‘Dune: Part Two’ Comes to Digital, But When Will ‘Dune 2’ Stream on Max?

Dune 2 will be available to buy and rent online this week, because not even the biggest of blockbusters are safe from the new model of “premium video-on-demand” rush releases.

The sequel to Denis Villeneuve’s 2021 adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1965 sci-fi novel, Dune: Part Two was a smash hit when it opened wide in theaters on March 1. In just over a month, the movie, which stars Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, has raked in over $667.8 million at the global box office. You may be wondering why, in that case, Warner Bros. would decide to rush Dune 2 to digital platforms after just six weeks in theaters, when it’s still sitting in the top five slot on the weekly box office chart.

But that’s par for the course for most major studios these days. Even box office hits are getting released on “premium” video-on-demand—which is the industry term for charging movie theater prices for an earlier release on digital platforms—after a month in theaters or less. Even Barbie, the most successful film of 2023, was released on digital platforms by Warner Bros. after 13 weeks in theaters. Dune 2 will soon be available to watch at home, but you’ll have to pay a pretty penny to watch it—more, even, than you might pay to watch the movie in theaters. Why pay so much, when Dune 2 will be streaming free on Max soon enough?

Here’s what you should know about how to watch Dune 2 online, and when to expect to see Dune 2 streaming on Max.

Dune: Part Two digital release date:

Dune: Part Two will be released on digital platforms on Tuesday, April 16. Beginning tomorrow, you’ll be able to buy and rent digitally on Amazon Prime, Google Play, Apple TV, Vudu, and more. The price may vary depending on which platform you use to purchase the film, but on Amazon Prime the movie will cost $29.99 to buy, and $24.99 to rent.

The Dune 2 digital release will include bonus content, including the following special features when you buy the film for premium ownership: “Filmbooks: House Corrino,” “Filmbooks: The Reverand Mother,” “Filmbooks: Water,” “Filmbooks: Lisan-al-Gaib,” “An Ensemble for the Ages,” “Chakobsa Training,” “Creating the Fremen World,” “Finding the Worlds of Dune, “Buzz Around the New ‘Thopter,'” “Worm-Riding,” “Becoming Feyd,” “A New Set of Threads,” “Deeper into the Desert: The Sounds of the Dune,” “Inside Dune: The Spice Harvester Attack,” “Inside Dune: Gurney Hallaeck’s Revenge,” and “Inside Dune: The Fight for the Imperial Throne.”

Dune 2 will also be released on 4k UHD, DVD, and Blu-Ray on May 14, and will include the following special features: “Chakobsa Training,” “Creating the Fremen World,” “Finding the Worlds of Dune,” “Buzz Around the New ‘Thopter,'” “Worm-Riding,” “Becoming Feyd,” “A New Set of Threads,” and “Deeper into the Desert: The Sounds of the Dune.”

How to rent Dune 2 online:

Dune 2 will be available to rent on digital platforms like Amazon Prime, Google Play, Apple TV, Vudu, and more, beginning on April 16. The movie will cost $24.99 to rent, and you’ll have 48 hours to watch the movie after hitting “play.”

When will Dune 2 be streaming on Max?

UPDATE 5/14/2024: Dune: Part Two will begin streaming on Max on May 21, 2024. Lisan al Gaib!

The Dune 2 streaming release date on Max has not yet been announced, but we know that Dune: Part Two will be on Max eventually because it is a Warner Bros. movie, and Max is the streaming service owned by Warner Bros. All of the new WB theatrical movies end up streaming on Max, though the wait period has varied by title. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, for example, was released on PVOD one month after opening in theaters, and began streaming on Max about on month after it was released on PVOD.

If Dune 2—which is coming to digital about six weeks after opening in theaters—follows a similar release pattern, you can expect to see Dune 2 on Max around late May 2024, about six weeks after its digital release date.

That said, this is all speculation. There is not yet an official Dune 2 Max release date. If you want to watch Dune 2 right away, you can buy or rent the movie online starting tomorrow.
