Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Andre Braugher‘s recent passing took many by surprise.

But the actor’s publicist revealed the cause of death after it was previously reported that his passing was due to a “brief illness.” Variety reports Braugher’s publicist claims he passed away after a brief battle with lung cancer. He had only recently received the diagnosis.

Braugher passed away on Dec. 11 at the age of 61.

He was remembered by many who worked with him throughout his decades-long career across television and film, including many of his Brooklyn Nine-Nine co-stars.

Terry Crews wrote in a statement on social media, “Can’t believe you’re gone so soon. I’m honored to have known you, laughed with you, worked with you and shared 8 glorious years watching your irreplaceable talent. This hurts. You left us too soon.”

Melissa Fumero also honored the late actor on her social media with photos of them on the set of B99 together. “I will remember all the advice you gave me,” she wrote. “I will remember all the times we laughed because your laugh was one of the all time greatest laughs to have ever existed… I really thought I’d see you again.”

Chelsea Peretti also mourned the actor in her own statement, writing that she will “always cherish” that she had the “insane opportunity to be your sidekick.”

Braugher had recently been cast in The Residence, which was reportedly expected to resume production in January after a brief hiatus.

But he is best known for his role as Capt. Raymond Holt on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, for which he earned four Emmy Award nominations during his eight years on the show. His deft knack for comedy quickly made him a fan favorite amidst the star-studded cast.

He had already built an impressive career in television by the end of his career, with other Emmy Award-nominated roles in Homicide: Life on the Street and Thief. He also starred in a number of films such as 1989 war drama Glory and Spike Lee’s Get on the Bus.

Braugher is survived by his wife, actress Amy Brabso, and his two sons.
