To promote their new cookbook, Stephen Colbert and his wife Evie McGee Colbert paid a visit to Today With Hoda & Jenna, where they served up some crab cakes with a healthy dose of shade to go with them.
Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager joined the couple in the Today kitchen to learn how to make one of their favorite dishes from their new cookbook Does This Taste Funny? Recipes Our Family Loves. As Stephen and his wife whipped up the crab cakes, the Today hosts asked them about the types of ingredients they use, from the panko breadcrumbs to the crab.
“Is this just canned crab?” Kotb asked as she dumped it into Colbert’s bowl.
“Uh well, it’s not canned crab,” Stephen hesitantly responded, as Evie joked, “No, nothing but fresh. We went this morning and caught the crabs.”
After joking that they had just caught the crab that morning in the Chesapeake Bay, Colbert took the opportunity to throw some shade at one of Today With Hoda & Jenna‘s competitors in daytime television, Good Morning America.
“We’re not gonna bring canned crab to The Today Show. That’s GMA stuff. GMA is canning crab, Today Show is all fresh,” he announced.
They shared a laugh over the joke until Bush Hager recalled that Stephen once worked at GMA.
“For one paycheck,” his wife noted with a laugh. “That paycheck was really important.”
“I pitched 25 stories in a row and they shot 24 of them down and we shook hands and said, ‘I don’t think this is a good fit,'” he said.
Though he didn’t work on CBS This Morning, Stephen did give a shoutout to the daytime show on his network: “Hey everybody at CBS This Morning, we love you!”
The couple brought a refreshing, yet chaotic, energy to Today. Stephen started drinking early that morning as he shared an espresso martini with the Today hosts during their interview. While the ladies just took a sip, Kotb warned Stephen as she noticed he was really drinking it that it’s a “real” cocktail.
“I know it’s real,” he responded. “They don’t fake things on The Today Show! I’ll take a nap after this.”
