On this morning’s episode of The View, the panel reflected on the upcoming 2024 presidential election, which is now less than a year away. Alyssa Farah Griffin had a particularly dire warning, claiming that her former boss Donald Trump is already predicting his White House victory.

Whoopi Goldberg kicked off the convo by playing a clip of former Congresswoman Liz Cheney, who told CBS News that we’re “sleepwalking into dictatorship in the United States.” While Goldberg was happy to hear Cheney speak up, she wondered, “Where was she several years ago?”

Griffin, who worked for Trump “several years ago,” defended Republicans like herself and Cheney. She told Goldberg, “it takes people some time to see it” and added, “seeing it firsthand was revelatory for many of us.”

Despite the ever-growing group of ex-Trump supporters — herself included — who are now speaking out against the “existential threat” of Trump, Griffin noted, “it’s not really changing the dynamics in the Republican party.”

“Nothing like this has existed in our history,” she said. “We’re still in a primary season. I hope that anyone other than Donald Trump can somehow pull of a miracle and get there. But the closer we get to Iowa, it does start to look a little bleaker. The only backstop to stopping Donald Trump is the general election.

“Where I take issue is, he is historically dangerous, and I hear a lot of Democrats saying, ‘Nikki Haley is just as dangerous.’ Nobody is,” she said somberly. “I am telling you, he already has a team lined up. He’s building out his White House transition right now. He’s taking resumes from people based on loyalty.”

When Goldberg continued to question, “Why did it take y’all this long?” Griffin — who resigned from the White House on Dec. 3, 2020 and later condemned the Jan. 6 attack — hit back by mentioning the insurrection.

“There’s only one man who tried to overthrow our democracy, and that happened on Jan. 6,” she said. “We need to look at that as much more dangerous than the policy issues.”

Goldberg, however, wasn’t swayed. She told Griffin, “Do you not realize that the danger is, the genie is already out of the bottle. The time to have looked at that danger was right after it happened, and they didn’t want to do it.”
