As The Bachelorette Season 21 nears Hometown Week the competition grows fierce and the roses mean more than ever.

Jenn Tran kicked things off with 12 men (counting her ex Matthew Rossi) and ended her second rose ceremony of Episode 5 with just seven remaining guys. It’s crunch time, fellas!

After deciding whether or not she wanted to keep her past in the past or allow Matt to join her Bachelorette journey, Jenn went on two romantic one-on-one dates, hosted an unexpectedly messy group date, and recovered from a self-elimination that sent her spiraling.

Curious who got a one-on-one date in Week 5? Who went home during a rose ceremony? Who self eliminated? And what the heck happened with Matt Rossi? We’ve got answers.

Decider’s Bachelorette Season 21, Episode 5 recap is here to break down all the highs, lows, romance, and heartbreak of another week in Auckland, New Zealand.

Rose Ceremony #1 Recap: Goodbye Great Vibes, Hello Matt Rossi

After a dramatic few weeks, Jenn’s group of 11 guys were finally on the same page and in collectively good spirits going into a cocktail party. They toasted to a drama free night ahead, but little did they know, a 12th man was in New Zealand vying for Jenn’s heart: her ex Matthew Rossi.

As Matt suited up, Jenn sat down with her official Season 21 contestants and explained that someone from her past flew to Auckland to profess his love and ask to join their journey. The remaining guys were crushed and felt Matt had an unfair advantage and history with Jenn they couldn’t compete with. After Jenn left to talk to Matt, she started by letting him know how much she appreciated him coming to shoot his shot. (Never a good sign!) Ultimately, she maintained those feelings of confusion from Episode 4 and said she didn’t understand the timing or know that his feelings were that strong prior to her journey. (Almost like her being The Bachelorette‘s factored into his decision! Hmm!) “It’s really now or never. You’re leaving this thing engaged. There’s no flexibility there,” Matt said, attempting to explain the romantic gesture. Next thing we knew, the ex was walking into the lion’s den and addressing Jenn’s 11 boyfriends.

Right before Matt entered the room, Devin made it clear that if Jenn let Matt come on the show it would change everything for him. Don’t worry, Devin. He’s not staying! Matt just popped by to extend his 15 minutes of Bachelorette fame and let the guys know he came here on his own only to be told that Jenn’s future is already in the room. “She feels confident that you guys can offer her something I can’t, and I’m just here to apologize. I’m not here to take anything away from your experience. I wish you all the best. I wish her the best,” he said.

“I think I feel a little defeated. All the growth that she’s had and the journey that she’s been on has changed her and I have to respect that,” the ghost of Jenn’s past told cameras. Goodbye, Matt Rossi. Your wiener dog Kirkland needs you!

After deciding to leave her past in the past, Jenn got back to keeping the main thing the main thing, canceled the cocktail party, jumped straight to the rose ceremony, and sent John M. (this man deserved better!) and Thomas N. (this man deserved to go home weeks ago!) home.

Jenn Tran and Jonathon Johnson‘s One-On-One Date Recap: Another Helicopter Ride

Next up? An invitation for Jonathon to follow Jenn’s lead and face his fear of heights with a helicopter ride. In Episode 5’s first one-on-one date, Jenn was the one doing the comforting as she and Jonathon, a 27-year-old creative director from Los Angeles, flew to a gorgeous vineyard to play hide and seek, snack on some grapes, and embrace their inner child together. During a dip in a hot tub, Jonathon and Jenn bonded over their fear that although the lighthearted, fun part of their relationship was solid they might struggle to connect on a deeper emotional level. The pressure was on at dinner, but Jonathon rose to the challenge.

After admitting that he’s not the best at opening up and has a hard time trusting people, Jonathon shared a past relationship experience with Jenn. He explained that he fell hard and fast for a girl, lived with her for two years, and discussed an engagement and kids, but things took a turn when she started to self-medicate and abuse alcohol. Several challenging months later, the two got into a fight where she questioned Jonathon’s character and called him “abusive” and “manipulative” for questioning her behavior. He said the word still haunt him to this day, but rather than judge him, Jenn said she could relate to him and talked about her own emotionally abusive ex who would regularly gaslight her.

Did Jonathon Get The Rose? Yes! Jenn and Jonathon spent the night opening up to one another and after saying he wanted a rom-com worthy love throughout the day, he got his rom-com worthy moment when Jenn offered him a rose and they shared a romantic kiss in the rain.

The Bachelorette Season 21, Episode 5 Group Date Recap: Farmer Wants A Wife

Jenn and seven (un)lucky guys — Devin, Sam, Marcus, Spencer, Jeremy, Dylan, Austin — got their group date on at a sheep farm where owners and spouses of more than 45 years, Richard and Dianne, attempted to teach them to herd sheep, scoop poop, and remove dingleberries. The pinnacle of romance! When the labor concluded, they dubbed Devin the most promising farmer and he got to spend a bit of alone time with Jenn ahead of the cocktail party.

Normally the guys might have escalated the Devin drama later that night, but despite their lack of “collective intelligence” on the farm, the guys thankfully realize it’s Bachelorette crunch time and every second with Jenn counts. One person who wasn’t sure he had enough time to play catch-up, however, was Austin (one of few Episode 5 men who hadn’t gotten a one-on-one date yet). Ahead of happy hour he came to the realization that he had to go home and told Jenn “You have amazing guys here who are ready to give you everything you deserve. With the way things are going for me on this journey, I don’t think I can do that.” He said he didn’t feel it was fair to continue the journey, and though Jenn respected his decision and hugged him goodbye, once he left, she started overthinking and doubting herself and the process.

“Am I just doing a bad job?” she asked cameras, admitting the late-stage self-elimination frightened her and brought up insecurities that she might not be enough for someone. After breaking down in front of producers, she decided to share her emotions and fears of ending the journey alone with the remaining guys — even though it would break the Bachelorette facade. Thankfully, the guys stepped up to comfort Jenn and reassure her they were there because they saw her as their future wife.

Who Got The Group Date Rose? Since Jenn was in her feels and all the guys were so great, she didn’t feel it was fair to give out a rose yet.

Jenn Tran And Grant Ellis‘ One-On-One Date Recap: Perfectly Imperfect

To close out the dates, Jenn took Grant — a 30-year-old day trader from Houston, Texas — horseback riding in Muriwai and had a rainy “perfectly imperfect” picnic on the beach where they started to dig deeper into their relationship hopes and formative life experiences. At dinner, Grant shared that his father has been an addict for 30 years, and though the experience left him with trust issues, after his dad recently got fired from his job and Grant told him off, his dad called him the following day and checked himself into rehab. He’s a little under two months sober now, and Grant said he’s enjoyed getting to know him all over again.

Jenn told Grant that standing by his dad’s side all those years spoke volumes about him as a person. She opened up about her own challenging relationship history and the two touched on sensitive, serious topics — from racism and sexism to emotional abuse. Grant said he’s on a mission to be the man that his father wasn’t and told Jenn that he appreciates her for speaking up for herself.

Did Grant Get The Rose? Yes! After their relationship moved into the emotional stage Jenn said the conversations she was having with Grant felt like a true partnership.

Rose Ceremony #2 Recap: Who Went Home On The Bachelorette Season 21, Episode 5?

As a refresher, the episode started with Jenn sending home Matt Rossi, John M., and Thomas N. Later on, Austin self-eliminated. So who else went home during Episode 5’s second rose ceremony? Sam M, Devin, Marcus, Jeremy, and Spencer got roses (on top of Jonathon and Grant, who already had them. Jenn said goodbye to Dylan, a 24-year-old medical student from Elk Grove, California.
