Exactly 100 years after Gertrude “Trudy” Ederle won her first gold medal at the Olympic Games, Walt Disney Studios is gearing up for the release of Young Woman and the Sea, which follows the competitive swimmer’s story as she becomes the first woman to swim 21 miles across the English Channel. While the movie — which stars Daisy Ridley as Ederle — was originally slated for a Disney+ release, the studio ultimately opted for a limited theatrical release following positive test screenings.

WHERE TO WATCH YOUNG WOMAN AND THE SEA:

Young Woman and the Sea is slated for a limited theatrical release beginning Friday, May 31. You can find a local showing on Fandango. Otherwise, you’ll just have to wait until it becomes available to rent or purchase on digital platforms like Vudu, Apple, YouTube, and Amazon, or becomes available to stream on Disney+. WILL YOUNG WOMAN AND THE SEA BE ON DISNEY PLUS?

UPDATE 7/22/24: A Young Woman and the Sea officially began streaming on Disney+ on Friday, July 19.

While a streaming release date for Young Woman and the Sea has not yet been announced, we can make an educated guess on when the film will come to Disney+. Though there’s no set pattern, many Disney movies stream close to 45 days after their theatrical release, usually on the Friday after. If that’s the case, Young Woman and the Sea could be streaming on Disney+ as early as June 12, 2024, meaning the movie would be out just in time for the 2024 Summer Olympics.

However, other movies like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania were released on Disney+ about 90 days after their theatrical debut. If Young Woman and the Sea follows the same trajectory, it may not join the streaming platform until late August 2024.
