Will There Be An ‘Uglies’ Sequel? What We Know About a Possible ‘Pretties’ Movie on Netflix

After you finish watching the Uglies movie on Netflix, your first question will no doubt be: “Is there an Uglies sequel?” Or, maybe if you’re familiar with the books that Uglies is based on: “Will there be a Pretties movie?”

Based on the 2005 novel of the same name by Scott Westerfeld, Uglies—which began streaming on Netflix today—ends on a major cliffhanger. Directed by McG, the movie stars Joey King as Tally, a teenager who lives in a dystopian future where everyone is considered an “Ugly” until they receive beautifying cosmetic surgery when they turn 16. But thanks to her rebellious friend, Shay (Brianne Tju), Tally runs away before her surgery, and realizes that the whole operation is pretty messed up.

We won’t spoil exactly how the movie ends, but let’s just say that the Uglies ending will leaving you dying to know what happens next. Here’s what to know about the Uglies sequel, and what we know about a possible Pretties movie from Netflix.

Is there an Uglies sequel?

There is an Uglies sequel book, yes. You didn’t think author Scott Westerfeld would leave fans on that cliffhanger, did you? The second book in the Uglies series, Pretties, was published just a few months after the first book, in 2005. There is also a third book in the series, Specials, and a fourth book, Extras.

Pretties picks up where Uglies left off, and finds Tally as Pretty, living a carefree, superficial life after her beautifying cosmetic surgery. If you want to find out what happens next, you’ll have to read the book… or hope that Netflix makes a Pretties movie.

Will there be a Pretties movie, or an Uglies 2 movie?

A Pretties movie, aka an Uglies 2 movie, has not yet been green-lit by Netflix at this time. However, in a recent Decider interview with Scott Westerfeld, the author said that both he and Uglies movie director McG are on board to make a second movie.

“I want to do it. I’m pretty sure McG wants to do it,” Westerfeld said, when asked about the possibility of a Pretties movie. But, Westerfeld added, it’s mainly up to Netflix. If the Uglies movie is popular for Netflix, the streamer will be more likely to fund a sequel film.

“Obviously when it comes down to it, with Netflix and the other powers that be, is how many people watch it, how many times,” Westerfeld said. “So, I will leave that up to the viewers to decide.”

Another factor in whether a Pretties movie gets made is the availability of star Joey King, who is also an executive producer on the movie. Thankfully, King’s schedule looks pretty open after the release of Uglies. So if you want to see an Uglies sequel movie, get out there and tell your friends to stream the movie on Netflix.
