for the finale. Now I’m left feeling VERY disappointed and regretting the time I’ve wasted reading this! Infuriating!! I wish I could have written this book myself--even I could have given it a better ending than this! And it definitely deserved a MUCH better ending :(

WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

OK, REALLY??????? That ending literally made me scream. I really really really wish she would have given us more. I kind of had that "everything is going to turn out for the good" feeling, so when she learned Caleb was alive I was excited to see what the reunion was going to be like. Especially when she learned he was unable to use his legs and i REALLY wanted to see his reaction when he found out that Eve was pregnant.

I also would have loved to know a little bit about after the baby was born, if it really ended up being a girl and how they lived inside the city.

But all in all, it was a great series, and would totally recommend it to anyone.

I am very annoyed that this is the final book of a "trilogy". If this doesn't become a quartet I will not stick with my rating....because it ends horribly. The book was a fast read, and although some of it felt like a 'same place different day' scenario, the plot did progress and it did have just the right mix of suspense and feel good fiction. But ending it the way that she did was not only cruel but the perfect set-up for another novel. It opened doors instead of closed them. I don't need all ends tied up sweetly, but a cliff hanger this drastic defies the laws of story telling!

I should not have read the synopsis of this book because I haven't read Once yet! I guess I kind of know what happens in the second book now, but I'm still going to read it because I absolutely LOVED Eve! I may wait for a while, though, so after I finish Once I won't have to wait another 9 months to read Rise!

The Sisters Say: Sadly, a great story with a very disappointing ending

Okay….so I’m not even sure where to start with this one. I loved Eve and Once and read them both in one sitting (and back to back). After that horrible cliffhanger in Once, I ran straight to my copy of Rise hoping that all would be revealed and explained. Unfortunately, I was extremely disappointed in the revelations that awaited me in this book. While there was plenty of action and the story was still interesting, it was missing the flare and passion that books 1 and 2 had, and once I was done, I was left in a bitter mood.

Prepare yourself for sadness—I’ll start there. There is heartbreak after heartbreak, loss after loss in this one. This is realistic, but it got to the point where I was wondering what horrible thing is going to happen next? It’s really hard for me to review this one because I don’t want to spoil it, but it’s the spoilers that really disappointed me!

One of the things that really bugged me is that most of the characters we knew and had developed a love for were gone. We had to get to know all new characters, and unfortunately, the love for them just wasn’t there like it was for others. I mean, characters like Arden—show up or are mentioned maybe once or twice while we get to know an entirely new set of girls. I just wasn’t a fan of this, and I wanted Anna to bring back the people that we had watched bleed and care for each other.

I also hated the lack of romance—I understand there is a war going on and there is little time for love, but romance is my favorite part of a book. I like my romance with a side of dystopian, and not the other way around. So, I was frustrated through most of the book because the passion and love were gone, replaced by hatred, fear, and hopelessness.

I will say I was impressed by how much Eve had grown up in this one. No more (extremely) rash decisions. She was entirely focused on survival and saving as many people as she can. She was strong and endearing in her fortitude, and I found myself really admiring her strength. She was placed in the hardest of circumstances, and she didn’t give up. She pushed forward, no matter the pain, and didn’t look back. I was definitely rooting for her the entire way through!
There is a ton of action in this book, and I never did get bored with it. Like I said before, I was more just upset and frustrated with things I can’t name (because of the spoilers). I think some people will like the brokenness of the characters and the revelations, but I think most people will reaction like myself, not feeling satisfied with this final book.

Finally, the things that threw me the most—the ending. I was not a fan. So many important things were left unresolved—who survived, who died, who was punished for their crimes—much of it was just left out in the air. This would be acceptable if there were another book in the series, but there isn’t! So, instead I’m left with an unresolved feeling. The story needed an epilogue, badly; and once you read the ending, you’ll understand why. The final page just kind of hits you in the face, “Wham!” and then its over with no other explanation. There are no words for it…I hate to say this because I loved the first two books, but this one just fell down like 20 flights of stairs, got up, and then fell down 20 more.

I read all 3 of these books in 3 days, and I was all excited to recommend the entire series to my friends—until the ending. Hopefully things will be changed a bit in the final book so that maybe I’ll rethink recommending it.

*My Thoughts*

My I please apologize in advance for this review and hope that it doesn't offend anyone to the point of flagging me because you believe I am being mean spirited towards the author. I am saddened by the fact that a TRILOGY has once again been written in such a way that it has left a bitter taste in my mouth, and NO people, there WILL not be any more books in the TRILOGY after this one so please move on with your lives, and breathe!

In my humble opinion, Rise has one of the WORST. ENDINGS. EVER. and that is saying a lot. If you've followed my reviews over the past several months, you know that I've been in major funk when it comes to reading series finales. This one takes the cake and the cake tastes quite stale. After reading the last line of this book, I need to wash out my mouth with a bar of Listerine or something to get rid of the after taste.

In summary, the ending to Once left Eve believing that Caleb was killed and apparently we are left to believe that as well since he doesn't just jump up and say SURPRISE, I'm alive!! What happens next is almost comical in a way if not predictable in a world where girls are impregnated on purpose by the government to speed up the addition of new citizens, and are told that men are disgusting, awful, rapists, killers, and they don't respect a woman's body or choices. Huh, sounds like a political ad.

Eve's betrothed, Charles Harris, who isn't any sort of dummy despite the fact that he works for the King and has been pushed aside by MOST readers and Eve as a nobody, and knows that Eve has absolutely no feelings whatsoever for him, ends up being more than readers gave him credit for. Charles actions in protecting Eve from the King was honorable in the face of his own painful future if the lie ever got out. Even in Eve's desperate time of need in wanting to finally end the King reign of terror, Charles once again proves his worth and comes through for her.

What of Arden, Pip, and Ruby gentle readers? What does Carey do to tie up their loose ends? I will say that there is some painful news, some interesting news, and some what the hell news regarding the threesome who were last seen in Once after Eve gave Arden the key to escape. I found it interesting that Carey gave Arden such a valuable place in the ending of this series and in the future of this world, while Ruby and Pip who were EVE'S BEST FRIENDS, are left wondering WTF just happened and why were we treated so crappy?

Overall, this trilogy was an interesting ride with Eve as the lead protagonist. I can't say that she's grown as a character since that would be too broad based and half assed to say. I will say that she has some very unemotional reactions to some secondary characters deaths that leave you wondering what the hell is her major malfunction. I will end this blabbering review by saying that you take your own life in your hands if you read this book to the last sentence. Don't say I didn't warn you!

(Source: I own a copy of this book.)
This is book 3 in the ‘Eve’ series.
Eve is married to Charles and told that Caleb is dead. She isn’t about to let this stop her and her plans though – to kill her father, and take down the new America.
Can Eve really take down the new America? Can she save the girls from the schools? And can she ever find happiness again?

This was a great end to the series, and definitely my favourite of the three.

I liked how strong Eve was in this book, and how she tried to take charge and really make a difference. The way she carried on and made the best of things, even in difficult situations was great, and I really liked her attitude and drive.

I liked the storyline in this book, and for me it was my favourite of the series. I found this book to be very different from the first, and although there were a couple of really stupid plot holes lurking, the book was actually a really good read.
There wasn’t a lot of romance in this book, as even though Eve married Charles she wasn’t in love with him, and remained faithful to Caleb, even though he was dead.

The ending was also good, and I was so pleased by what we discovered right at the end – something that I had been hoping for all book! This was pretty predictable really though.
Overall; a good and satisfying end to the series.
8 out of 10.
