Apple TV+, I hope you know you can’t leave us hanging after all of that

By “all of that” I’m of course referring to Mark Protosevich’s noir drama Sugar, which stars Colin Farrell as John Sugar, a private investigator who just so happens to be an alien. Yeah. You read that right! He is not of our world, and yet, as Season 1 wraps we have so little info about his home planet, his origins on Earth, or where the sci-fi components of the show are headed.

Though there were subtle signs sprinkled throughout the season, most viewers didn’t realize the extraterrestrial twist until the end of Episode 6, which means they only got to experience two episodes of Sugar with the knowledge that John and his group of fellow observers are from another planet. Thus, we’re going to need more episodes to see where this is all going.

Curious if there will be a Sugar Season 2 on Apple TV+? Wondering if Apple TV+ has canceled or renewed the series already? Read on to see what we know about the future of the unique drama.

Will There Be A Sugar Season 2 On Apple TV+?

As of Sugar‘s Season 1 finale day (Friday, May 17), Apple TV+ had yet to renew the series for a Season 2, but the show hasn’t been canceled either, so there’s still hope for more episodes.

When asked if John Sugar was a role Farrell would like to keep playing, the Sugar star and executive producer told Collider, “God, I’d love that, yeah. We’ll see what happens. It’s almost as democratic as the business gets, I suppose. People get to decide. If they watch and like it, they’ll do another season. And if not, we’ll be on our way, bags packed.”

Regarding whether or not the team had early talks about a potential Season 2, Farrell said, “We were too busy trying to figure this out. Seriously, we didn’t want to. Not that we didn’t want to, but we said, ‘Let’s not because we don’t want to tempt fate.’ It would have been putting the cart before the horse because we were just trying to be active in the assembly of this season.”

As it stood during the May interview, Farrell said, “I have no clue” about a Season 2. “We have to see how it’s received, I suppose. I would imagine there’s a world where there’s tons more to explore with the characters.”

While we wait for updates on Sugar‘s future, let’s think about what that future might look like, shall we?

What Could A Sugar Season 2 Look Like?

If you’re in need of a full “Farewell” recap with a detailed breakdown of Sugar‘s Season 1 finale, Decider has you covered. What you really need to know, though, is that Farrell safely returned Olivia Siegel, so he’s free to investigate new cases in the future. Whether he will or not remains to be seen, because after learning Henry was connected to Olivia’s captor and took his missing sister Jen, Sugar vowed to find him no matter how long it takes.

Since Ruby and the rest of the observers (aside from Sugar and Henry) went back to their home planet, it’s unclear if we’ll be seeing more of her in a potential Season 2. But as Sugar searches for Henry, let’s hope the show gives us more insight into, you know, the whole alien thing!

While we wait for more updates on the future of Sugar, Season 1 is now streaming on Apple TV+ for any and all rewatch needs.
