Sunny Hostin wasn’t exactly vibing with Bill Maher on this morning’s episode of The View.

The comedian stopped by the hit daytime talk show to promote his new book, What This Comedian Said Will Shock You. However, he ended up engaging in a small clash with Hostin, who called him out for using the word “woke” in a negative light.

While chatting about politics, Maher claimed that Donald Trump could get elected in 2024 because of the “woke stuff that a lot of people in this country just don’t go for.”

When they came back from the commercial break, Hostin veered away from her original question and asked Maher to explain exactly what he meant by that.

“It struck me that in the first segment, you used the term ‘woke’ and you said that ‘woke’ is what was sort of what’s ruining everything,” she said, to which he fired back, “No, I didn’t say ruining everything. I said that’s why Trump could get reelected.”

Hostin added that she believes the term “woke” has been “co-opted by the right and weaponized and bastardized,” noting that she was “surprised” when Maher used the word since it was initially coined by the Black community to make others aware of social injustices.

“Why is that a bad thing?” she asked, to which Maher replied, “It’s not a bad thing and originally that was absolutely a great thing. Alert to injustice. Who’s not for that? But words do migrate. I’ll use any term you want because maybe that’s a word that’s triggering and so let’s not use that word. I don’t know. Want to call it the super far left?”

However, Hostin suggested that he call it the “super far right,” which only fired Maher up.

“We talked about that,” he said. “I think we agree about the danger of the super far right. I can’t say it enough. I think they are the bigger threat. But don’t tell me that the left hasn’t changed.”

The tension between the duo became even more apparent when Maher attempted to describe the four different “tribes” in American politics, all starting with the “old school liberals” like himself.

“You’ve changed though,” Hostin muttered, while Maher insisted, “I don’t think I have.”

The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
