Apple TV+‘s Lady in the Lake came to its dazzling conclusion this week, revealing the truth about who killed Cleo Johnson (Moses Ingram), who killed Tessie Durst (Bianca Belle), and what eventually befell Maddie Morgenstern (Natalie Portman). However now fans of the subversive crime drama probably have one more mystery that needs solving: will there be a Lady in the Lake Season 2?

Based on the best-selling Laura Lippman book of the same name, Lady in the Lake follows the fates of two women living in 1969 Baltimore. Maddie Morgenstern abruptly leaves her seemingly perfect life as an affluent Jewish housewife to pursue her dream of being a journalist. At the same time, she finds herself entangled in two harrowing murder mysteries. The first concerns the abduction and violent murder of a Jewish girl named Tessie Durst. Maddie not only discovers Tessie’s body, but has a secret link to her prominent, respected family. Then, Maddie takes it on herself to solve the murder of Cleo Johnson, a Black woman whose body is also found submerged in water…although Cleo’s death sparks far less outrage than the little girl’s.

Lady in the Lake defies the conventions of the mystery genre by not only making Cleo’s story as prominent as Maddie’s, but also by incorporating radically trippy dream sequences into the mix. The mix of surrealism in a story literally inspired by two real life Baltimore murders helps to upend our expectations of the genre. It also helps brace us for the wild reveal in the show’s final episode.

Will There Be a Lady in the Lake Season 2 on Apple TV+?

Never say never, but it seems highly unlikely that there will be a Lady in the Lake Season 2.

Lady in the Lake was initially envisioned as a limited series and it very neatly wraps up the story of Laura Lippman’s novel in seven episodes. Now, while limited series have returned before — think Big Little Lies, an anthology series like The Horror, or even Shōgun being renewed as an ongoing drama series — there hasn’t been the same level of fervor attached to the inventive Lady in the Lake as with those series.

But who knows? Maybe there’s a plan to do more Lady in the Lake installments either following new “ladies” or the ongoing adventures of Maddie Morgenstern.

When Will Lady in the Lake Season 2 Come Out on Apple TV+?

Assuming Lady in the Lake Season 2 is greenlit tomorrow, the earliest fans could expect to see it would be 2026. That’s based on the fact that Lady in the Lake went into production in Baltimore in 2022. So it takes at least two years to produce a season of the series.
