Comedian, writer, and former Daily Show correspondent Roy Wood Jr. was caught by fans sending a “low” key message to the powers that be who passed him over to be the next Daily Show host during Trevor Noah‘s Emmys acceptance speech tonight — and Wood’s already taken to X to both confirm his subtle plea as well as laugh it off. Eagle-eyed viewers noticed that Wood was mouthing the words, “Please hire a host,” a not-so-subtle jab at the fact that the iconic comedy show has been operating with a revolving door of would-be successors to Noah for almost a year. Wood was once championed by many fans as the obvious next choice, but departed the show in October 2023 amid rumors Hassan Minhaj was close to securing the bag. Of course, Minhaj was ultimately not offered the gig, meaning the future of The Daily Show is still in limbo, even as the team behind the series celebrates this victory lap at the Emmys. Clearly, this must not sit right with Wood…

X (aka Twitter) user Ryan Williams initially caught Wood’s request and shared it with the comment, “We see you @roywoodjr at the #Emmys mouthing “Please hire a hose” during the @Trevornoah Comedy Central acceptance speech.”

The post has since gone so viral as to warrant this quippy response from the comic himself: “chill fam I was trying to do that in the low :joy::joy:

Comedy fans know that Roy Wood Jr. left The Daily Show back in October 2023, after eight years of killing it on the show, and waiting in the wings for Comedy Central to pass the baton to him. According to NPR‘s Eric Deggans, Wood “decided he doesn’t want to be on The Daily Show as a correspondent waiting for someone else to take the top job.”

Or, to put in Wood’s own words, “I can’t come up with Plan B is while still working with Plan A…The job of correspondent…it’s not really one where you can juggle multiple things. [And] I think eight years is a good run.”

Wood was indeed one of many comics who test-drove The Daily Show host’s chair after Trevor Noah’s departure. As a signal of where he stood amongst the show’s fandom, none other than Jon Stewart stopped by to give Wood words of encouragement in a Star Wars-themed sketch. Wood would go on to host last year’s prestigious White House Correspondents Dinner. So he’s definitely got the juice to be television’s next great political comic. But apparently not on The Daily Show…

Wood might be done with The Daily Show, but he’s not finished sharing his opinion on what the show should do next. And his suggestion — that they hire a host already — doesn’t seem all that crazy or comical.
