John Mulaney and Jimmy Kimmel have both reportedly turned down offers from the Academy to host the 2025 Oscars ceremony.

According to Puck News, Kimmel, who already hosted the Academy Awards four times in recent years, turned down the Academy’s offer to host the ceremony a fifth time, which would have put him among the most frequent Oscars hosts including Johnny Carson and Billy Crystal.

The Academy then reportedly approached Mulaney, who recently became a top contender for the gig after his successful turn hosting the Governor Awards and his well-received variety show Everybody’s in L.A. Puck News reports Mulaney declined the offer due to his schedule, noting the comedian “is already committed to several projects in the winter and spring.”

The outlet also noted that Netflix “will probably” pick up Everybody’s in L.A. for another run, signifying a major career upswing for the comedian.

This means the Academy is on the hunt for a new host.

As Puck News notes, Martin Short and Steve Martin would be worthy contenders, especially if they can bring along Selena Gomez for an Only Murders in the Building reunion. Much like Kimmel, Martin has also become a host that the Academy and ABC can depend on as he’s already hosted three times.

If they can’t settle on one star, it’s also possible that the Academy will have a troupe of comedians hosting, much like they did in 2022 when Regina Hall, Amy Schumer and Wanda Sykes co-hosted the event.

It’s high time to get a new celeb to host the Academy Awards. Kimmel has become a mainstay at the Oscars after having hosted in 2017, 2018, 2023 and 2024. He was even there for that major envelope mix-up that named La La Land Best Picture instead of Moonlight. He may have turned down the offer to host the 2025 Oscars but it’s likely we’ll see him on that stage again in no time.

On the other hand, there is still a chance that Mulaney will one day host the Academy Awards — just not this time.

He has previously expressed interest in the gig, telling The Hollywood Reporter, “Sure, why not? It would be really fun. It’s hosting the Academy Awards. Johnny Carson did that.”

The 2025 Oscars are set to take place March 2, 2025 at the Dolby Theatre.
