Saturday Night Live‘s Beavis and Butt-Head sketch, starring Ryan Gosling and Mikey Day as the iconic cartoon characters, generated a ton of fan buzz. However, the sketch had long been in the works, and could have even featured another celebrity host.

The hit sketch comedy series’ makeup designer Louie Zakarian and hairstylist Jodi Mancuso spoke with The Ankler about the sketch, and revealed that it had first been proposed in 2018.

Zakarian added, “With Jonah Hill.”

Hill, who has hosted the show five times, had hosted the Nov. 3, 2018 episode with musical guest Maggie Rogers.

“Even at that time it was late coming into the show, so there wasn’t a lot of prep time and I wasn’t fully happy with the wigs,” Mancuso explained. “Then I think we tried it again, and again I wasn’t happy with it. So we fully gave up on it, this is not going to happen. Then they pitched it again and I was like, well, we’re going to make this right.”

She said that Day and Streeter Seidell “wanted the same exact wigs as the first time,” but she stood her ground, arguing that they needed “to make them a little more human.”

Zakarian shared that she “made this crazy little bridge that goes into [Day’s] mouth and the first time it didn’t lift his lip up enough.”

“This time I went in and redid it and made it a little more prominent and made it pop a little more,” she added. “Just having his lip have those braces and those teeth exposed, it really did help.”

The bit surrounded a NewsNation interview about the “power and pitfalls of the coming AI revolution,” conducted by anchor Bobbi Moore (Heidi Gardner), who was interviewing M.I.T. Dean of Technology Professor Norman Hemming (Kenan Thompson). However, the interview is interrupted by Beavis and Butt-Head’s hilarious appearance as audience members, which even made Gardner break out into laughter mid-sketch.

Gardner told Vulture that Gosling and Day “were in costume for the earlier rehearsals on Saturday with their wigs and outfits but not the prosthetics,” noting that “the dress rehearsal was when the prosthetics made their debut.” She admittedly “lost it” during the dress rehearsal, and “left the stage a little bit in shock” after breaking during the performance, although she praised the audience’s reception as “so nice.”

Day also reflected on the moment on Late Night with Seth Meyers, noting that “it’s a lot to take in.”

“Heidi said, ‘You didn’t look human,'” he recalled. “‘You looked not of this world.’ And, you know, we’re pretty close, so we make each other laugh pretty easily.”

He also shouted out the work of Mancuso and Zakarian.

Gosling and Day even broke out the costumes once again at the premiere of The Fall Guy a little over two weeks after.
