The former NFL star appeared in a 2024 Super Bowl ad for FanDuel that shows him preparing to try again. But, this time, he has help from the late Carl Weathers, who recently passed Feb. 2. Seeing Weathers guide Gronkowski on this Rocky-style journey has left many NFL fans in their feelings.
“Gronk better make that kick now. For Carl Weathers,” one viewer tweeted.
The ad shows Weathers picking Gronkowski up as he attempts to walk to Las Vegas, or the “land of second chances,” he calls it. Weathers pulls up in a stylish motorcycle, complete with a sidecar for Gronk to ride along in. “This time you won’t miss,” Weathers promises. “Get in.”
The FanDuel advertisement shows Weathers coaching Gronkowski to become a kicker, not a catcher. The odds are certainly stacked against him – even John Cena is betting against him this year.
FanDuel announced they would be making adjustments to the advertisement after Weathers’ passing.
“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Carl Weathers,” the company recently said in a statement to EW. “Throughout his life, Carl was an iconic talent who had a profound impact on the people he worked with on and off the screen.”
The statement continued, “FanDuel was fortunate to have had an opportunity to work with him during our Super Bowl campaign. We are adjusting our campaign accordingly out of respect for the family during their time of grief.”
Weathers was 76 when he died peacefully in his sleep.
