Drew Barrymore had all the feels while watching Barbie with her two young daughters. On this morning’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, the actress-turned-talk show host became emotional as she recalled showing her kids the Oscar-nominated flick while chatting with star Simu Liu.

The actor stopped by to promote his new film Arthur the King in which he stars opposite Mark Wahlberg. But, of course, Barrymore had to take a moment to gush over his role as one of the Kens in Greta Gerwig‘s Barbie.

“I love Barbie so much. I love the film. I’ve seen it probably 20-something times now,” she said. “And then I watched it with my daughters, who are gonna be 12 and 10.”

At this point in the interview, Barrymore’s voice started to crack as if she was holding back tears.

“There’s the line of like, ‘We mothers stay still so our daughters can see how far they’ve come and gone,'” she said, becoming choked up. “I just — I was like, oh my god, there’s so much to that film.”

She continued, “And to take a concept like, ‘Here you go, here’s Barbie, now do something with it.’ What you guys did with it is so meaningful and it’s introducing so much thoughtful life experience and the questions we should be asking ourselves in life. And it’s a two-hander. It’s Ken and Barbie. So, thank you.”

Liu noted that the movie taught just as much about masculinity as it did femininity.

“I’ve been saying like, ‘Yes, of course, Barbie is a movie for women. But it’s almost just as important that men watch it and internalize these messages as well,'” he said.

Barrymore agreed, telling her guest that she doesn’t believe in putting “men down to lift women up.” She then pointed to her iconic 2000 flick Charlie’s Angels as an example.

“I was like, ‘We are not going to pretend to be men. We are women. And we love each other. We’re going to talk about dating in the middle of fighting because that’s what girls would do,'” she said. “We’ve got to give respect to both genders and lift each other up.”
