Maya Rudolph, it looks like we’ve found your new co-star. With the news that Kamala Harris will be choosing Minnesota Governor Tim Walz to be her vice president, the internet has already begun brainstorming who could impersonate the politician on Saturday Night Live, and it looks like Steve Martin has become a frontrunner.

Martin weighed in on his apparent resemblance to Walz in a post on Instagram Threads, joking that Walz may give him a run for his money if he ever turned to comedy.

“I just learned that Tim Walz wants to go on the road with Marty Short,” he wrote, referring to his longtime collaborator and Only Murders in the Building co-star.

Saturday Night Live has not confirmed who will be playing Walz when the show returns this fall, but Martin is a worthy contender. The comedy star has hosted and guest-starred on the show dozens of times throughout the years.

If chosen, Martin will be joining Rudolph, who will be returning to perform her Emmy-winning impersonation of Harris through the 2024 presidential election. It also remains to be seen who will be playing their opponents, Donald Trump and J.D. Vance, when the show returns. SNL‘s James Austin Johnson has impersonated Trump in the past.

Rudolph first debuted her Harris impersonation on SNL in 2019, after which she earned an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series.

Harris announced Tuesday (Aug. 6) that she would be choosing Walz to become her running mate before they made their first joint public appearance at a Philadelphia fundraiser.

“I am proud to announce that I’ve asked @Tim_Walz to be my running mate,” Harris wrote on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. “As a governor, a coach, a teacher, and a veteran, he’s delivered for working families like his. It’s great to have him on the team. Now let’s get to work.”

Harris’ political campaign has been gaining steam since President Biden stepped back from the race in July amid growing calls for him to drop out.

Saturday Night Live returns to NBC Sept. 28.
