James McAvoy got more than he bargained for when he signed up to appear on The Drew Barrymore Show. Like the Scottish guests who came before him, McAvoy was enlisted by host Drew Barrymore and Ross Mathews in a wacky game of “What’s Under Rossy’s Kilt?”

With Mathews donning some traditional Scottish wear, Barrymore and McAvoy were tasked with guessing what mystery item was hidden under his kilt. If they correctly guessed what it was, a lucky audience member would win a 10-day vacation to Scotland.

Mathews kicked off the game with his first clue: “Though its exact origin is unknown, advertisements for it have been found in newspapers as early as 1892.”

After a couple of questions, the contestants learned that the item was not a liquid or a piece of technology, prompting Mathews’ next hint: The sound of food sizzling on a pan. However, McAvoy thought it sounded more like “rice falling down a pipe,” while Barrymore likened the audio track to a “rain stick.”

“Do you have a rain stick under there, Ross?” Barrymore playfully asked, to which Mathews quipped, “Or am I just happy to see ya?”

The third and final clue revealed that the mystery item shares part of its nickname with Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels.

“Can we eat it? … I will buy you dinner first,” McAvoy joked, while Mathews replied, “Can you eat what’s under my kilt? I’ve been waiting for you to ask that.”

The actor ultimately guessed that Mathews was hiding square sausage, otherwise known as Lorne sausage, under his kilt, which was correct. Instead of eating the freshly prepared sausage off a clean plate, both Barrymore and McAvoy decided to take a bite out of the one that came from under Mathews’ clothing.

“That’s our contribution to the culinary world,” McAvoy concluded.

Something similar happened in a January 2023 episode of The Drew Barrymore Show when Scottish actor Gerard Butler pulled a scotch egg out from under Mathews’ kilt and ate it.

“Very nice,” Butler said as he chowed down. “Can I have another one?”
