To quote The Office for the second time in my Tell Me Lies journey, “Well, well, well. How the turntables.”

That’s what I (and I assume every other Tell Me Lies fan) was thinking after watching the Season 2 premiere and seeing Stephen’s fiancé Lydia, Lucy’s ex-BFF, finally confront her during Bree and Evan’s wedding festivities in 2015. Why? Well, I assumed that when Lydia walked up to Lucy and said, “I can’t do this. I’ve been trying today for Stephen cause I know he wants everyone to be cool, and I just need you to know…” the next words out of her mouth would be along the lines of, “I’m so sorry I got engaged to your ex boyfriend!”

Instead, the tables unexpectedly turned and Lydia told Lucy, “I will never forgive you. For any of it,” implying that Lucy is the one who betrayed her! GASP!

So what the heck did Lucy do to Lydia? How long will it take for Tell Me Lies to tell us what went wrong between the ex-besties? And how in the name of toxicity did Lydia and Stephen start dating in the first place? Buckle up! Season 2 has answers!

What Did Lucy Do To Lydia On Tell Me Lies?

Tell Me Lies is based on a novel by Carola Lovering, which typically means that spoilers to all our burning series questions already exist in the world, but showrunner Meaghan Oppenheimer made major changes to the Tell Me Lies text in Season 1 and is embracing those creative liberties even further in Season 2.

As Oppenheimer told Decider ahead of Tell Me Lies‘ Season 1 finale, the Lydia engagement twist was all her, so you won’t find answers in the book. “It was actually the end of my pitch to Hulu, before they hired me. I was like, ‘And then he shows up with Lydia.’ I was like, ‘Who’s the craziest person he could show up with?'”

Oppenheimer also said that Season 2 will explore unanswered questions like “How did Stephen get together with Lydia? Where did his relationship with Diana go? When was the last time Lucy and Steven actually were together? Because it wasn’t the Hawaiian party.” That means that answers are coming…eventually!

As for now, what did Lucy do to Lydia that’s so unforgivable? We’ll have to keep watching to see what truly prompts their falling out. But based on Season 2’s first two episodes, we have a major hunch as to what led to their inevitable blowout.

Right after Lydia tells Lucy she’ll never forgive her in 2015, Tell Me Lies rewinds to 2008 and shows the besties bonding before Lucy’s sophomore year at Baird College and Lydia’s brother Chris starts there as a freshman. Later in the episode, Lucy and her pals see Chris at a party, and he hits it off with Pippa, who’s still recovering from her Wrigley heartbreak.

It seems like the two could be headed for a sweet romance, but in Episode 2, when the pals are at another party, Diana opens a barricaded door to find Pippa drugged, passed out, and undressed in a bed near a startled Chris, who acts incredibly guilty — “like he got caught doing something,” in Diana’s words.

After Diana and Lucy take Pippa home and ensure she’s safe, she wakes up in the morning with hopes of putting the terrifying night behind her. The show will likely explore the sexual assault storyline, its impact on Pippa and her friends, and Chris’ behavior at Baird in greater depth as Season 2 progresses. So perhaps that’s what causes a rift between Lydia and Lucy?!

When Pippa woke up, Lucy made it clear that even though Chris is her best friend’s brother, she’s there to support her. If Lydia doesn’t believe her and Pippa’s side of the story down the line, Lucy will likely feel betrayed. And Lydia will likely feel betrayed if Lucy doesn’t side with her family.

Ultimately, we’ll have to wait and see how Season 2 unfolds, and as always, how Stephen works his way into the middle of all the drama. Knowing Tell Me Lies, however, lots more twist, turns, and drama must await.

New episodes of Tell Me Lies premiere Wednesdays on Hulu.
