South Korean actor O Yeong-su, who won a Golden Globe for his performance in the breakout Netflix show Squid Game, has been convicted of sexual misconduct after being charged in 2022.

According to Reuters, a South Korean court official said that O received an eight-month prison sentence that will be suspended for two years. In addition, O has been sentenced to participate in forty hours of a sexual violence treatment program.

The actor has denied the allegations and reportedly has plans to appeal the decision.

The alleged sexual harassment, which took place in 2017, involved O inappropriately hugging and kissing the cheek of a young actress he was on tour with for a play.

The actor has one week to appeal the decision before the ruling will be confirmed.

O’s career spans all the way to the 1960s, and Squid Game came as his first international breakthrough success. In the first season, he played a seemingly-innocent elderly man with a brain tumor who turns out to harbor a sinister secret. He won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Miniseries or Television Film, becoming the first South Korean to win the category.

After news broke of the court’s ruling, South Korean women’s rights group Womenlink took to X to express their support of the verdict.

“The defendant resembles other offenders of sexual violence in theatre in the past who tried to cover up their sexual violence as ‘favour’ and ‘friendship,’” their post reads, per Deadline.

O will not be returning for the highly-anticipated second season of Squid Game, which is set to debut on Netflix later this year.

The first season, co-starring Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo, and HoYeon Jung, follows a group of financially struggling individuals competing in a series of deadly games for a lucrative cash prize. It won two Primetime Emmy Awards and became one of the most popular Netflix programs of all time.

Squid Game is now streaming on Netflix.
